Yesterday we went to Schiphol to pick up our Hinto.

Unfortunately, due to some policy changes he arrived 2 weeks later then scheduled and with a different airline. After all the horror stories we heard about the complications at pick up, we expected the worst (4 hour + of waiting time). But, thanks to this new airline, that is obviously better to deal with, the puppies (ours & Noaki from a dutch couple) were ours after just 50 minutes !

The first meeting with Hinto was already great ! He was so enthusiastic, he was happily wagging his tail, licking our hands from excitement to see us. It just clicked from the first moment...

After we handled the paperwork, we gave the two pups a chance to play with eachother for the last time before heading home.

In the car he was already very attentful to us. He also warned us that it was time for us to stop and take him outside, but on the highway, you can't just pull over whenever he needs to. Little accidents did happen, but that's the way it is with little pups.

When we got home, we first had to introduce him to our cat "Katté". Katté, by the way, doesn't like other animal, especially not dogs. So this was an exciting moment for them, but also for us ! The first encountered seemed to go allright -they were practically nose to nose- until Katté didn't trust it anymore and tried to scratch him. He reacted very scared, so we comforted him about this for the first but also the last time. From now on, it's up to them to work it out amongst themselves. Katté left upstairs, and we didn't see her again until Hinto was sleeping. She came over to him, very slowly and quietly, to get a glimps and smell his scent. They're not friends yet, but it's a start.

We walked around the yard with Hinto a couple of times to get to know his new environment. The chicks (we've got 5 of them and 1 rooster) immediately caught his attention. He didn't startle them, he just sat down and looked at them.

Hinto is just great for us. We couldn't have imagined him to be more perfect for us then he is ! He is so reactive to us, he follows us around everywhere we go, he even already understands the concept of "here", he is so playful and willingly. He's a good eater (no problem adjusting to the new food), a good sleeper, and he can howl like the biggest and baddest of them ;)

He is the best puppy we could have hoped for !

Thanx you guys for all your replies !!!!

We're working on it from day 1 to give him the guidance he needs, so he'll grow up to be a wonderful dog. We even took a took a 2 week holiday to teach him the basics, to adapt to us and our way of life and to give him a chance to socialise with all sorts of environments, other dogs and other people.

Of course, this way it will be harder for him once we have to go back to work, but we'll gradually work towards that moment.

Today he went to the vet for the first time (in Belgium at least). His paperwork is in order, he got a new chip (american chips aren't compatible in Europe), and he got his follow-up shots. He underweant it all without problem, crying or protest.

As you can see he is also a good sleeper :) This isn't his usual sleeping spot, but he likes it under the table..

American Chips aren't compatible? Then why do they make us do it? It seems so pointless. Oh, wait,...I forgot, that is Government's most important job, making us run through pointless exercises that cost us time and money, and make them feel important.

I am glad to hear that Hinto has such good people, to take time off for his beginning. That will make a big difference.

Hey, Allison!! Are the ID chips mandatory in your neck of the woods???? I don't know why I think I know this BUT I think the problem with the American/European chips are translation issues ... don't ask me why I say this cuz I don't know. I either read it or someone talked about it somewhere, someplace, sometime!!! See what happens when one is Polish and gets old!!!

Have you heard that they can give the chips a virus? Yeah, it's true.

No we don't have one, and the time for it has probably passed. Coyo sticks pretty close now.

I would think the problems would have more to do with standards and protocols, rather then language. Chip readers, in Europe may be based on different standards. Funny enough, they are sometimes referred to as "languages".

hi there, its true that the pups have to be chipped again, since most readers cant read the amerikan chip, only vets with very expensive readers can read the amerikan onces, wel not many have them, so we usually have the dogs been chipped again, to bad but nothing we can do about it
