Sitka Gets In Trouble Again

Recommended Posts

He is really pretty sweet, most of the time, but last night he did something he has never done before. He got on the counter and took the rest of my steak! It was gone. No evidence. However, it was clearly him.

I aired his little butt in the kitchen and asked him. Oh yeah, he confessed, and knew he had done something wrong. I told him "NO!" It is so easy to upset him, but come on, that is so against the rules!

So soon it was bed time, and I made him sleep on a pillow beside the bed. Oh, he was so upset. Eventually, he went around the other side to the softie, who let him up (we had a few words about spoiling him), and he curled very close to B, being careful not to touch me at all. He knew I was still not appeased.

Here's the interesting bit. After B went to sleep, as he does very quickly, Sitka hopped back down to the pillow on my side, and waited there; very sorry body language :(. After a respectable time, I called him up, and then he curled very close to me for the rest of the night.

Not sure if he thinks he got away with it, or not. Time will tell. But I did find it interesting the way he seemed to realize that he needed to square it with me. I thought about what Kim says, "Their tricky little minds", and there it was in action, and in all it's glory.

Oh- Allison- what a story. :)

I know the 'tricky minds' game too. JJ tries to tell me "But mom, it's so Hard." to try to get out of doing things I know he knows how to do.. ornery little cuss. :)

So yesterday, I took one of his favorite treats, and went around the kitchen counters placing it on the edge. I kept saying, "no", and "off". Then when I got to the counter where he had taken my steak, he came up, licked my hand, and waited quietly.

Great story Allison. Sounds like your observations and responses were perfectly timed. He knows he did a "naughty" thing. Sneaky little minds they have.

I can empathise with you for being upset (no steak!!) and with him for being so miserable. It's a good illustration of why it's best for the dog when he is well trained.

I caught our foster malamute with it's head in a pot of mac and cheese. The difference is the malamute was sorry she was caught and that was it. Sounds like sweet song dogs may make a bad decision but they have real regret.

She is implying that while Sitka is well trained, her husband isn't. I am led to understand this is a common problem.

(that being said, there is the sad truth that I - as I am the victim of Allison's implicit derision - will head to a pot of Mac and Cheese and show no remorse).

The only battle I have is with is with Shunka and the cat food! The trouble is, if it's on the top he doesn't try to get it, but if it's on the floor it's fair game! I can leave anything that's not on the floor and he won't touch it, whatever it is, his favourite chews, meat , but his food is put on the floor for him, so watch out cats, but they don't care! I catch him walking oh so nonchantly in to the kitchen, and I know what's on, I just tell him to 'Leave' and he looks at me as if I haven't a clue what he is doing!

Oh goodness! I had something similar happen a couple years back with my Rottweiler, who by the way was huge! When he passed away he was 152lbs, believe it or not.

Anyways, we hadn't even gotten the meat off the bbq when we heard a holler from the back yard. We go out to see he's gotten a large piece off the grill, but then immediately shoved his face into his water bowl because he had burnt himself when he stole our food! We figured it was enough of a reprimand that he got hurt.
