Any Other Dogs With Bortadella Vaccination Reactions?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Tayamni has been getting the oral Bortadella vaccine update the last 2 times (six months apart as recomended).

Both times this year she got a reaction and Coffey and her ended up with Kennel cough.

At the beginning of the year, we though they caught Kennel cough at the dog park because some other dogs had it (although one dog hadn't been to the dog park yet, new rescue, but his housemates were at park and never caught Kennel cough not close enough yet? existing dogs and new rescue?)

Anyway, no known Kennel cough going around now and Tayamni started coughing a week after getting the Bortadella update.

Vets thought it was a reaction and observation period began. Then almost a week later Coffey got the cough. They both sneezed too.

They didn't have lethargy, or loss of appetite but I did bring them in to have blood test and physical test.

Tayamni showed no sign on CBC of having any infection and Coffey's CBC showed he had an infection but it was not active, he had already gotten over it - no antibiotics needed.

Because this is the second time and Bortadella is a live vaccine, and it is possible for dogs to have reactions (coughing) which is NOT (supposed to be) contagious, and more rarely can develop Kennel Cough which is contagious Tayamni will be getting vaccinated once a year and the Vet will give her Benedryl before the Bortadella vaccination. They say it lessons reactions to vaccines.

I used to have to give one of my rescue cats (the permanent foster - lol) a pill before he got vaccines for the first 3 years and then he had no problems anymore so I know reactions can happen.

Tayamni and Coffey are on different vaccination schedules and we haven't noticed that he has any reaction to the Bortadella vaccine - his next vaccine update is in September .... we'll watch more carefully.

Since Tayamni had trouble with pain meds after spay, and now the Bortadella reaction I need to have the MDR test performed on her. Some dogs have a gene mutation that causes them not to tolerate certain meds and can be toxic. It is more common in herding type breeds.

Funny, or not, I have some gene mutations - they say that a lot of dogs take after their owners! she has sensitive intestines and drug sensitivities - really????? glad she doesn't have all my issues.

Anyway, I REALLY want to do right by her. My wincincala.

It sounds like an allergy to me. Might not be the active virus in the vaccine. Could be any of the ingredients that make up the pill or chewy they give for the vaccine. I can't say that any of my past dogs had a reaction to vaccines, mutts or otherwise, but I know it can happen.

One of my GSDs reacted badly but it's been so long I can't remember if it was the shot or the nose drops. We switched to the other delivery pathway and it was ok. Also rattle snake shot made Shiva cranky and off for a few days so we never completed the series. When the dogs were little we were careful to pace the immunizations so not too many shots at once. It's good to let them have at least a week after vaccinations to recover before things like boarding. It may be you need a buffer of quiet time while the immune system takes the hit and recovers. Hope that helps.

I had a post reporting on the spay issue and med reactions - can't find it.

Tayamni freaked out on Tramadol, as in hallucinations or something. It was a nightmare. Then find out that she got a staff infection in her cervix from spay, so that's why she was in pain for so long.

Got a new Vet (after a month and a half of spay vet not doing anything and finally after 6 -7 months she was healthy.

The new Vet took interest and has been great!

MDR mutation causes brain toxity by certain meds in dogs. It is NOT a hereditary (breeding) issue. It just happens sometimes.

I will test to make sure she doesn't have this mutation. Better to know than wonder since she has had previous issues with pain meds as well as this vaccine.

Yes, I'm not saying this is an American Indian Dog problem, just wondering if any other AI Dogs have had any issues.

Trying to figure it out and will report if she has the mutation so other people can be aware - although probably won't have an issue besides maybe the occasional allergic reaction. I added a reply above about the hallucination / freak out Tayamni had when she got Tramadol after spay.

I was soooooo scared and stayed next to her for hours until she calmed and just had pain.

Hi All!

GREAT NEWS!

Got the results of Tayamni's MDR1 mutation test: NEGATIVE! :)

It is an anomaly why she has had the reactions to pain meds and the Bortadella oral vaccine.

1. Pain med reaction & staff infection after spay = CHANGED VET PRACTICE.

2. The Bortadella vaccine is a LIVE vaccine so reactions and also contracting Kennel cough can happen to any dog.

I really think that switching to a new Vet was the best thing I ever did for her (medically).

Wish she didn't have to go through what she did.

AND the Vet we're with now - has come up with a plan to help keep reaction suppressed for next vaccine - give a Benadryl just before shot. ;)
