For those of you who make your own dog food I found this great site with awesome recipes for pet food. I think I printed out 15 pages of recipes. I have been making Hawk's food for a year now. His coat has never looked better. But I can tell he is getting some what tired of the same thing. So, I found this site. Today he is getting something new for dinner. Here it is: www.nocans.com

Thanks for the link, Lisa. That was quite interesting. I think those are really people food recipes, and they just added "Dog" to the title. I did appreciate their whole section on foods that you shouldn't feed a dog, including the garlic controversy.

I was glad to see this, because in my mushing books, they rely heavily on garlic, to keep the meat palatable for the dogs. Of course that was powdered garlic, and not fresh. Seems there is a difference, as any cook could tell you.


We usually just do meat and vegetables, as Coyo doesn't do well on rice or grains, but I bet he would love the added potato now and then. I do change his diet, and chicken and pork are always cooked, while the beef is more toward raw. We have a very small freezer, so I only keep meat portions ready, and then cook the veggies in the microwave.

My technique is much less work, than these recipes, but it is every night, as opposed to once a week, and they do look good. We have plans to get a freezer, when the remodeling is finished (and we have money, again :D ). I will try them, then, especially for those meats that I am cooking anyway.

I do like to feed him a little fresh and raw, though, and he seems to like it. The raw I feed him, however, is dropped into the just finished boiling water with the veggies(just enough to cook them, and create a gravy when the meat is dropped in), so the meat is really blanched, and surface bacteria is not a problem. His dog dish is microwaveable, so I just cook it right in his dish.

As I've mentioned before, Coyo is partial to the sweet vegetables, but he eats them all--last night he had broccoli.

Larry & I travel by motor home quite a bit and I have found a simple way to make and take Ma'ii's food. I take several chickens, debone and skin them, dump the meat into the food processor with wheat germ, egg, parsley, lots of veggies and dried blueberries. I put the mixture into loaf tins, cook at 350 for 1+ hours, cool then slice into feeding portions. After wrapping each slice in handi wrap, I wrap in foil and freeze. I take out what I need for the trip. I also do this with ground beef. If I forget to take it out of the freezer at noon I just put into the microwave and defrost until its thawed but still cold. He really like the mixtures and a few hours of prep do us for several weeks.

Lisa, you inspired me. Tonight, I added Coyo's chicken in with our chicken roast, and we're all drooling, waiting for the buzzer to ring. It is actually saving me work!
