Kim's Luka Has A New Home And Name

Recommended Posts

Greetings all:

My name is Cyndi. Luka has come to join our family. We have modified his name slightly to Luko~ta. New home, new name....a whole new lifestyle for this amazing little dog. He is now living the pampered life of an indoor dog and adjusting very well. We have taken him on walks into the pet stores and people can't believe that he has never been on leash before. He is so very well mannered. He is such a gentleman too; always let's me go first. :D

My small space heater still scares him when it turns on....then when it turns off he always investigates it; so many new unusual things! He is totally loving being the only dog at the food dish!

We are planning to take an extended trip in a few months so Luko~ta will have even more exciting adventures. We will keep everyone posted on how he is doing. He might even get his own blog when we go on our trip; he has much to share. ;)

His first day here he got to spend almost an hour at the Doggy U-Wash place; nice long hot bath, massaging brush down, nails clipped, cologne sprayed....and a new camo neckerchief! I tell you he is one "hot" dog! (sorry to all the doggy ladies out there he is no longer dating....he is taken)

Tomorrow if weather isn't too bad he will get to go to the park. We will get some pictures. He also gets to try out his new doggy backpack.

Someone else needs the computer so I will sign out for now. It's great to be here and I will be back often. I am looking forward to meeting more of you here and learning more about this fantastic breed. I will post some pictures in the next few days.

It sounds like you are going to be having a great time! We have one of his pups, so I can't wait to see photos. She is afraid of noises, too. I've had to train her to not run away when I'm unloading the dishwasher, or doing almost anything in the kitchen! She even runs outside if I get out the broom. :D She is a character.

Congrats on Luka! Love the twist on the name! It's cute! As everyone else excited to see pictures! You will love having him i'm sure as we all have an amazing breed. I too was close to taking one of Kim's retired dogs but he had another family in mind. Who luckly for them, they lived closer to Kim and had already grown a bond with the dog. :( You are very lucky! Good lick! Any advice feel free to ask, everyone here always has great advice!

Let's see some pictures! Is he no longer being used for breeding anymore? Does Kim usually adopt out the ex-breeders? I love the name change! Cute!

Emmie ~

I do some times adopt out dogs that I'm not breeding from any longer, with the understanding that they come back to me if they don't work out for any reason & of coarse spayed or nuetered. Also if I find the perfect home for them 'ussually' close by so I can see them again & maybe help with any problems they may have.

Unless I've gotten so attached that I can't stand to see them go, like Dusty, Sierra & Ghost at this time. (couldn't imagine them any where but here) They just hang out here on the ranch chasing geese from the pastures, keeping coyotes off of their territory (howling back & forth all night!) either sleeping under the back porch, in the barn or in the house ... Ghost is the main house dog right now, that sleeps by my bed side (not in it <g>). Goes with me with younger pups .... she helps me train. Sierra is my scooter sled dog, that can pull 2 people with ease. She is the one hanging in the back ground when strangers come by. But after checking them out ... by the time they are leaving she will allow a pet or two & see them down the drive way. Dusty is still the Alpha top dog pack leader that EVERYONE respects or her right hand inforcers will set straight in a hurry, that's Catch & Echo = 2nd's in comand next in line for Alpha.

I actually thought Luka would be staying here too, as he is a spicial case with not much socializing with people (plenty with other dogs) & very little leash training, but such a sweet humble little gentle man. At least he would never leave my side when I let him out with run of the ranch. When Cyndi came to meet the dogs & probobly planning to put her name on the waiting list, she asked if I had any older dogs that I would give up to a good home. I thought of Luka & it just clicked & off they went happy dog, happy people.

They wanted to change the name to Dakota .... with so many Dakota's in the registry I asked if Luko-ta would work for them ... it works & even if we have to leave his actual registered name as Luka, they can call him Luko-ta & he will come to it. It's really satisfying to find that perfect match, espicially with the harder to match older dogs. I just placed 2 other older dogs; Snake & Abby the first of this year also .... to great homes too.

Yes, Kaily was going to get Coca, but Judtith in Tigard clicked so well with her that I couldn't imagine Coca going any where else ... & Judith is close <g> sorry Kaily. But Coca is doing great & might even start doing agility with Julie padbury in Tigard close to where Judith lives. Hope some more of you S. Wa., or Northern OR. owners will join them?

Now I have a little more room for the 6 little 9 month old brats that I've kept for the next generation of breeders; Fem.'s, Fancy Dancer, Blue Bird, Black Ice, Peyote Dreamer & male; (Rock & Roll) Rocky .... WOW, try training 6 little brats at the same time & all at that horrible 9 month old teen ager stage ... crazy .... but fun & very challanging. It's raining today or I'ld be out there with my whip & chair <g>

Thanks for all the great info, Kim. It sounds like the perfect fit is exactly what you wait for- the dogs pick their new owners.

