I live in the Eugene OR area and I am looking for suggestions for a good vet for our AI Dog. We are on the waiting list for our first pup, and read an old topic about how finding a vet that would work well for these dogs is important. So could some dog owners in the Eugene/Springfield area make some suggestions? We currently take our cats to WAGS Spay & Neuter clinic.

The only advice that I could give, if you're willing that is, is to be mindful of the language that the Vet chooses to use. There are those that we've come across that are dismissive of the fact that this is not a 'recognized' breed and even go so far as to state that if the dog, 'isn't listed in the AKC then it's not a real breed'. There are others who have had similar experiences too. Run. Fast & far.

There's no way a person with closed mind like that would be even willing to entertain the idea of this being a breed unto itself and as such possesing some unique characteristics & needs. We had to change vets 3 times when Lilikoi came home in 2012. Our longtime veterinary clinic that we'd spent quite some time with over the 15 years that we had our prior animals was borderline abusive when we introduced Lili to them. I told them the abbreviated story of Kim & the dogs & still they continued dismiss this as fiction. I was so beyond dissapointed. She had a bad case of Giardia when she arrived and they chose to put her on Panacur, which is a harsh chemical designed for deworming, to address the Giardia. Bad move. Lili had a very bad reaction to the Panacur and they even made an attempt at a second course of Panacur when the test results showed that she still had Giardia. That was it...I was done. Went to another Vet locally that was only marginally better & stayed with them for one or two visits. Then we settled on a holistic vet who was very supportive of the breed story & even engaged us to learn more so that they can better interact with the dogs. Yay! We found our guys. They've been very good & we love this clinic. So do the dogs.

Just do some research & ask lots & lots of questions. Go with your gut feeling & think twice if the 'attitude' sneaks into your interview process. You'll be fine.
