Xochitl Updates

Recommended Posts

I'll keep her updates and pictures over here in case people are wondering how she is doing.

This week should be 12/13 weeks and she is weighing in at about 17lbs. I'm thinking she should plateau at some point? Otherwise I think she is going to be a big girl!

She is the most headstrong pup I've ever owned and we're T-Minus 17 days until she can go out and play safely - which, thank goodness because her energy is picking up day to day and I think that throwing a ball down our hallway will not be enough for her soon! We will have plenty of dog parks, bars, hiking trails, and adventures to get into once she is up to date.

People are always commenting on how "crazy" she looks - like a miniature dog rather than a rotund puppy. She is getting leggier by the day as well!

Oh MY!!! How ADORABLE is Xochitl!!!! Love the "I'm sorry" pic, and especially the crazy eyed belly rub picture!!! Wyot looks like that too...He loves belly rubs, and gets nuts chasing the ball I kick up and down the room- barks at it, swats at it and runs like a maniac...but thankfully, we have a big field behind the house, and today we were able to go and run with him, because the snow was down to 4 inches instead of 12- that may change tomorrow. He is leggy as well, but filling out nicely. :)

That was December. How about now? Xochitl is beautiful. How do we pronounce that name? Sho-kee-tle? Help!

It is Aztec and pronounced "Soh-chee". Or, if you want to put the "L stop", "Soh-cheel". :)

She is going through quite the leggy phase right now and I am excited to let her run full speed once she is completely up to date on shots (last one on Friday). Austin is a dog city and so taking her out and about is out of the question since all trails and sidewalks have an innumerable amount of pups on them and I'm paranoid. Almost there though! Being in the house is no longer "enough" for her and she is getting restless. But she is coming of age at a perfect time when our greenbelt is filled to the brim with water and the heat doesn't melt you while you're walking to the swimming hole.

Her personality is sure coming out now and she is out of the Tasmanian Devil stage. While she does have her needle teeth still, she has learned to back off quite a bit. My husband no longer looks like he was mauled by a baby tiger all the time. ;) - I've been having a blast chatting with Zola's owner as the sisters are both rather rambunctious and I love to hear the stories. They also look so similar!

We're starting puppy play classes and then going into obedience shortly thereafter. We have already had the talk of "when should we add another one to our pack"? - and decided to wait until she at least has her Canine Good Citizenship before adding another mini-monster to our household.

Here are some updated pics!

Beautiful pictures of her!!! That face.... I know what you mean by leggy phase- Wyot is growing that way too. The biting has lessened a bit with him as well. He still tries to sneak in a few, and loves to nip at my uggs when I put them on- perhaps he's just hurrying me along, because he knows it means we are going outside. :P

We have a gate up in the house for now (keeping his territory more manageable until he is older) separating the living room from the entry and kitchen area. Those two rooms are his, and we hang out with him a lot in the kitchen. The spaces are quite large, and it is a tile floor. This is where he runs like a maniac (even after a walk, he will do the zoomies, lol) in figure eights! Ball tossing, or tug of war with squeaky toy is his favoirite. Springtime, will see the frisbee come out....it was truly great this past weekend to see him run off leash and enjoy the outdoors without restrictions...AND know that he does listen. (whew!) You will have SO much fun with her when she plays and runs free for a while! Enjoy... :)

Get a load of those ears :D Outstandingly wonderful. They look like they are making her head go to one side....Love it.

Speaking of ears, one day I was stopped on the road because of construction ahead....this guy jumped out of his truck (he was sitting shotgun) and came up to my car window. "Excuse me," he says, "Are your dogs ears naturally that way or did you have them "pinned" when he was a pup?" My answer was THEY ARE NATURAL, of course." He laughed, and answered, "I knew it, I win, ha ha." and off he went back to the truck to tell his friend, the driver, that he had won their bet. Ears........just gotta love them on these pups.

Tonka Sitsi had quite the head of ears so I can't imagine she will grow into them too much.

Wyot has those ears too...what a beauty Xochitil is!!

Xochitil and Waka' are similar in height, TALL. No doubt that when off-leash she is a fast runner. Waka' is still a "flight-risk" so completely fenced areas are a must. If you haven't acquired a harness for her yet I would recommend HURTTA brand made in Finland. Much better control than a collar plus, no choking effect. Coupled with a retractable leash it makes for a perfect match for walking, jogging, etc.

Waka' is definitely Kaposia's brother! Still a flight risk (fences necessary) FAST, and yes, the harness is far better than attaching leash to collar. We too, use a long retractable leash for walks, and everybody's happy! Credit for the photo goes to the owner of MeiHi Yip Yip, it was taken on a play date.

We have had her on a harness - because my goodness it is the best way to catch her at the dog park without choking her as she runs by. :P We haven't had the opportunity to do much off-leash, but we have lots of hiking to do this summer where we can give her a little more room. Once she got out and was "playing catch me if you can" with us in the parking lot. Talk about a heart attack!

