Tick Season

Recommended Posts

Found the first tick of the season. I went up to get dressed this morning, and there it was languishing on my pillow. MY PILLOW!

Gave me the hebe hebees, I don't mind telling you. Washed everything (me included), and will do it again in a couple days, and a couple after that.

Time for the one spot stuff. Hate to use it, but geez, I really hate ticks.

My husband was getting his hair cut last week and the Barbour found one behind his ear crawling---had not dug in yet. They all laughed and the Barbour stated it was the first time in his career he ever found a live tick on someone. My husband just came back from walking Mehi and Jayday. So yep, they are out in the Chicago land area.

Just looked up ambertick...it's a totally natural flea and tick collar, made of amber stones! I'm definitely in for this...We are into natural health, and keeping chemicals away from pets and kids. I make my own rose geranium herbal flea and tick repellent, which I will sell at my local farmer's market. You just spray behind the neck and rub it into the fur around the neck and shoulders, and then spray and rub a bit by the hind legs. I used it on my black lab years ago, and it seemed to do well.

I will be interested to hear how the amber collar will work for you. I read some reviews on Amazon, and just from that, I would say it was a good idea to start using the collar right before everything starts to bloom.

We use Nexgard chewables for fleas and ticks. Year round. My glorious hunter seemed oblivious to the chipmunk that came in through rodent crafty magic and lived in the house for a week before we could get the tricky little devil and throw the bum out. Little bugger brought fleas in with him. Then there's "einstein" the mouse that lives? in my studio at the barn. We think he got eaten by the bobcat sometime in February, all our human efforts having failed. Such is life in the woods.

We use Nexgard too. Our vet is familiar with our semi-remote location and says we have both and need protection year round. Ayita's coat is so thick I didn't think the topical could be effective. Tried a collar and it was just too many collars. Lucky for me she isn't really interested in eating little beasties, although she loves to chase them and give them a piece of her mind :D

I've started using a product by Sergeant's called Sentry Natural Defense. Literally, just started, yesterday. It's a natural product to kill fleas & ticks & deter mosquito's & other insects. We'd used Top Spot for a while but ran out recently and thought that we should try to find a product that was more natural given our spirit dog journey.

The natural pet food store (or whatever they're called) suggested it because it's ... wait for it ... Natural! At least they're consistent.

Contains: Peppermint, Cinnamon, Lemongrass, Clove & Thyme oils plus Isopropyl Myristate which is used in a wide range of products including cosmetics & topical medicine's. The Isopropyl Myristate's big claim to fame is that it's used to treat head lice by dissolving the wax that covers the exoskeleton of the lice which cause them to dehydrate & die. It's used in this case to aid absorption into the skin.

It has a very strong clove aroma when first applied but that trails off shortly thereafter and so far the dogs don't seem to mind but Kona did display some unusual behavior after application by trying to rub it off on the walls.

At one point, as she is wont to do, she climbed up on Julies desk and decided it was important that she survey her office from a higher vantage point than what she would normally see & 'help' Julie with her daily task list. This of course got a laugh from Julie. And a photo...

konadesk.jpg

After she took the picture she called me into her office to see what she was doing which caused Kona to panic somewhat & then it happened.

***Crash***Bang***Pow***Crack***Boom***Crunch***Tinkle Tinkle*********

In her haste to not be caught in a compromising position she manged to knock absolutely everything off of Julie's desk....Computer monitor, file folders, glass of juice, telephone...everything ....down to the most obscure paperclip! It was rather funny....almost!

Took about an hour to clean everything up during which time she made herself quite scarce.....

The Flea & Tick stuff didn't seem to distress her, she's just not used to having this type of product applied very often (Winter here is mostly house bound so we don't normally use these types of products and she's only had a few instances of application of these types of products since she's been with us so I'm thinking it's more, "What's this crap!" than "Oooow, what's this crap?"). She does this 'rub the wall' thing anyway as part of her "I'm antsy & need to go outside or beat up my sister or chew on a couch or maybe just whine about something only I know about for the heck of it" moods.

We'll see how it goes...but so far it makes the office & house smell nice...which is a bonus...If you like cloves that is....

Sounds like a wonderful product, Chinatola! The only problem with it for us is that I am allegic to all of the ingredients in that list except peppermint 😕. The amber necklace collars just arrived in the mail from Lithuania! Hope they work...they seem to be well made, I just hope her collar tags don't smash the amber to pieces when she shakes. Amber cracks easily. Maybe we need to order a collar with an information plate riveted to it instead of her current one with the dangling tags.

Chinatola, your stories never cease to crack me up!

Lakegirl, the collar is gorgeous! I'd buy two... one for my dog and one for me to wear as a necklace! I hope it works. Does it smell like pine??? Please let us know how it goes!

Nakoma's vet prescribes the Nexgard also... and on the days we go into wooded areas (we live on the beach, so we don't have the woods nearby), I just go ahead and spray him down with the AVON Bug Guard that I use on myself and on my daughter. It's free from that DEET stuff. Nobody told me to use it, but if it's just once in a while, followed by a bath (since we all get filthy while having fun), I don't see it hurting him. And besides, it keeps mosquitoes away, too. I know the Nexgard is supposed to take care of the fleas and ticks, but I use the spray as an added measure of protection... just in case. I'm seriously thinking of that Amber necklace though, if you give it a good review. :-D

Those are super cute. Might need one regardless of the efficacy.

Me too! Of course they would be ripped off quickly, but maybe they would look good for a few minutes. lol

  • 4 months later...

We've used the amber collars on Kaposia since May. In June (height of tick season) we were out in the woods of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We had ticks on our clothing, in the van, and in the motor home (one crawling over my forhead just as I was falling asleep) and this after checking with and sans clothing. No ticks on the dog. About three weeks later she did pick up a tick that dug in behind her left jaw. Probably picked it up in the tall weeds by the creek in our local park, but I have to add that this was just about the time I should have either washed the collar in dish detergent to remove her oils, or replaced the collar. We removed the tick before it was fully engorged, and four weeks later had a blood test for tick bourne diseases...all came back negative. So, for what it's worth, we'll keep using the amber collars.

Update...amber collar is NOT effective against fleas. :( We've had a long stretch of hot, rainy, humid weather and Ms. Kaposia became infested in spite of a brand new fresh amber collar. ...seemed to work well against ticks...fleas...not so much. We just did the 5 minute Dawn dish soap bath followed up by a light neck to tail dusting of cinnamon. Hope it works. Now on to vaccum, vaccum, vaccum, run the bedding through the 2 hour sanitary cycle, vaccum......
