9 pups:

Kim has been helping Katchina feed them. He is supplementing with Goat's milk, and has been doing this for many weeks. He says they are very close, and hand fed, each one.

These are the basic colors:

Lucky you, who are waiting for these pups....hand fed, extra cared for.... Beautiful.

Thanks for posting a photo of Luka. All of the recent pups look so much like him, but it looks like there is more variation in this newest litter.

When we got Danza, people were little more than Feet to her - it took her a few days to get the hang of people, then she was all for them. These pups might have a leg up on the people thing! A leg up on the goat thing, too.

That's great! Are you getting a Male or a Female?

Do you have to wait 6 months to have the pup shipped over?

We head down to Kim's place a week from today to pick up ours.

I'll take some more photos of the litter for you, especially if he can tell me which one is for you.

I get to receive one of these pups too! This will be my first AI dog and the first dog I will have raised on my own. I'm really excited, and a little nervous. I will be driving down next Saturday to pick it (hopefully a her) up. I can hardly wait.

That's Great! We will have to keep in touch!

We will be driving down on Thursday. We may hang around the area for a couple of days, so maybe we'll run onto you.

Kim said there were more females than males in this litter, so you may be in luck.

Puppy Tip: take a clean, soft blanket down with you and rub it on mom, dad, litter mates, Kim...whoever's available that will smell familiar to the pup and ease her transition.

Hi, My name is Ophelia and I live in San Jose, CA. A male from the litter is mine. I don't know which one yet, because Kim is suppose to pick one for me, and he wants me to wait and wait and wait.....;))..... until he is sure which one would be fine for me. I am very excited about getting a Native Indian Dog. I have read so much about them and they seem to be very interesting. We already have a dog who is 10 years old. A little Shitz tzu. A very sweet and calm dog. Hopefully the two dogs will get along fine. Kim is going to pick one for me and try to find a ride for the little pup to get to his new home. I might even try to go and pick him up if I can. Not sure how to get him home!

If I go to pick him up for sure will use the puppy tip from Gavin, to take a clean, soft blanket with me. Any other tip would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

When we went to pick Shunka up, luckily it was in Wales and not Scotland where he was born, so it was only a couple of hours journey. We used the soft blanket routine, in fact it was a piece of the blanket all the pups and Mum and Dad had been lying on.

Skye (Shunka's mother) jumped into the car, not a thing she normally would do, so I told her I would look after her son for her, and he would be well loved, it seemed as though that was all she wanted to know, she looked at me for a few seconds then jumped out of the car.

We got him home and it was if he had always been there he was quite at home and happy.

Liz, I love that story. That's a great one for the book--another good idea.

Well,

I just got back yesterday from my long trip. I picked up my new pup Monday evening. She handled the trip very well, and I think it helped her bond to me. She did wine a lot the first hour, but she calmed down and eventually fell asleep on my lap. The next morning I started the tough love routine and wouldn't let her out of the passenger seat. I was surprised how quickly she learned what no meant. She needed occasional reminding, but usually a verbal command was sufficient. I was also very surprised at how close to house broken she is. She already lets me know by the way she acts that she needs to go outside. She never once went in the car on the two day trip back home. Anyway, I haven't picked a name yet, but will soon. Here is a picture of her chilling on the back patio after some rough housing in the back yard today. I'll post more as she matures.

Hope you have your pup.

We have to wait until the pup (grey male) is 10 weeks old. I hope you took pictures and if you can tell me more about them. Kim promised to send a picture but I can hardly wait to see him.

I know they have a great home there but if you know you may have one you want it as soon as possible!! Only a couple off weeks to go :P;)

It would be more of a problem here, they don't have to be quarantined if they have been innoculated against rabies, but it has to be done at least 6 months before. if the pup isn't innoculated it's 6 months quarantine.

I can move Shunka to Europe as long as he has been innoculated for 6 months, and I have to have him treated aginst fleas, ticks and worms before bringing him back, and that has to be verified by a vet. he has to have his own passport too!

Great Pup shot, Drifter. I have always loved that dusty coloring. Wear her out while you can. Pretty soon they could run a city block with their energy. :P

Angelique,...I'm so jealous. Sorry you have to wait the extra weeks. It must be killing you.

She's so pretty!

I've been thinking a lot about the 'tough love' approach lately, and trying to approach my 6-mo-old dog in a way that is both respectful of who she is and more deserving of her respect. Just the decision to make a shift has made a difference.

