Suddenly Peeing On People's Legs?

Recommended Posts

Soooo, on Saturday, our group of friends were caught off guard by the beach's security guard (who typically stops working after Labor Day). His name is Bob, and Bob is awesome. He never gives tickets (though he has authority to do so), and he gave us fair warning that his shift starts at 7, so for us to just be off before 7. .. and he patrols the beach from Memorial day through Labor Day... Awesome guy. ... But I guess he is working longer months now... Not sure why.

Anyway, like I said, we were caught off guard by Bob on Saturday morning... Our dogs were playing as normal when we saw Bob coming. He didn't need to say anything. He just stood in the sand, arms folded across his waist, and we all made our way off the beach. But nooooo.... NAKOMA decides to PEE ON BOB'S LEG!!!! <_>

Ok... fast forward to this morning.... we were finishing up our run, and Nakoma ran to one of the dog dads there, and Nakoma peed on HIS leg!!!! :(

Why is he doing this, all of a sudden?! The guy wasn't anybody new to the group... and other people were there, too. Really strange.

There was only one other time, when he wasn't even a year old yet, that he peed on MY leg when I was flirting with a guy I had just that minute (i attributed that to him letting the guy know that I belonged to Nakoma). (never saw the guy again).

OK I couldn't 't stop laughing. 3 X isn't quite a habit but it is the start of a trend. What is your response? Is it corrective and "in the moment" (laughing doesn't count). Perhaps for a little while you need to recall Nakoma and give permission to go off and visit other people. What was the other dog dad doing, where was the run (on the same beach?) Context might help. Sounds like Nakoma and Bob were in a "pissing match" - Bob's body language vs actual pee. Not sure about the other dog dad. Try being more directive and proactive with Nakoma for a while (keep him paying attention to you - in a heel or a sit or a place or a stay) so he doesn't over inflate his job.

I still laugh at it, Sherab! ... I'm not really counting the first time from when he was a puppy. But the last two times, that were only within five days of each other, has me a bit concerned.

I made a quick comic illustration of it. (Below) I shouted a loud and firm "NO" as he was doing it, and then came running back to me afterwards. Him going up to Bob on Saturday was completely unexpected. We were all in a cluster and walking off together, which is routine. So it was strange for him to just go right up to Bob and do what he did.

Also, it is normal that when we are running (we all use the same entrance/exit ramp) that when I am able to see my friends ahead of me, I allow Nakoma to go ahead and sprint to them and play with the dogs. (The dog parents get a kick out of watching him run because he's super fast, and he plays well with all the dogs, and he really helps tire them out by making them chase him). This is nothing new. None of the other people are runners... they either usually stay up by the ramp and talk amongst themselves, drinking coffee, while the dogs play, or they stand by the water. Sometimes they walk along the beach (and when they do, they're heading the direction that I'm coming from... we can't go the other way because that is a different town and tickets are issued there). So on Thursday, they doggy parents were by the ramp, and I let Nakoma run to them, and he peed on Larry.... who Nakoma usually lets pet him).

... When we went to Church yesterday for the blessing of the animals, I was really hoping that he didn't raise his leg on the priest! Could you imagine????

Looks like the common factors are beloved beach and a guy. He may have been asserting that it's his beach and no alpha can come along and take his territory from his pack. I'd just limit his freedom for a few weeks. Don't send him out ahead and keep him a bit more directed or even leashed if you do that typically - don't let him off. Guessing that would be enough to nip what ever pattern is trying to set up in his brain. Reboot the beach & avoid Bob / Bob times.
