This is the story of Moon; she was with her sister, that is now also with a couple in CA. Happy & getting very gray & loosing her hearing. They were originally with an older Native couple here localy in S. Oregon. The man had a heart attack & both were pretty much just in the back yard fenced in area, were they didn't get much socialising or training. We got them back & worked with them here at SDK for about 6 months & found them very good homes; Moon went to Karen & Bryan Knight in CA. & here is her story.

Kim, here is the eulogy I wrote to Moon. I miss her so much and cannot stop shedding tears over her. We cannot thank you enough for the amazing gift you have given us of our new AI pup and we will keep updating you on her progress with her new buddy Waya.

ODE TO MOON

For those of you who never were able to know Moon, I hope this gives you some idea of the great loss of such an amazing Indian Dog who found us and taught us so much.

Moon came into our lives, serious and quiet with nary a glance our way. Her tail stiffly curled with tension, loneliness imprinted on her face. Her eyes were deep and mysterious and never waivered from our own eyes. Her stare was deep and searching our faces for something. I think she eventually found what she was looking for, a family that treated her as a cherished member of the pack with love to spare. She was definitely not the lowest member of our pack, Waya volunteered happily for that job as she was his “girl” from day one. He was immediately in love with her, but it took a bit more time for her to love him. She was shiny black with yellow eyes and a white belly. Many is the time we were asked if she was a coyote even though not the color of our local coyotes.

She did learn our rules, fighting was not allowed and certain other restrictions. Once she figured this out, her life began to flourish. She learned to love Waya and us in her own particular ways. Her eyes no longer searched but shone with the beginning of adoration. It was mutual.

We patiently let her learn this was her forever home and a year later, her tail unfurled and was never curled again. It was always down with no tension in her back. She and Bryan began to form a bond that would not ever be broken. Moon’s eyes followed Bryan with every move he made. Even though she never was a “lap dog”, she always wanted to be near him. She loved her walks with Bryan best of all and would bark at the front door after her walk, so that I would open it and give her her dinner. She always slept at Bryan’s feet under his computer desk. Her second favorite thing to do was ride in the car. She and Bryan went many places, her sitting happily next to him in the front seat watching out the front window. She loved to go anywhere we were going and most of the time, we took our Indians with us.

Moon received her CGC, Canine Good Citizenship Award a few years after she came to us. I was always second to Bryan in Moon’s affections but seeing the close bond with Bryan, it made my heart sing. She also went through some obedience courses and some agility. She did very well at both of these. However, her sheep- herding days were numbered because she felt the sheep were prey and took bites of fur when she could.

I remember shortly after she was at our home, the gardener walked too close to me and she bit him. That was when we learned how protective she was with us. We felt very safe with our serious girl.

Waya would bug her into racing around the yard and in the beginning she was faster than him, leaving him in the dust. Later as she aged, Waya began to catch her. She quickly figured out how to “win“ by hiding in the bushes where he could not get to her.

As Moon aged, she experienced hearing loss. She soon learned sign language however, and so our lives continued. She was so tolerant of Waya’s antics when he got those snapping jaws going an inch from her face. She would just look at him like he was crazy. She turned into the best Indian (along with Waya). They were quite joined at the hip and wanted to be together and with the pack. I think Moon taught Waya how to counter surf but as Moon aged, she left this to Waya and then she would reap the rewards if there were any.

We traveled in our RV with Moon and Waya to many different places. Moon was a very calm traveler and was just so happy to be with us.

Moon was a gift from the Great Spirit to make our lives complete.
Our time with Moon was a true blessing and there will never be another girl like this. She taught both Bryan and I many lessons that we needed to learn. There are so many more stories but just wanted you to know her a bit. May she sleep well with her dad, the amazing Rogue.

This is Judy … owner of Shadow … Moon’s sister… Shadow is now 19 years old – Moon passed at 18 – Might be nice to put this up with Ode to Moon -

Hi Kim,

Hope all is well. I haven’t sent any recent pictures of Angel and thought you might like to see how she has grown. Last vet visit she was 40 lbs. She has been a pistol, but has become a really great dog. We enjoy her and Shadow so much! Don’t know what I would do without them.

Shadow turns 18 or 19 this month I am not sure, and Angel turns 1.

Thanks for letting us adopt Angel. When Shadow’s time comes, we will be in touch again for another pup! Don’t think Shadow could handle another pup right now, she has her paws full with Angel! J

Angel is a pretty dog. 19? Wow! You go Shadow! That is a good life.

I have always had an appreciation for Moon. I have heard several good stories and loved them all. I think she must have been a hell of a gal.
