Nickel Mining In Southwest Oregon

Recommended Posts

Kim has asked that we take a look at this mining that is near the ranch:

Right now is a critical time for the wild rivers of southwest Oregon!

The recently introduced Southwest Oregon Watershed and Salmon Protection Act would help protect the Smith River and Rough & Ready Creek in the Kalmiopsis region and Hunter Creek and Pistol River on the Oregon Coast from proposed large-scale industrial nickel mining.

You may have spoken out on this issue in the past, but we need you now to ask the Obama administration for maximum possible interim protection while Congress considers protection through legislation. With enough support from citizens (like you!), we can protect these wild rivers from repeated threats to develop strip mines.

The development of nickel strip mines would forever change some of the nation’s last best rivers in the Kalmiopsis Rivers Country. Pristine watersheds would be turned into industrial zones of strip mines, haul roads and nickel processing facilities.

Protect world-class rivers, a national wild land treasure.

The Kalmiopsis Rivers are known for their clear emerald waters and provide outstanding opportunities for whitewater boating, swimming, hiking and fishing. The rich serpentine soils in this area host the highest concentration of rare plants in Oregon, and Hunter Creek and the North Fork Pistol River are two cherished native salmon and steelhead streams on the Wild Rivers Coast.

Why do they have to tear apart the land ugh....breaks my heart what they do to it! Would love to go back to they old ways, but I like some of the technology that we have today...like computers and the Forum!!! It's nice to be able to be in contact with all the great people who have AIdogs!!! Thanks Allison for bringing this to our attention...

Just copied and pasted this to an email to send out to friends and family that love to fish the pristine rivers. Hope you all do the same. Every little bit helps. Thanks.

Best of luck with shutting down the nickel mine! There is (was) a pristine water shed in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The Yellow Dog River flows into Lake Superior there, and there (WAS) a sacred First Naton site there. The Sierra Club got involved as well as many other conservation organizations. Charlotte Loonsfoot chained herself to the gates of the fence put up by the mining company, and still, Rio Tinto (nice name, Huh?) at first hiding behind a front name, still won out and now there is a SULFIDE mining operation there mining copper & nickel. If you could only see this place and walk the woods and the shores, you'd be as heartsick as I and many others are. One day we will all realize that you can't eat (or drink) money. Sadly it's the corporates at the top of the money pyramid that will get that message last.
