ArielRabbit 91
Hey there! We still have yet to get our pup but we thought it'd be fun and go a head and get some toys, a bed, and treats so that the puppy has something just for him to come home to (other than us of course). What do your American Indian dogs like? Do you have a favorite brand?
LakeGirl 779
Medium sized Kong squeaky play balls (the clear plastic ones.) They're tough, Kaposia hasn't been able to destroy one yet. We no longer let her play with tennis balls. Edited October 17, 2016 by LakeGirl
Sherab 2,337
Many pet stores cary natural antlers. Even if your pup only likes these during the teething time you will be glad you got them. I like the ones that are split. They are not as attractive but you can soak them in chicken broth for added interest. Ours liked the antlers during teething. Now they are just floor decorations.
miz molly 1,800
totally agree with you......just to add those floor decorations can become toe trippers.
Denise E. 1,485
I stayed grain and gluten free on treats. Small bite-size treats for puppy training, or shredded larger treats. I have ceremony antlers so instead my dogs got bully sticks, yak milk bones, and Himalayan wood (doesn't splinter) during teething. Toys: Tayamni still has stuffed toys from her arrival (WOW little stuffed animals almost 2 years old) BUT Coffey tears the stuffing out of almost every toy (even Tayamni's - she got depressed when one of them was torn apart). Tug toys are his favorites. Both LOVE squeakies as pups!!! They'd walk around the house squeaking away. It is less annoying than constant barking. Coffey also like the soft? plastic toys that he can close in his jaws - he likes to hear the air rush out and he gets a chew / jaw work out. They are pretty durable. Tayamni could play with tiny tennis balls, but Coffey tears them up so no tennis balls for us. Neither dog fetch so no big deal. Coffey likes to have his unstuffed toys and ropes thrown for "catch", it's 50/50 if he gets it before it hits the floor. He is happy to bring it back and will drop it on command. a Win-Win. I'm allergic to latex, so we stuff hollow bones instead of Kong's with mashed sweet potatoes, pumpkin (NOT pie mix), or something similar. Sometimes add applesauce to the mix and/or a little cinnamon. They love to work for treats! I found dehydrated coconut for special treating and that is a favorite as well as sliced dehydrated meat!
ArielRabbit 91
Wow thank you! I've had dogs my whole life and never heard of some of these things. Antlers have always stood tried and true, and we have plenty. Thank you all for your tips on everything! We plan on stocking up this weekend!
NorCal 350
Jolly ball with a rope ...good for tug and chase! Durable!
Chinatola 927
Kong makes a bunch of stuff that is good and durable. We've got a few things but truly there are only two 'pastimes' that we have in this house: Ball Tug of war Anything that is even slightly spherical in shape will garner interest from Lili. She may not engage but she's trained herself to investigate anything that even looks like a ball. I became worried for spaghetti & meatball night but since we don't typically serve the dish on the floor my fears were unfounded. Liliko'i bonded with the ball from the first or second day that she got here. It was both Ida & Elsy's favorite thing to do and naturally Lili loved her big sister Ida (Elsy was gone by this time) and wanted to do whatever she did. This included beating the OLP®(Old Lady Puppy) to the ball and keeping it from her...until OLP® became frustrated & quit the game. At that point Lili didn't know what to do so she'd just sit down and stare. It was funny. When Lunatic....sorry, Kekona arrived, she didn't have nearly the interest in the ball as Lili did. She was more into wrestling, cuddling & tug of war than chasing a ball that someone threw in some random direction for some unknown reason. At least that's how I interpreted how she'd look at me when I'd try to engage her with the ball. She'd watch me throw it, follow its flight path, note where it landed and then look back at me as if to say, "Yeah? Now what?". We got her a medium to large size Kong rubber tugger thingusmawhatchit. Looks sort of like a mutant number 8. Red, somewhat heavy. If you're not careful you might even get it whumped upside your head if you're not paying attention. It's got some heft. We thought that she'd just obsess on this thing. Not so much. She'll play with it now & then but she's not really that into it. We tried the stuffed animal thing but they both become fixated on destruction & the stuffed whatever it is is not long for this world. As time went on we realized that Kona thought that perhaps other things in the house qualified as stuffed 'toys'. Eventually we got tired of: - Spending money on things that last at most 36 hours - Cleaning up the mutilated corpse of an iridescent green baby dragon or shocking yellow, orange & black googly-eyed snake. (not to mention re-stitching the couch back together a few times) Eventually we settled into a routine where the most important thing in the world to Kona are plastic water bottles. Empty, full or found in a dumpster at the bottom of a pile of junk it doesn't matter to her. If she finds one it's on. We think it's the crackling noises and the ability to thoroughly destroy the bottle, shredding it and leaving tiny little pieces strewn about the house as if we were infested with rats. About two months ago, she lost interest in the bottles but she'll still play with one now and then. She's back to bones & antlers...
ArielRabbit 91
Thank you so much for all that information! Getting the couch torn into can't be fun. We'll hopefully be able to avoid that one with all this great advice! But I suppose that also depends on the personality of the pup

We'll hopefully be able to avoid that one with all this great advice! But I suppose that also depends on the personality of the pup I agree. Tayamni won't tear a stuffed toy apart BUT made all her stuffed beds "sleep number" beds as she kept taking stuffing out until happy. After about, let's see, 1, 2, 3, ... mmmm 4, I learned my lesson took her to the store, laid out a bunch of different kinds (this was after she was a year old) and she wouldn't give any the time of day until .... little Cinderella went over to the temperpedic like foam mattress with a headrest and daintily stepped onto it and curled up with her head on the headrest. I was so glad it was on sale AND I had a coupon that was OK to use on sale items! So I got a $90 bed for about $50 and (well, do that math: each bed before that cost between $25 and $35 each). BTW - China, Tayamni does the same thing with tennis balls. Same thoughts too. Coffey, well, he tears the stuffing out of his toys, pulls the toys apart, shreds tug toys, tennis balls (at home-they are banned now, and he leaves the balls at the dog park alone), AND chewed my leather couch apart A FEW TIMES and took some stuffing out of it. He also, chewed on a couple pairs of shoes (something Tayamni never did once we told her 'No'!). I have had to replace some bed sheets because of Tayamni. She buried a bullystick under the top sheet and instead of taking it out later to eat, she decided to chew the stick through the sheet. She now has a taste for pieces of fabric that she can drool on then twist up and start chewing. Ahhhh, it has gotten better. I think these paragraphs are all about agreeing: we learn something new with each pup!! LOL!!!
ArielRabbit 91
I'm hoping with our furniture doesn't get to torn into. We plan on our dog going with us every where we go, leaving limited alone time with things that can get destroyed. The pup will sleep with us in our room on his own bed that I was planning on making (with no stuffing now, thanks for all the heads up). Our last dog (not an AI dog but still just one of the best dogs I've ever had) hated the squeaky part of toys. He only would tear into stuffed animals to get the squeaky out then bring it to me for me to fix it. It was kinda funny but after resewing a couple stuffed animals we stopped getting them with squeakers. He just wanted something nice, soft, and quiet to cuddle with.
