Hi everyone well we have two days before the big trip I had to take Malachi to the doc for stronger meds while we are away with all the climbing in the mts all I did not want him to be uncomfortable I want him to have a blast
anyway he had to be wieghed he up to 44.6 lbs thats as much as snake but he is bigger in hight about 1inch and his nose is longer his chest has started to develope also I have thier back pack all ready packed to go
I took them on a hike last saturday and had them wear thier BP did not phase them at all like it was part of thier skin Malachi never seems to stop amazing me so now everytime If I touch the BP they get all excited My only concern is that Malachi still get focused on something and I have a hard time snapping him out of it I v been working with him but I am afraid one of these days hewill get hurt any suggestions on how tsnape him out of it he knows his comands he just fixated on something and he hears nothing

Sorry, OT but what kind of climbing you planning on doing? :P

I had the same problem with our past dog. Never found a solution..he would just get so focused that he couldn't hear me. Eventually I'd give up and walk over to him, "DUDE! what are you doing?". He'd see me and snap out of it. Then get all excited that I was there with him..

You might try spending time alone with him. That way you can work on the focus between you two. It has definitely helped little Sitka. You might remember I asked the group about the time I had spent with Coyo versus the time with Sitka, and Karen let me know I was being a bit lazy. She was right. Just a little time alone with the new pup, has yielded great benefits.

I may have a few other suggestions, but I want to study up on that. Also, you realize that what you are describing is what the shock collar was invented for. Simply to break their attention, and refocus it on you, the owner. Not that I am recommending shock treatments, but the idea of it, is very interesting to me. You take this nebulous lack of attention, and whittle it down to a small moment.

But as you ask, how to do it? How to get his attention?

Have a great time at the park! Amazingly, I find these dogs really deliver when they have lots of open space.
One could argue that evolution suggests we’re not idiots, but I would say, “Well, no. Evolution just makes sure we’re not blithering idiots."

Surely I didn't use the word "lazy"? (And I had to include the quote "she was right", of course.)

Linda, why does Mal need pain meds?

By the time I've posted this, you will probably be on the road. If by some chance you see it, have a great time, I know how much you've been looking forward to it.

Oh, right! I forgot. I had that, too, and it hurts like a MF.

I've taught two dogs the word "Look!", and it's been very helpful. I used a treat, and put it between my eyes. They did not get the treat until they made eye contact, and had to maintain contact for longer and longer periods to get the treat. This worked with my sister's super hyper terrier, so I think it would work with any dog. Now I use the word with Danza and her head whips around to face me.

I've found that a sharp whistle will bring Yoki back to reality if she's "too far away" to hear my voice.
