Starghoti 466
Well, we have a new "pack member" Not that the dogs really know or care.. lol This is Bug (no he doesn't have a real name..) and he is a 1.5 mo old Preying Mantis. (Chinese var.) He is currently about 2" long, and will likely grow to almost 4" at full adulthood. Fun and entertaining pet. Easy to keep, no noise, feed every couple days... And they are very aware of what is going on around them.. Good thing he isn't going to get much bigger.. or we would worry about him escaping and eating us in our sleep! lol
miz molly 1,800
Only you Star, could pull this off. Is Bug in a terrarium in your kitchen?

Chinatola 927
I have yet to find the praying mantis section of the local pet smart. Do they have little praying mantis beds for them along with blankets and chew toys and small little tennis balls for the mantis to chase around? Do you let bug sleep at your feet in the bed but then in the middle of the night does bug get up and go out on the couch were all the big bugs are expected to keep watch over their pack? How 'bout on walks? Does bug pull on the leash a little or have you pretty much broken that bad habit out of him? Speaking of a mantis leash, how do you fasten them? Do they have buckles or clips or what? Inquiring minds want to know.....
Starghoti 466
Allison: she (?) is eating a small cricket. The big fruit flies were far too small. And she has a small jar lid with meal worms for snacking on between meals. Chinatola: you are weird... O_O lol
Allison 2,369
We have Preying Mantis' here, in Eastern Wa., and they are very fun. I did not realize how they can alter their color so totally, until I found one on my orange extension cord. Yes! She was Orange! I once faced off with one. We circled each other, dukes up and at the ready. It was a fantastic experience. You can never look at bugs quite the same, after that. Let us know how she does, Star. I will be curious. Lisa 130
Hey has anyone ever had a walking stick for a pet? My daughter started them when she was in 4th grade. The summer is no problem because their favorite food the black berry leaves are plentiful but the winter was hard to find. She kept them in a special home made for them with holes for air. The funny thing was when they had babies the babies would magically appear crawling around the room because they were so small they could sneek out of the holes. So sometimes sitting and listening to music something would catch my attention and there would be a baby walking stick crawling on the stereo speaker. They were fun for a long time then it got to be too much when they were multiplying all the time and you couldn't find enough people to take them.
Sherab 2,337
Bug is cool looking. I had a monarch one summer. That was fun. When the crysylis gets all see through that's neat. It was a girl (no black spot on wing) and we named her Queenie. It was a good metaphore for kids - you can't help them break out of the crysylis and you can't mess with them until they pump their wings flat. They have to do it themselves or you can kill them helping. She flew off after her wings dried but before that she sat on my shirt for a long time. Funny how a summer is a long time to a kid. Now you can order butterflies on line. http://www.carolina.com/living-organisms/insects/butterflies/10582.ct?s_cid=ppc_ms_macro+butterflies&utm_source=msn&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=[roi]+macro+-+butterflies&utm_content=order+butterflies&utm_term=order%20monarch%20butterfly
Lisa 130
When my daughter was in early grade school we use to order catapillars every spring. What a cool thing to watch in it's magical stages of developement. We ordered them through Insect Lore. I hope they are still around now that she has a baby of her own and she can carry on that fun activity with him. L.
Allison 2,369
Hello bug! Happy to see you thriving. We have some egg cases in our yard. I am mentoring them, as best I can.
