Hi everyone. We have 2 Indian dogs Khaleesi almost 6 and Takota who will be 3 in March. Takota is a really playful dog with lots of energy. He catches a frisbee like a pro. In fact I have never had a dog that just knew how to play like him. He plays tug of war great, he is the best at fetch and he is a pro at hide and go seek. Last week though we noticed he had some pain in his right leg. He sleeps with my son and he no longer is able to jump on the bed. When he tries to get on the couch he has to go one foot at a time and no longer jumps. Last Friday he was just laying on the couch and then started crying in pain for about 30 seconds and would not put his right leg down for a few minutes. Hes walking fine and can even trot but he can not do any explosive movements like jumping and sprinting. I took him to the vet and he placed him on some anti inflammatory's and gave us some pain pills hoping this will work. He noticed he reacted more when the vet got to his right hip area. If this does not work we will have to get him x ray's. Has anyone experienced anything like this with their dogs?

So sorry to hear about poor Takota! Our Wyot is only 16 months old, but AI dogs, as active as they are, anything is possible...it's hard to get them to rest, but perhaps he will, and together with the anti-inflammatory, he will get better soon. I wish him a speedy recovery!

Ayita is 4 and playing ball is her main interest. She won't fetch, so we play "catch." She loves to jump really high to catch the ball. As seniors, we requested and received a lower energy girl. She is perfect. Between ages 2 and 3 she seemed to injure her hip from time to time. Not so serious that she cried out or couldn't get up in the car or on the bed though. Mostly just limping. Had to watch her though as she would keep on playing if we let her. An exam and X-rays showed no damage and we were given something for the inflammation and pain pills to use when needed. Also, to keep her on leash for a couple of weeks. This worked for us and she made a complete recovery each time. I still watch her closely, but she seems stronger at 4 and has had fewer episodes of injury. Hope this helps.

Darmok is a very high energy 14 month old and has been injured a couple of times. Once at the dog park he was playing with a 100 pound Mastiff pup who rolled over on to both of Darmok's front legs. It was pretty horrible. I kept him in the house for about a week and gave him puppy asprin as directed. Also, he yelps every now and again when we get back from dog parks. He's just so active that I just expect now that he's going to be sore. An adrenaline junkie friend of mine told me once that since he's into extreme sports he's bound to have extreme injuries from time to time. I apply that thinking to Darmok ( though I just wish he'd take it easy but lol not going to happen.). Please keep us posted on your pup's recovery.

Poor Takota. It's hard to keep them subdued while they heal. I don't think it's abnormal for these dogs to over do it. We use to say they played like they were on fire. Cake once gave herself a concussion playing too hard with Waki. Waki had a sore hip from Cake grabbing his rear leg and holding on to it. We had to work to get her to knock that off. As she grew taller than Waki she was hyper flexing him. Waki poked Fen in the eye with his foot and the eye swoll up. Waki also pulled Shiva's tail and that required lots of intervention. Shiva had a bald spot for a while. Cake had a repetitive shoulder injury from beating on Waki too hard when she was 18 mo - 2 that we licked with laser therapy. We just accept that if we aren't going to treat our dogs like veal then there will be injuries. We have a great vet and we know 2 excellent 24 hour emergency clinics. Probably it's nothing too serious like dysplasia or a fracture of some kind or the Vet would have recommended the X-rays and not waited. Cold laser therapy can do wonders for strains and pulls. Don't let him do too much too fast or you will be right back at restrictions. Better to do a lot of leash walking and swimming if you have that locally to rebuild @ lower impact. How's his weight? If he's got any extra try to take that off through diet to help things out. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. His weight is good. He is in terrific shape. The vet checked his heart one time and could see how nervous he was but said "boy this is some athlete, hie's terrified but his heart rate is low for being so scared." Still not much improvement as of now. We've been keeping him quiet but he is dying to play.

Coffey is 2.5 yrs. He has a little different situation. Someday I will make a thread about it. He is in Physical Therapy now - for months and he has pulled muscles & tendons more often since we started therapy because it is correcting posture that he got out of whack from injuries. We are retraining the muscles to support him better to have LESS soft tissue injuries ....

We had X-rays, front & back, been to Vets and Ortho surgeon specialists. It is NOT congenital. No dysplasia. Injuries caused by him. He runs fast and hit a hole in the ground when a puppy and rolled and the speed pushed his shoulder blade over and flattened the socket. He compensated well for the new alignment, has great range of motion but it is cascading elsewhere into spasms & pulled muscles.

I remember Kim has cautioned to monitor the types of exercise because these dogs have more flexible joints as puppies. Well Boy do they!!!!!!

We have kept Coffey leashed to us for a week or so at a times when soft tissue injuries come up to restrict his movement or he would still run all over the place.

All this under Vets supervision. Supplements too.

X-Rays are expensive but worth it to know what is going on. Coffey had one injury that didn't swell for 3 days and he didn't limp until it swelled.

That was broken front toes and they had started healing so Vet said it was too late to just splint.

He doesn't let us know he is in pain. He has tried to go around three legged (back right leg foot in air) - I know what you are talking about.

He is like the energizer bunny and just keeps going!!!!!!

Good luck!!!! I know it is hard to get these dogs to rest. Of course It IS better to help them heal now than keep repeating injuries.

Please let us know how it goes :)
