Hello all,
I am a very satisfied, proud owner of two American Indian dogs. My first, Yakone is a little over a year old and Freida was born last spring. For having the same father, Red Ryder, they couldn't look much less alike. Yakone has a long red and brown coat with some tan and Freida's short coat was more uniformly brown with white blaze and toes when she was really little but has recently turned sandy behind her ears and has a dark and lighter brown "braid",as I call it, down her back. Yakone's coat has never stopped changing so I can't wait to see what hers will do next! They have similar eyes. They are green and very sweet and alert.
I mention their physical appearance first as that is what draws folks in for myriad questions as we are out for our walks.
I've wanted a dog all of my life and as a kid I was allowed only cats, rodents, and fish. I love all animals but am no doubt a "dog person". I had been thinking I was finally ready to take on the responsibility and then one day when visiting a friend in Seattle we went to a doggie day care in Georgetown... there was this one dog that stood out from the rest of the pack. I remember that she was female, grey and brown...maybe had eyes of blue?? (owner, are you reading this?). She had an entirely different air about her than the others, a certain look in her eyes that went right to my solar plexus. I asked the very gracious daycare lady about her and she had Kim's information for me so I could look at his website and call him.
I wrote to Kim and he told me to talk to AI dog owners in my area so I could see what they are like. I talked to a few people and met one and her pup before I decided to pursue an interview with Kim. One or two owners had warned me away from getting an AID for my first dog. I wasn't deterred. I thought- I don't want a starter dog, I want THIS dog. I made the drive to Selma to meet more dogs, their owners and Kim and Arlene at the annual gathering in the summer of 2005. My boyfriend and I had our interview that day and we got on the list shortly thereafter. Kim called me exactly one week before my birthday to tell me I could pick up my pup in one week! I was so excited and will never forget that day. Yakone and I attended the gathering this last August and unexpectedly brought Freida, who was about 14 weeks old at the time home with us. He was upset at first but it didn't take long for them to work it out and now they clearly adore one another.
Yakone and Freida are two of the coolest things that ever could have happened to me. They are both such intelligent, tractable, sensitive, playful, funny and beautiful- from- the- inside- out beings. They are incredibly HIGH ENERGY which is great for me because I love to keep moving. My dogs bark and they can bark loud, fyi. They are intuitive, instinctual and wiley which keeps me on my toes. They are teaching me to stay in the moment and to enjoy life's simplicity more. ..To enjoy just being. Maybe most of all I am learning to be a stronger leader. An AI dog owner must be consistent and firm with their dog or else, as I was told more than once in the first few weeks, they'll have you wrapped around their little paw. Both dogs are great with people, kids and other dogs. Both were easily house-broken and like to keep the pack together. In other words, they don't try to escape from their yards or bolt.
The most wonderful things about these dogs words cannot describe. They are carefully bred to have few if any health or psychological issues. They are sweet and well-balanced dogs. I know they would be very protective and intimidating if they needed to be but it would take real danger to bring it out.
If you are interested in owning one of these dogs, know that Kim La Flamme is their only legitimate breeder. He possesses the proper reverence to breed them responsibly and conscientiously.
There's so much more to say but I will wrap it up...If you're not looking for a cookie cutter AKC type dog but rather a dog who will be a great companion with unusual and breath-taking beauty, perhaps the American Indian dog is the right breed for you!

Hi Marina and gang,
I love your letter. I forgot that you have another pup. I don't know if you remember us but my husband Darin and I were up at the Tigard Dog Daze this summer with Hawk. His dad too is Red. I know what you mean about this breed. They are such a joy to have around and to share the information about this breed with others. We live in a small town and almost weekly I still get people wanting to know more about him.

Marina, I appreciate what you said about them teaching you to be a stronger leader--so very true. That's the journey for all of us, taking our place in the pack.

I'm not sure she's still on the forum. I have met Freida, who's owner is actually Jerry. (I believe the author of this letter was his ex-girlfriend) You can find Jerry & Frieda in Sellwood nearly every weekday. I'm happy to tell you how/where if you like. I am also in Portland, and if you would like to meet my 2 Indian Dogs, I would be happy to arrange something. Mine have 2 very different personalities, so they represent an interesting spectrum. My older dog is a lot like Frieda, very shy, while my younger one is completely outgoing and bold.

My wife and I have interviewed several AIDog owners as well as having our interview with Kim, but we have yet to meet one of these dogs in person yet. We live near woodstock in SE Portland and would love the chance to meet with you and your dogs.

The problem with posting email addresses is that we get scanned all the time by webbots who are looking for contact data. It's pretty certain that if you expose an email address you'll be receiving more offers for "Rolex" watches and Viagra, which in my experience, are not interchangeable.
I'm easily distracted by squirrels.
