I have to brag about Nita and giving her med for a itchy above her eye! At first I had to chase her down and corner her.I was using Bactine and neosporin. She likes it. Now I can show her the Bactine and she will come and sit still while it,is applied.

I put an e coller on her and it has calmed her down.

That's great! Glad you found something that works :)

I had issues giving Tayamni meds at first. She initially responded well THEN as a growing pup did not like to be held for toe clipping or anything. Luckily she LOVES treats!!!!!!!! Food goes in and she stands still. I think it's more about getting her out of her head.

Also, when I have to give her pills, I use a pill dispenser and it works better than my fingers. I have short nails but it seems they may scratch her throat anyway = or maybe I just don't get the pill in the right spot because she can work it back out sometimes - but not with the plastic pill dispenser! Of course she gets a treat afterward and she LOVES that!

I know what you mean about the chase and corner - LOL- I wonder if a lot of growing pups go though this phase initially?

Interesting. I like this idea.

I don't know what this is. I usually hide it in a piece of meat.

..... I don't know what this is. I usually hide it in a piece of meat. .....

Well, it's also called a pill gun but I was trying to be PC for once - LOL!

Coffey would eat the pill in the meat, but Tayamni has separated the pill from meat and spit pill back on floor - so I had to stick the pill down her throat.

Then, she learned to wiggle her head and manipulate with her tongue and spit it back out. I remembered the small pill dispenser (for my cats - who won't eat a treat if they smell a pill in it) and found a winning recipe with the pill gun/pill popper. Then a really good treat!

Here's the two sizes I have, depending on the size of the pill.

Thanks. I may need to use that. These dogs are all different, and a bit quirky.

The meat/ pill problem I solved by giving Sitka one small piece of meat, no pill. Next was meat with pill, while right in front of his nose was a third piece with no pill. He downed the pill to get to the third piece.

Coyo was a gulper. Never had any trouble with him.

Kong with kibble inside and a peanut butter topper (one of her usual treats). I put the pill in the peanut butter. For topical stuff, a regular treat makes it all good. She's pretty easy in this area.

Hi, I'm new here. Waiting for my pup! For pills, Greenies makes a product called Pill Pockets. It's a soft meaty treat with a place to push the pill in. It's soft enough to squish around the pill/capsule. All goes down in one gulp!

Hi vlkea01! Welcome to the forum and happy waiting! :) enjoy the time and anticipation! especially if it's your first AI Dog!

We have one gulper (Coffey) and one dainty must chew everything thoroughly before swallowing .... (Tayamni) - she does like oocahtah's GSD, so the pill popper is the most wonderful solution! with a high value treat following it up. She actually looks forward to this routine when needed (because she wants that treat).

I tried the pill pockets with my cats and know people who use them successfully with dogs and cats, but my cats can smell the difference between empty pill pocket and one with pill and just won't tough one with a pill in it!

I'm glad there are many different ways - meat, cheese, peanut butter, pill guns, pill pockets, so we can get necessary meds into our animals that need assistance.

Finding something that works is a relief ^_^ especially when it helps them learn to submit!

Rik, I laughed when I read about the chase and corner. :o

I want to clarify that I put a "cone of shame" on her and now she acts like a tame dog " e-collar" not an electric one.

Dogs, like all animals, have an incredible radar system in reading human energy. I used to approach them with "I've got a pill for you and you WILL take it now, no matter what." I had very frustrating results......I then figured there was a better way. I took out my attitude of "YOU WILL TAKE THIS NO MATTER WHAT," and replaced it to a whispering "I've got a treat for you." At first they didn't believe me, of course they could smell the medication. However it didn't take more than a few tries, and then they did believe me. Each pup likes different additives like peanut butter or a bit of meat, or cheese surrounding the pill. I don't put the pill in their food, (they would just eat the goodies around it) but rather make it a special treat. They may not take it immediately when I want them to, but if I am patient, they will take it in due time before I have to rush off to an appointment. (thus I make the time necessary). I do not use pill taking as a time to force them into a submissive situation. (I pick those times carefully) Like little children, they think "this doesn't smell right and I know it wont taste right.....yucky pill, yucky medicine." Remember when you were little and held your nose to take medication? Like the child they will ultimately submit on THEIR terms. Remember when you mom said "you need to take this." Well I do the same thing, just in the gentle way of .... It's going to be taken and I can wait til you do. I believe that's o.k. My mission is to get those meds down with out drama and not have a battle doing it. Then again, fortunately they are so healthy, they very rarely have to take pills. In seven years, and three AIdogs, I have had two occasions to give pills, once for each of the 2 older dogs.