I was having trouble connecting with her; I knew it would happen, but her focus shifts in a way that is new for me. I didn't always have her attention and it was frustrating. I started trying to look at things from her point of view more, and I'm happy to say that the last week has made a big difference in both her behavior and our relationship. Trying to not be such a commanding force in her life has made her much happier to listen to me, and asking her to cooperate rather than comply has made her suddenly much more affectionate and, paradoxally, eager to do as I ask.

I was too focused on training 'rules' such as make her calm down before she eats, do not let your dogs on the furniture because that somehow makes them 'equal' with you, etc. It made me not see her for who she is. I still have rules of course, and many of them haven't changed (because, for example, I don't want dogs on my furniture), but I'm not doing anything that doesn't make sense to me. She really appreciates it!

Have fun with the pup, and congratulations on the house-breaking. I hope it lasts!

Excellent write up, Karen. I've got so many replies to this, it's really a Pandora's Box,..but I'll just say, you are beginning to see how truly sentient these dogs are.

thats a beautiful puppy.

Yes that is a pretty little puppy. It seems like Kim finally picked one for me, and I am dying to see a picture of him. Unfortunately Kim could not find a ride for my little pup. I really want to go and pick him up myself, however I cannot leave San Jose until almost the end of the month because of my work. I was so upset yesterday for not being able to see the puppy soon, that I was dreaming about dogs last night. :P

Kim said that my pup is more of a tan red than Joshua’s. He said that Rebbecca's pup looks a lot like mine, so I am hoping that she post a picture of her little puppy.

Well, congratulation to those who got their puppies. Wish I had mine too, but I guess I have to wait. ;)

Be well,

Ophelia

You may be better off getting him a little older. After two days my little pup has latched onto me like I was her mom. It is nearly impossible for me to leave her in the back yard for long enough to make myself some dinner (usually 30 minutes). She gets so worked up after only 5-10 minutes that it sounds like someone is using her as a pinyata. Anyone have any advice?

This is what you have to look forward too. She is probably lonesome for her littermates and is crying out for them. Don't get frustrated, they calm down after awhile. My Hawk is 3 1/2 and he is my shadow. I can't go to the bathroom without him waiting for me at the door. This is there personality. Maybe take out her blanket she sleeps with or a toy she likes and place it outside with her. This may give her some asurance. I wouldn't run out there everytime she cries for you. Let her see that your still around, or tell her that she is in charge of the yard. I always tell Hawk that he's in charge of the house when we leave and that we will be back. He usually goes and lays down then.

It does get better. Lisa

Are you using a crate yet? That should solve your problem. We have two floors, so we had one for upstairs and one for down, and I'd move them if I needed to. She loves her crate, and runs to sleep in it every night, even though we leave the door open now.

I have a question and am wandering if anyone can help me!

I sent an e-mail to Kim and asked if he could send the puppy by plane, and I am waiting for him to reply. However I thought I ask you nice people if any of you have had an experience in this kind of situation. I like to have the puppy as soon as possible and it is difficult for me to leave San Jose right now until the end of the month. And Kim might not find anyone to give the little puppy a ride to my place, therefore I am thinking that maybe I can ask Kim to send him by plane. I have no experience with this at all, and if any of you can help me to let me know what is the process I would be very grateful. Of course it all depends if Kim can do this. Thanks.

Hi Ophelia. Kim certainly sends pups by plane, but it is all dependent on where they are going, and plane schedules, etc. He'll let you know. Hopefully, he can get your pup out locally, and not have to drive all day to Portland. He likes to get them on a direct flight, and there are many factors, and restrictions for live cargo. Kim is experienced in these matters, and I am sure he will get back to you as soon as he is able.

I know how you must be feeling....good luck.

Thank you Allison for the reply and support. I am still waiting for Kim to reply back. I know he must be pretty busy these days. I really would like to have the puppy soon, and I wish I could drive up there and pick him up, however as i said before I cannot leave San Jose until the end of the month. Also I was thinking that it might even be more practical to have kim send the puppy by the plain. I do however feel bad for the puppy to be separated from his family and be by himself on the plane for couple of hours.

Anyway, thanks again for the reply. Be well.

Crate training can be a life saver. I remember those days, when my dog Cassie was a puppy, and it seemed I could never get anything done without keeping a constant eye on her. The crate helped a lot, but be prepared for some major resistance at first. Ignore as best you can the crying and fussing, and eventually, she will calm. Like Karen said, they grow to love the crate. I too keep the door open for Cassie, and even at 2 years old, she loves it (still barely fits!). In fact, she gets mad if I close the door and tries to push it back open.

Hang in there!
