Congrats, Linda!! I can't wait to see your pups pictures and Snake is going to love his little brother/sister!

Judy - we are so going to be at least 2 before Soul turns 2! Bwahahaha...trying to convince hubby the next one won't be quite so headstrong! How's the snow situation up by you? We have rain/snow mix and very strong winds right now!

Unfortunately, Debi, I think each of ours is more headstrong than the next! Now the snow, we had eight inches last weekend, got six more last night and it's a complete whiteout with up to 14 more today! It is absolutely gorgeous though.

I'm really struggling with a situation and if anyone of you has any suggestions I need them. My neighbor 'bought' three black-mouth kur dogs (now 4 months old). He keeps them in a pen with an igloo for protection from the weather - NO COVER! He threw a deer carcass in the pen for them to eat. Then, he brought home a 7 year old hunting hound that had kidney surgery, has him CHAINED to the fence post in an enclosed are with an igloo there too. I couldn't stand watching this poor dog pace so my husband took one of our dog beds over, put it on the porch and the poor dog was so happy he curled up (in the elements) and napped. I couldn't stand it any longer. My neighbor and I went to animal control to let them know of the pups and the older dog. My neighbor is an attorney who has represented animal abuse cases and he said there's really nothing that can be done because all the dogs have food, water and a 'shelter.' I am SICK. In this snow I look at those pups and my heart hurts. It's to the point that I really wish someone would steal all four of the dogs. I'd like to put a chain around this idiot's neck and have him walk around in the show with an old deer carcass for food. Anyone have any ideas????????

Judy,...that makes me ill to think of those poor creatures. I'll be thinking of it all day, and let you know if I come up with something.

That is revolting! I'm sorry it is right in your back yard. We all know that there are people who should not own animals, and that animals are abused and suffer, and that our ability to help them is very limited. To see a specific instance of specific animals and not be able to do anything is awful. I hope it is in your power to help them, but if it is not I hope you can find a way to live with them being there.

Judy,

Ask the attorney how giving the dogs a dear carcuss is proper food. Can someone kill a deer and feed it to there dogs? It seems just short of killing the deer and leaving it where it falls. This is sad maybe there is someone in your area like Rescue Ink. They would help. Thanks, Ryan

Ok I do not agree with the way he is taking acare of these animals and they should be taken away but as far as the deer goes there is nothing wrong with it I am not familiar with the breed of the pups but as gross as this may sound the most nutricus part of the deer is the stomach and intestine if the dog are on a raw meat diet its one of best thing he can give them its as natural as u can get and it will last them a while at least they are getting food

can your neighbor the lawyer get them taken away how do people get these animal dont they check backgrounds vets , I worked with rescues he should be pentalized.

Unfortunately, the deer carcass is considered proper food as he claims to have the dogs on a raw diet. Actually, hunting season just ended in Michigan and he and his family did bag five deer. There is nothing anyone can do to have the dogs taken away. I am extremely upset with all four of the dogs but our hands are tied legally.

Shortly after reading about your neighbor on the noon news was a report of two different cases of animal neglect. One was that a woman in Tillamook county could not take care of her 98 rat terriers but the other case was just like your neighbor. It was in Harney county which is in the Burns area. Well, those dogs had no shelter, some water, left out in sub zero temp. and were fed deer and cow carcasses. What is going with people???????? Here were 100 more dogs rescued and placed in a shelter in Portland. They said that the dogs were not aggressive but so happy to see some one that they were loving on the people that were there to help them.

Maybe you could sneek over some night and rescue them???? I know that's not right but what he is doing is inhumane.

Old Yeller was a black mouth kur -- I always thought it was a lab!!! You're right Linda, the deer carcass is considered proper food. My neighbor is very familiar with animal abuse cases and my husband is a retired police chief. While none of us like the treatment of these animals, even the animal control officer, told us she agrees with us but there's nothing we can do. The three pups are only four months old - no one even acknowledges these pups in their pen - he has three sons by three different women - two of which live with him. He shouldn't have animals because he can't even afford to pay his water bills - I know this for a fact because I work for the Village! I feel helpless for these pups. I wish he could be penalized and have the animals taken away. We go next door everyday to make sure they are fed and have water. With the temperatures dropping to well below freezing it's a travesty to have these poor animals in the cold. Needless to say, I'm highly pissed off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Judy,

That is heartbreaking. With the below zero temps, can you call animal control now? Or one of the rescue places? He must have adequate shelter for them and with there being more than 3 dogs - is there a zone in place for your area? Here in our township you can't have more than 3 dogs without a fenced yard and 30 foot run - AND shelter. It's considered the beginning of hoarding.

