We spent the 4th of July with an American theme at a school fete, the school is for 5 - 11 year olds. We had a small camp with Mike and I and the 2 dogs Shunka and Holly, we had special dispensasion from the head master to take the dogs on the grounds. the only other camper was JJ with his tipi, but other friends were there in costume.

The dogs were really tired at the end of the afternoon, being good is so hard!
Shunka won over some new fans, including one of the teachers who didn't want him to go home!

The kids were fascinated by the cannon, and were alllowed to shoot blanks from six-guns, it was totally politically incorrect, but they had a really good time, can't seem to find the pictures so will e-mail them to Allison and perhaps you will post them for me please? In the mean time will try to find out their file names!

Lots of pictures were taken of Shunka, and they are going onto the school website, will let you know what it is and when, when I know!

Hope you all had a really good day also.

This is JJ's tipi and some of our friends, the little fella in the top hat is Alan,he was born with no arms, but still takes part in everything we do, his wife is the lady in the 'flag dress.

This is Mike explaining about the cannon, it was fired to open the fete, but all the kids wanted it to be fired again, so we closed the fete too!
One could argue that evolution suggests we’re not idiots, but I would say, “Well, no. Evolution just makes sure we’re not blithering idiots."

Liz, I hope you don't mind I split this away from the other topic. I did not want it to get lost.

Boy, I bet that cannon is a bit loud. Very impressive, though. Shunka does not mind the noise?

Did the kids love it? I am jealous of your cooking set-up. I would love something like that for our camp, this summer. How does the coffee turn out, or is that tea?

The cannon is quite loud, it is a bit of a cheat, a 12 bore blank cartridge makes it go bang, niether of the dogs is a bothered by it, have no problem with fireworks either apart from the ones with a shrill whistle.

There are plans to build a 'real one' and get it properly proofed.

The coffee is great, we have a gallon enamel pot we use, and it is really good.(A Walmart special) We use a wood fire or occasionally charcoal to maintain a more even heat, Mike has made us an oven that fits on top of the fire, we use that on a longer camp. We use the above ground fire as a lot of places don't want us to dig fire pits.

Otherwise we use the dutch oven, it can cover most meals.

Yes the kids loved it, the queue to fire the six-guns was the longest one there, apparently the lads used nearly 200 blanks for the kids.

Some of them wanted to know if we always live and dress the way we were on that day!

Hi to Shunka and all the Big W crew.
Once again can I thank you all for making our summer fayre a great event. Having you all there made it a fayre to stand out from the crowd. I only worry about how to better it next year. Photos will be on the school website when I get the time.

thanks again

Mr. Ashcombe! Welcome. So glad you decided to add a few photos. We have all enjoyed seeing your time travels, over these years.

Great photos of our most senior forum dog, too. Thank you very much.

Yes we are lucky, when the crow scarers are going off just outside the village, Shunka and Holly have the place to themselves!

I sometimes wonder if the dogs pick up the fear that the dogs may have problems, from the owners, and that's what triggers it. So it's the owners fear for them that might be the problem. But then again some dogs are more sensitive to sounds, not that there is any thing wrong with Shunka's hearing although it can be selective at times!

Holly can hear a chew packet being opened from a mile I'm sure!

I must thank Bob for putting up the photos, I know he took loads of Shunka, who decided he wasn't and kept turning away at the right/wrong time!

Bob hasn't been involved with the re-enactment scene, but was very interested in it, I think we may be seeing him again at the Big W campouts, we will be having one in September on the outskirts of Weston.