But yes - her legs are cracking me up and I'm wondering how much taller/bigger she is going to get. She is 20 weeks today, 25 lbs, and 18.5 inches at the withers. But I know these pups grow and mature super fast so I'm just not sure where she is on the spectrum!

Here are some of her most recent pics. Where did my puppy go?!

She is such a young lady!!!!!!! She reminds me of Tayamni (not the coloring just something about her.... maybe the way she is sitting in the first pic?)

They do grow so fast. In their sleep or naps sometimes.

maybe it is the "catch me if you can". Tayamni ran out the front door twice in her first year and luckily tore around the backyards of other houses. I would call her calmly and she would stop, look, come full on run toward me and veer off about 6 - 8 feet away. She thought it was the funniest thing! This went on about 10 minutes each time she got out until she decided she had enough fun. Of course never scolded her when she finally came up to me.

I wish we had good trails to teach off leash when Tayamni was a little pup.

Ohhhh, I feel for your heart attack moment!!!!!! Glad it turned out safe!

I found what I had posted when Tayamni was 16 weeks old. She was 21.1 lbs and 17" at the withers.

The Vet I was using then said she would probably be 40 - 45 lbs tops. HA HA HA. I have a 52 pounder!

She is a little chunky when she gets up to 54 pounds but I limit her food and exercise her a little more and she keeps her girlish figure!

My guess was Tayamni would be 45 lbs and 22" in at withers. She blew past 45 lbs before a year old.

I will try to remember to measure her and report back!

Right on the nose there with what we experienced - and yeah, no scolding when she came home. I was happy to have her there and I never want her running away from me! She is okay at recall right now, but we will see as soon as the trails and shiny things are introduced.

She is definitely slowing down a bit on her weight gain and is becoming lean and long - but I'm dying to know how tall she will be. With Rune being her Uncle, I think she has a lot of similarities to him. :)

OMG...right there with the heart attack moment!!! We have Wyot on a harness as well, and it helps tremendously, I agree. The ONLY thing that works in getting him back to us when he is in that frenzy, is "TREAT"! He comes back in an instant, and comes to sit in front of us in anticipation, and then I gratefully click his leash on, and hug and praise after he consumes the little treat. It is used as a last resort, however.

Wyot is 25 lbs right now, and he is lean, has looooong legs and now the fur on his head is changing color! He's got whitish fluff that is coming up and around and making his face look fuller. I'm excited to see where all that will take him in his coloring. I see that Xochitil also has changed coloring a bit in places...puppydom changes SO quickly!! And, the love grows... :)

Tayamni has been about the same height, length, and weight since a year and 9 months. 22" at withers, 21" back (withers to tail croup) and 52 lbs.

Coffey (who has some Talhtan in him and has a little different look) is still gaining weight I think ... will check at Vet tonight ....

he seems to have kept the same height and length for a couple months now. He is 1 yr and 8 months now and 21.5" at withers, 19" back (withers to tail croup) and around New Years he was 36 pounds.

He has finally started to fill out - it is starting with his rib cage area and then front of chest. I think he will gain a little more as he fills out. Will he top 40 lbs? I wonder. I never thought he fill out -- LOL!

I had guessed Tayamni's future height correctly I just didn't expect her to get longer after she finished growing tall!!!!! :P

She lengthened almost 2 inches after she was a year old as she was filling out. I would notice it at the dog park because of how she wraps around and under my legs there and I could compare to other dogs she plays with regularly. I would have thought 22" & 20" (and staying under 50 lbs) then she had a last growth spurt getting longer.

She is my first AI Dog so I had no idea what to expect, was just going from farming background and guesstimating from pictures of other AI Dogs.

So I think Xochitl will be on the smaller side? I know her and Zola turn 6 months on the 29th of this month. Where did time go?

And where did the troublesome pup go as well? Now that we take her to the dog park for an hour or two a day, not only has she chilled the F out, but is [occasionally] listening to us. This weekend we go to the greenbelt trails here in Austin for the first time. Wish us luck. I know she is a puddle dog. I'm hoping she is a water one as well.

Here right eye is currently in transition. I'm not sure what color it will turn but half of it is this weird green color - no longer the "white walker blue" she had previously. I love that they are always changing - my little chameleon.

Weighs: 30lbs

Withers: 19 inches

Back: 18 inches

Here are some updates pictures of my pretty pup!

Wow, how beautiful she is!! So glad to hear that she calmed down a bit...it is scary when they bolt and don't listen...Wyot goes out without a leash most of the time, and is pretty good, and listens much better as well. It's a maturity thing, I guess. He just turned 5 months, about three weeks behind Xochitl. (he was born the 11th of Oct). He is approximately the same weight and size as Xochitl too! I am hoping he will grow a little more. Chameleon is right! His body is black, as is his little mask on his face...however, his head and fur that has thickened and comes out on the sides of his head have changed to a light cinnamon color, mixing with the black a little. He is gorgeous! I love to watch the changes....now, I wish I could figure out how to post pics...I have posted to other forums before, but cannot for the life of me figure out why I cannot do it here...one day..