Other than that - well the other options are bordering on illegal - but this is what...um..."a friend" did with a similar situation in our neighborhood. This "friend" found 4 people who wanted pups in surrounding areas and then low and behold, all 4 of the mistreated dogs happened to get loose around midnight and all 4 of those people just happened to be driving by.

It was cool...or I bet it was...all undercover ops and stuff. The pups are now loved and all indoor dogs!

Your friend is very creative.

How about a letter to the editor. Get the whole village involved.

Hey Deb! Last night I cried! It was single digits here, wind howling and snowing (we've had 24 inches since last Thursday). I called the Sheriff's office. They were aware that Animal Control had been out and while no one likes what he's doing there's not a damn thing we can do about it. We have no animal ordinance here. The igloos are considered shelter. I did see one pup this morning but I see his truck in the driveway and I don't trust him. My neighbor and Larry and I feel like we're living between a ghetto house with another idiot across the street. Believe me, we've been thinking of every scenario to get these animals away from him. My heart breaks because these pups are only about four months old and there is absolutely no socialization at all with them. You'd think his three sons would be playing with these pups but his idiot girl friend doesn't want the animals inside -- you would not believe the inside of that house -- it's an absolutely PIT! Up here because everyone is related to everyone else we're afraid to ask anyone to help make these pups disappear!!! My neighbor, being a practicing attorney, is down at animal control right now based on last night's weather to see if there's something we can do but according to Michigan law, there isn't!!!! Anyone want to take a field trip to play magician and help these pups find a new home????????? During the summer he expressed an interest in our dogs and we told him right out NO WAY!

OK, I've ranted enough~~ sorry!!

Is it still "proper nutrition" if it is frozen stiff? I'm not trying to be funny - at least dogs that aren't confined are able to try to hunt warm prey. A deer carcass that has been frozen for a week combined with a dog that has been kept cold for just as long, and not able to run to get it's body warmed up, isn't a good combination. Can you try that argument?

We've tried that argument and the explanation by animal control to us is that 'they are hunting dogs and raised differently!' Well, needless to say, most of you do not know how opinionated I am and challenged that with: "Frankly, I don't give a damn what kind of dog they are raised to be they are dogs - in need of food, water and the chance to warm their bodies.' She looked at us like we had three eyes! Since there are four dogs - three pups and one 7 year old hound of some kind - we tried the kennel routine and were stopped at that because up here six dogs are considered a kennel! We are getting the door slammed in our face with every argument we present! It's extremely maddening and frustrating.

Rant, woman, rant.

BUT...http://www.michiganhumane.org/site/PageServer?pagename=cruelty will tell you what they are doing to those pups is neglect and cruelty - no matter what the local yokels say. Check the 2nd legislature on the right side and print it off. If there is no dry bedding in the igloo - they are in violation. If the water is frozen at any given time - they are in violation. If they haven't vetted them or the older dog - they are in violation. This is total and utter BS that the local law enforcement won't go out and warn him. Our county sucks (we have kill shelters that I am constantly contacting to keep dogs off death row) but our Animal Control rocks when it comes to warnings. Also - even hunting dogs need to be socialized and the Humane Society says so.

If the weather wasn't so bad, we would be planning a rescue...but it's dropping below zero and we had rain all day and night - it's like an ice rink out here right now.

And...Allison...thank you...I thought it was fun! :)

I am curious how this all worked out since the last post was weeks ago. Did the puppies get taken care of? Were you able to get anyone to do anything?

I went to the Humane Societies page that was posted; it was sad as usual, yet hopeful.

I have a question now about my dogs. They are all a little skinny; especially Luko~ta....he has always been. They get plenty to eat and are very well cared for; but, they are on the skinny side especially in the hindquarters. You can not see their ribs; just feel them. I remember out on the ranch that most of the dogs there are very similar; they look like dogs "should". You know like working dogs; fit and trim...and gorgeous. :)

Is it just a trait of these dogs that when they are the right weight they look like that? kind of sleek? When I first got Cy you could tell that she was overweight; now with us she is getting that same sleek "fast" look about her. I guess I just want to be sure that someone doesn't think my dogs are not cared for or anything like that.

