Fenris At 3 Months

Recommended Posts

Fenris is doing pretty well. He is clearly quite smart, and also very inquisitive. He has already learned sit, down, paw (shake), and has gotten the concept of the potty bell. We started him off with puppy pads, which he seemed to take to pretty naturally, then we started moving them towards the door, started working the potty bell, and then voila, just as we bought a new set of potty pads, he started using the bell :). This weekend we made some agility training equipment, and he's already taking to that, no problem.

We were a bit worried at first that he might not like being a house dog, since he spent the first bits of his life in an outdoor kennel. Boy did we get that wrong. He is more than happy to cuddle up on the couch, sleep in the bed, etc. We are still working on manners with his elder sister (my 12 y/o mini dachshund toy poodle mix), and the cat doesn't care for him much yet, but things are coming along. We were excited to see pictures of his REAL sister, and hope that we might get to meet her sometime :).

How much is he weighing in at?

As of yesterday he weighed in at 17 lbs. He has been doing very well and we also adopted a kitten this past week so we have been busy trying to get them socialized together. The kitten is at least not afraid of him currently. if Fenris was a little more gentile I think it would go better but he gets so excited to see the kitten that he gets a little carried away with his own paws J

Will try to get some pictures of them up when they actually can sit still for them J

Other than that he has been doing well. He got his final round of shots. Hopefully Puppy classes will be starting soon for him (waiting for the trainer to post the schedule for the next classes). In the mean time we have been working with him with Sit, Stay, Down, Shake, Beg, and starting to do roll over.

We are also trying to find some camp grounds that are not quite full to get into and take him camping.

https://youtu.be/zSxm3XHIk-c - Video of him playing with his kitten (Tiberius). I couldn't figure out how to embed the video.

Bet your other cat is happy - AND these two are REALLY hitting it off!!!!!!!!!

Debris is so gentle playing with Tiberius. Such a good boy. The pic of him sleeping belly up looks so much like Arya when she lays like that. We are still working on manners. Especially jumping on the grandbabies.

So quick update.

Fenris is now 5 and 1/2 months up to 32.3 lbs. We went to the vets today because before we go in for his neutering in November the vet recalled hearing a slight heart murmur back in July when we had our initial vet appointment. Back then he said that he would likely out grow it. Well today he still heard a slight murmur so we are having a heart specialist come look at him to ensure that anesthetics will not adversely affect him during the neutering surgery.

My question to all of you is have you encountered this before with any ai dogs? Jon and Gail does his sister Arya have any issue like this that your vet noticed? I am hoping it is not genetic and that this is a non issue for us or anyone else.

Oh my. I am so sorry. I hope that it is nothing after the heart specialist look at him.

Arya' s last visit was on the 1st, at 5 months. No heart murmur mentioned and she did listen to her heart and lungs. We went in for a cough. We thought she swallowed one of the grandbabies little wooden puzzle pieces since she coughed and gagged all night. She had x-rays and was cleared of having an airway blockage, thank goodness. She never coughed at the vet till we were ready to go home. They put her on antibiotics for kennel cough to be safe. She had her bordetella, so I didn't think she could get it. She picked it up from either the home depot or the football game we went too. But she is fine now. It lasted about a week, but she went stir crazy in the meantime as we skipped out walks till she was better.

Both vets that she has seen both said that she is healthy. They also said that she would be a difficult dog. She is going through a defiant stage, but is getting better the older she gets.

Please keep us updated with Fenris's check-ups and any tests. If it is a heart murmur, I hope he can still out grow it. That makes us sad to hear about this.

Tayamni (Azteca x Jay Fall 2014) has always had a good heartbeat. Her littermate Boone had a murmur as a puppy and grew out of it.

Tayamni does have some seasonal allergy - takes after me I guess! She also has reactions to the Bortadella vaccine and some pain meds. She does NOT have an MDR mutation and it Doesn't seem to be a problem with any of her littermates and younger siblings (the ones I know), just her.

Coffey (Nozie x Tonto Summer 2015) had a good heartbeat and then a slight murmur/rhythmic murmur just before 1 year old (May 2016) and was gone at next checkups in August & Sept 2016. So he is cleared by Vet.

The May visit was for his travel health cert and it was a few weeks after he was at the vet for his neuter. He was probably just nervous that he might be violated again. Silly boy!

Bortadella vaccine doesn't make total immunity as there are many strains of the virus and it can turn into respiratory bacteria (or maybe there are bacterial forms? I can't remember off hand).

The vaccine certainly helps reduce the severity.

Bortadella is a live vaccine. A small amount of dogs (in general) get a reaction from it and even a smaller amount actually get Kennel cough from it. Not an AI Dog issue, could be any dog that gets the vaccine.

My Vet has decided to reduce Tayamni's vaccination to once a year for now (instead of 6 months) and will give Benadryl injection just before Tayamni gets the Bortadella (oral) update.

Coffey has no problem with the vaccine and staying on the every 6 months schedule as we visit the dog park regularly and travel with the dogs.

I really hope that Fenris grows out of it. Please let us know what the specialist says about him and how he progresses. ;)

While arrhythmia is not uncommon in pups of all breeds, IT IS UNCOMMON FOR IT TO PERSIST IN OUR PUPS.

Please let us know how your appointment goes, and let Kim know.

I don't remember any mature dog that had heart trouble of this kind, so I hope that will help to calm you while you wait. I have only been working with the dogs for the last (Oh my dog!) 15 years.

Again, talk to Kim either now, or when you get your results or both. He knows these dogs better than anyone and may be able to help and put your mind at ease.

Kodi,

My vet told us he heard a slight murmur in bandit, but also said that he is very healthy (and athletic) and doesn't exhibit it when running/being athletic. He said it was something to be aware of for anesthesia or in an emergency situation, but not anything to worry about on a day-to-day basis. I hope you receive similarly good news.

Kodi type heart murmur into the forum search and you will see that this is a question that comes up from time to time. I've been reading stuff on the Forum (6 years) they have grown out of it. I'm sure that's a scare but i hope it helps to hear that this topic has come up and I haven't heard of anyone not growing out of it. People are very open about ailments here. Good luck and let us know how the surgery goes. I think you are taking the prudent actions.

Thanks folks that makes me feel better. The vet mentioned that they are on a scale of 1-6 and that this is a 1 the lowest level. The vet suspects tht he would grow out of it, but he also did not want to anestestize Fenris with out knowing for sure if it was more serious or not. We have a Echo setup for the 27th when the roamin heart specialist comes in. (the one our Vet Recomended so we are going with that suggestion, little more money for the roaming one but he was the higher rated heart specialist).

I will let people know more once we have the results on the 27th.

Ok Good news from the Eco today. All heart related issues are functioning normally it is just an Audiable murmur. The Doc gave us essentually a clear bill of health. The doc says we should keep an eye on it for a bit and in 5 months or so he wants to have him back in to listen and see if it is still audible. The Doc he gave us clearance for the neutering surgery so Anesthetics should not cause any issue for him.

Since we were there we Weighed him again and Fen put on another couple of pounds or so. he is now weighing in a 34.4 Lbs.

Glad to hear the good news! Better to have it checked and not have to worry now.

I had a laugh when I read his weight. Coffey just went to the Vet and weighed 34.6 lbs - he is 16 months old now though!

I bet Fenris looks bigger than Coffey even at the same weight.