So when is the next Clan gathering? I want to see this next generation! :(

Hi Emmie ~

Well I don't know about that ... with the older dogs I can tell by what the new owners are looking for if a certian dog fits into their life style or not. Then I put the 2 together & observe to see how it goes. But I make all the decisions when it comes to who fits with who, spicially with pups, 6 to 8 week old pups are not quit responcable enough to make those kind of dicisions, that's were 50 years of knowing the bloodlines & observation from the time they are born comes in.

Actually if I left it up to most new owners to pick pups or older dogs out themselves, they would always end up with the most out going pup in the litter (or older dog) ... & the pretty-est colors "to them" ... that runs up to them first & "to them"; loves them most & wants to go home with them <g> ... this is not neccesarely the right pup (or older dog) that should be with them. Just the most out going one that dosn't think & observe before it jumps out there.

It works out so much better when I can either advise people & give a couple of choices or just send them the pup that I beleive fits them. There were 2 other people that wanted Luka when they were here for older dogs ... I didn't even conceder them for Lika, as another older dog was a better fit. It's always nice when that "perfect" fit comes along ... but I don't allow the people or pups to choose (except to a certian extent any way) the Alpha pack leader knows best <g> & that's me ~

Which is exactly what everyone who has had Kim choose their pup for them has told me! Nice to know the "Alpha" knows that he knows best! Bwahahaha

Many people have told me that I am crazy to let a "complete stranger" choose our pup for us...and I have shrugged my shoulders and told them after several months of emails, a few phone conversations, and the community here - I by far do not believe ANYONE from the Song Dog Kennels are strangers AND who better to know the dogs than the one who has worked with them for many, many years! :)

The only "complaint" that I have is that I am too far away to take a quick drive over to see the ranch! :( Oh and I am still counting down the days - the hubby-in-hiding claims if I knew what time the dogs hooked I could give you an exact countdown to the day of birth! Bwahahaha

Thank you again, Kim for bringing us all together into a community that continues to thrive for the sake of our dogs and dogs-to-be!

Emmie,

A little off subject here - but I think this one is one of my favorite pics that you have posted! The look in Ronin's (that is the right name?) eyes are okay - I'm watching you little one! He always looks SO patient with the pup!

Exactly!! I've always challenged the idea that "He chose me" go into a shelter, and the dogs that run into the fence trying to get your attention, are going to be the most highest energy dogs in the place. If you're looking for a pup to sit on the couch with you, steer clear :( If you're looking for a frisbee, or agility dog, then take them for a walk, but don't grab the first pup that's tail can't stop wagging, and tongue can't stop licking through the gate :) Unless that's the energy you're after.

I'm very excited to see what kind of behavior the pup Kim chooses for us has. With all the many different stories on the board it's almost like playing a game of roulette, ha!

Exactly why we all have faith in your choice kim. Even for those of us who are waiting for undetermined period of time making sure the home we will one day bring an AID to is just right and the timing is right.

Besides how could someone possibly argue against 50 yrs of sage like wisdom. :(

When we do temperament testing on the Dobermans we do it at exactly 7 weeks. It's very easy to see who the puppies are and what they will become- who will be better for agility and/or obedience, who would be an easy going pet, and who is going to need a more stern owner. It's a lot of fun to see, and when it's all over and we compare notes, usually we (the testers) are spot on in determining the personalities that the breeder has watched develop over the last 7 weeks. Plus, it enables me to get my puppy fix every 6 months or so! :)

I think it's always best to leave puppy choosing to the professional (Kim) so that way you aren't blinded by all the super cute puppies! Kim can see them for who they are, and then be able to decide who can handle what puppy, based on their own lifestyle and situation, and thus create a perfect fit. Anyone who can't make the trip to the farm to see for themselves should have no trouble trusting Kim, and all the people around you who don't understand it obviously they don't know how things work when you get a puppy from a good, respectable breeder! It's those BYB newspaper litters where you go and pick for yourself....

And, yes Debi Ronin is a very good uncle (patient and gentle) and will babysit Dobies (or Frenchies, or whatever) all day long!

Coyo loves to show the pups around, and helps then to know where and when to pee. It's really been helpful for those pups that came through here.

Awwwwww...So Emmie, those aren't Frenchies in the pic, are they? They look like little mastiff pups! I am so loving the brindle coloring! My husband has put his desire to get a bulldog aside until we get Sol here and acclimated, but I would love to get a little female for Sol to play with...hmmm...here I am all ready planning our next one and Sol's not even here yet! Bwahahaha

It's cool to see the difference even in their fur!

First pic is a Frenchie and Dobie, and then the second pic is Ronin with a litter of Bullmastiffs. I showed them for a few years and still own two, but they're both red not brindle. I love the brindle color, but it's a lot easier to show a red or fawn!

I live in Newberg so maybe we can get them together at a park or something. I'm sure he would love to meet one of this daughters. I'll be sure to bring my camera!