Just looking in their eyes should tell people that they are very loved; some folks just don't speak dog. ;)

Unfortunately nothing has changed with the dogs next door. I have called Animal Control three times and all three times they tell me that there is nothing they can do because there is straw in the igloo and he offers them food and water - they don't give a damn that the water is frozen. By law, in Michigan, they are fine!!!!! My husband took food over the other day and the idiot had the nerve to come out and watch Larry feed HIS dogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The three puppies (now almost 6 months) have never been in the house (temps last night were 2 below) and the older hound is chained to an igloo. I don't understand why according to Michigan law this is not inhumane and abuse. I am at my wits end and I know I'm making the County Animal Officer extremely angry. I don't know what else to do for these dogs.

Judy,

Just a quick reply as I am on my way to a family night! I contacted the Humane Society in Battle Creek and they told me that if the dogs are out when there has been a weather warning (below 0 with wind chill), the local yokels have to do something or they are in violation themselves. Also, if the water is frozen, she said to call the closest ASPCA and report the guy and the local animal control. Here is their website...http://www.aspca.org/. Good luck! Happy New Year!

Hi Deb! Went to the ASPCA website and it only addresses the states of New York and New Jersey so I called NJ. They referred me right back to the Animal Control in our area. I am beside myself and driving my husband crazy. The neighbors as well as me feel like we are banging our heads on the wall. I feel so damn bad for these animals. They surely didn't ask to be a part of this dysfunctional family. I look out the window every five minutes today to see if I see life over there and there's nothing. With all the TV shows that I watch that the animal control officers are on the scene johnny on the spot I wonder what's wrong with Michigan!!!??? Even the Sheriff's Office referred me right back to Animal Control - I've called the Humane Society in Charlevoix, Traverse City and Harbor Springs. The one email response I received was that the office is closed until Wednesday but left a number, which you know I immediately called. A recording came on and advised me the office is closed until Monday morning. When I told the Sheriff's office I'd like to have the dogs 'disappear' the response was don't do anything 'silly' that will get ME in trouble with trespassing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't understand why the people in charge and have the ability to make a difference won't make a difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG...I feel your frustration. Let me call a few people I know in the Detroit rescue service and see if they have any suggestions. With our temps being below zero all weekend, I cannot believe yours were warmer!

Ours have been below zero and we have the lake effect wind so the wind chill is no less than 14 below. This afternoon we had another event. The owner was away -- up in Mackinac for a poker tournment (can't pay his bills but he can gamble) and had a 'friend' feed and water the dogs -- this was 1:20 this afternoon. I stood in the kitchen window and watched two cottage cheese size cups of dry kibble dumped over the fence. The next involved trying to get the gate open for the water bowl. He was kicking at the dogs and when one pup got out he grabbed it by the throat. I went absolutely ballistic. I flew out the back door and screamed at him. The idiot looked at me like I had three eyes and started shaking his head at me -- like mind your own business lady -- and I started yelling at him again. Called the owner when I saw him outside tonight and asked him to come over, which he did. He said he'd talk to his 'friend' but could give me no reason why the animals cannot come into the house. Larry made some beef broth and soup bones and took them over. He mixed in kibble and fed all four of the dogs. He said they gobbled up the warm soup and kibble - sure something warm in their bellies. I feel like I'm banging my head on a brick wall and the only one upset is Larry and I. I can't believe these official animal care facilities can look me in the face and tell me the animals are fine!

Hey Judy, I did think about these dogs this winter, and wonder about them. Thought I'd bring this thread back up to the top, so you could vent.

So sorry to hear that they are still being treated so badly. What is wrong with people?

Thanks for bringing this back up. Out of the five that live at this property - notice I don't call it a house because it's a pit - I have only seen one moving about. We cooked for them last winter but because my neighbor has a pending abuse lawsuit filed against them we can no longer go on the property. Get this -- we can be sited for trespassing. The mentality of the Humane Society and Animal Control Department of the Sheriff's office is mind boggling to me. We get the run around, told they are hunting dogs not pets to which we have all yelled they are an animal and deserve much better treatment. This guy is an alcoholic, his sons have severe mental problems (wonder why) and basically they just don't care about anything except finding their next drink. We are hopeful that the house goes into foreclosure again and he's gone. It's just so frustrating when people agree to accept an animal into their homes and treat them so poorly. Thanks for letting me vent -- yet again.

Not that I condone such behavior- but too bad someone (unrelated to you, Judy) can't come in in the dark of the night and do a commando-rescue op and remove the dogs to a better location- preferably in a different state. ...

grr

people like this make loose faith in humanity.

They are what a friend of mine calls "critters" (aka Not humans, merely worthy of extermination.)
