Greg 2,662
It does happen. Anoki has chewed off the end of a garden hose and shredded a seat cushion to my wife's swing. I needed to replace both items anyway . I didn't catch him in the act and therefore couldn't correct him for doing it. But I am sure he heard how unhappy I was about it as I was cleaning up the mess.
Nanette 107
Sorry Rik! They do avoid after trouble don't they? Elena hasn't destroyed much....yet...
Carolyn 454
Oh dear grass catcher is a biggie. It's the little things here. Her beds, the handles off of a great new plastic tub, the tabs off pot holders, two soccer balls...at 18 months she mostly likes to snatch things and watch us act like goof balls. Doesn't desytroy things, just teases us and slobbers all over her prize. She's getting pretty good at "leave it", but we're not there yet.

Denise E. 1,485
Tayamni chewed open her beds, a foam mat, she's knows that gets me - because I keep picking up the pieces so she doesn't eat them. There were the stones, what little grass the backyard had (she pulled the roots and chewed on them), put a couple holes in the fabric and embroidered furniture pieces and last but not least - ruined the carved wooden arm of a winged barrel, ball and claw antique chair! That one hurt (me not her). Ā Antiques are hand me downs (I was a New Englander) but the carvings on this chair were in pristine condition - OH WELL. Ā I always upped her chewy toys, bones, bully sticks, cow toes - which helped redirect a lot. Ā Then our friend KEME and family introduced her to coconuts - and that has been the BESTEST favorite play things EVER!!!!!!!!! Ā I feel pretty fortunate that she is willing to be redirected, AND that the bitter spray works for the arm of that chair. She has returned to the scene of the crime - as she loves to lounge in it and - well the wooden arm is like some one putting an appetizer in her face!
Allison 2,369
Tell us more about coconuts. I mean, how are they a toy?
Denise E. 1,485
ok. Ā When you buy a coconut in a store it usually has a hard brown shell and the good stuff is inside it. Ā Well, coconuts grow with an outer shell and as it dries becomes a fibered husk underneath the outer shell. The outer shell Is not as hard as the inner dark brown shell we associate with coconuts in cartoons, that's the inner shell next to the coconut meat. Ā When the coconuts fall the are green and the outer husk turns brown in time. As it dries it turns brown and there the outer husk usually cracks in a couple places. Ā This is PRIME dog toy material! Tayamni and my sister's dog (doxie terrier) LOVE the coconuts! Ā I have found different size coconuts and tossed them in the back yard. They look like footballs. Ā The cracks and the drying make it great for the dogs to tear the outer husks apart! They place tug with the coconut, Ā Make believe they are running backs and run around carrying the coconut in mouth, Ā they have both stood over a coconut and peeled off thin strips of husk and toss that to the ground and grab another piece of husk to strip! (they aren't interested in eating the husk) Ā When the "shell" is showing my sister and I break that off and throw it away. It's uuuber hard - some people say it's OK for dog to bite and some say that shell can break a dog's tooth. I play it safe. Ā The dogs at my house just love to tear the whole coconut apart. A small (double fist size) coconut will last a week once it starts drying and a big one can last up to a month - once they get into it so much, the wedges get smaller and smaller and I get mulch quicker. Ā I have heard that the inside - the coconut meat (that we eat is good for dogs, too) BUT - the coconuts Tayamni uses as a multipurpose toy is too dried and there is no liquid or white coconut meat. Ā KEME's Mom said his Vet has remarked how nice his teeth are and they believe its because Keme tears apart the coconut! I can see how the fibers could act like a toothbrush! Ā When I get that U-tube account going (someday) - I'll post some video of the many canine coconut uses! Ahhh no, we won't see Tayamni on the beach sipping through a straw! Ā Ā Ā

Thanks for the great idea Denise. Ā Thanks TO KEYWESTMAMA22!!!!!!! I never would have thought of this on my own. Ā I brought a partially shredded one in the house (usually we leave them outside) - but Tayamni needed something extra to focus on while healing from her spay. Coconuts are a blessing! Rik 183
I was giving Nita her flea pill today and she thought it was a toy and threw it around like a ball for 10 minutes, Then i put it in her food and she ate it. On another point how can i get her to stop digging up potato's up and eating them?
Sherab 2,337
You will probably need to put in a "rabbit fence" around your garden. Mine dig but don't eat. We put in a paver walk way to the barn because I was sick of falling in holes. Now I know if I stick to the pavers I won't fall in.
Carolyn 454
Oh yeah, the garden...that soft diggable soil, those fun raised beds to stomp around on the delicate greens, a glove left carelessly by, the gate left open...this week we extended the garden and added more fencing to keep out little critters and deer and stuff and her. She doesn't eat either. If I'm weeding or planting in other flower beds, though, that's when she digs ...guess she's helping...or not...Her personal favorite is weed barrier cloth. One tiny edge showing is all it takes to send her into a pulling, digging, dirt flinging frenzie.
