Does Your Dog Shed...best Dog Brush In The World

Recommended Posts

Ok so Shelby is my 1st dog since I was maybe 9yrs old and owned a husky who sheds almost as bad. Thank God we got the new hardwood floors it has made sweeping up the hair easier. It would have been unbearable on the carpets.

However I was sweeping everyday HUGE piles of fur I mean I was sweeping up a Lhasa Apso's worth of dog everyday. I went to petsmart and was looking at brushes and picked 3 affordable ones and walked up to the grooming station and held them up to the glass and the groomer looked and shook her head no. Then she held up a brush/comb. So I went and looked for it on the rack. FIFTY BUCKS!?!?!?! no flippin way I said to myself (out loud actually). There was no way I was going to buy a $50 dog brush and no way I could convince my wife even if I wanted to buy it.

So weeks passed and now our lhaso apso piles were turning into saint bernards. Brooke was flippin out and we were sweeping holes into our new wood floors. Bwahahaha. So we watched a few demos of the deshedding tool and decided to go get one.

WOW amazing how well it works

and as I was writing this wonderful review I noticed I could have bought the one I want online w/ free shipping for 26.99 instead of the 50 bucks I paid. So hopefully you all will learn from my pain.

I use a Furminator and like it. I bought the small one for $20. Amazon has them pretty cheap.

eBay is a good option if you're into bidding. I got a medium furminator for $20 with free shipping, though it took a few tries.

Don't know what a furminator is! Perhaps we don't have them over here. I use a fine looped wire brush which picks out the the fine hair beautifully, ( like a fine curry comb)freely available fairly cheaply, I also use a comb which has spring loaded tines, that deep grooms with real zeal, and takes up the stronger guard type hairs. Got that in a discount store years ago, and have never seen another, but is so good!

These work well on Holly too, she is a long haired Irish Lurcher. need something now she has moved in with us permanently with Steve Mike's brother!

Our AIDs shed all year!!!! I always have dust bunnies. If I was really, really good I could vacuum every day but we use the furminator like now when they're blowing their winter coats and in the fall when they blow the summer coat to get read for winter!! We swear by it. Got it through a television ad for $12. They work great. Just don't use a heavy hand when you groom with it - that could scratch their skin. Just my 2 cents!

Our non-AID has very sensitive skin - allegies make his skin very red sometimes, and I have to be gentle. And he's a horrible shedder, with an oily lab coat and a fine undercoat. I use a Kong Zoom Groom which I love. The rubber teeth grab everything all the way down without hurting him and it actually feels good, he loves being brushed. It's $6 on Amazon, you can get them at pet stores everywhere. Static keeps the hair on the brush.

Since spring is just around the corner (at least in some places) our AID's will be shedding even more. I found a really great/cheap product at WALMART. It's usually in the horse products section and is called a Jelly Scrubber. The two sides have different lengthes of Jellies and are really soft. It slips right onto your hand and is easy enough for a child to use. The dog thinks they are being pet and you have gobs of loose coat when they walk away/or you just get tired of petting. Mine cost $3.97. Combined with the furminator, this will go a long way to keep the 'fur from flying'. The distributer is Tail Tamer Products (www.tail-tamer.com) from Stillwater,MN. Unfortunately it is manufactured in China. Good brushing to all. Ma'ii and our family are headed for Mexico for a few weeks of sun and ocean.

Our old Lab shed and shed..brushing him twice a day helped, but then we bought the Furminator. Not only did it work great but our dog would freak out if I even placed a finger on it. He loved it when I brushed him with it - i swear sometimes he would start purring (well almost). But I do agree that you have to be careful when brushing as it could scratch the skin pretty easliy.

Since spring is on the way I thought id ask now.. do any other AIDs hate being brushed?? We haven't done a lot of it but every time i pull out the brush Zuni hides from me so I switched brushes to a gentler version with the same result he tolerates the brushing but afterwords acts like i just beat him with a stick. He hides behind the tables and keeps an eye on me ...i have never had i guy like this ...he hates nail trimming too any ideas????

For these dogs I'd look for a comfortable, gentle brush with a single row of teeth and blunt ends. Try it on your own arm to make sure it's not too sharp. Something sort of like this: https://www.amazon.com/Shedding-Anti-Static-Grooming-Stainless-Durable/dp/B01EKSFF7K/ref=sr_1_43?ie=UTF8&qid=1486300135&sr=8-43&keywords=dog+fur+rake This is also something similar to something we use that they like. https://www.amazon.com/Deshedding-Pet-Efficient-Deshedder-Dematting/dp/B01M1NN3M3/ref=sr_1_48?ie=UTF8&qid=1486300135&sr=8-48&keywords=dog+fur+rake

By way of comparison this is the rake we used on the german shepherd. It's very sharp and aggressive. https://www.amazon.com/FURminator-Long-Hair-deShedding-Large/dp/B0040QQ07C/ref=sr_1_29?ie=UTF8&qid=1486300100&sr=8-29&keywords=dog+fur+rake

Be forewarned that no brush is going to really get all that fur. Sometimes just using my fingers I can take out that errant tuft better than with any tool. Also when you brush during the fur season, more will loosen just from the process of brushing and you don't want to brush anyone red. Here is an older thread on the subject of blowing coat, which some dogs will do. http://www.iidoba.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3806&hl=blow&do=findComment&comment=36997

Here at SDK, I have several different grooming tools available to groom these dogs. There is not one grooming tool which fits every dog as each dog has its own needs and likes. I use a stiff brush, soft brush, flea comb, rakes, and shedding blades. Some dogs immediately take to the brushing / combing they receive. Some took time to warm up to the idea. Maybe even try a grooming glove to get him use to the grooming process. With a nervous or frightened dog, you can not rush the process. Time and consistency is key. How much time? It depends on the dog and how consistent you are. There are a couple of dogs here that took me several months to get them to stand still for grooming, but I also have to deal with other dogs trying to interrupt us wanting me to groom them too.

Nail trimming: I trimmed Tayamni's nails for 3 weeks in a row when I got her and then all of a sudden she hated it and became a wild coyote! So I took her to vet office for nail trims every week and it took 4 people at first including me giving treats (on a 14 week old pup!) then 3, then just the two of us: one clipper and me feeding treats. Then I was doing it at home and one time she twisted her paw while I was clipping and I nicked the quick. She didn't seem phased and I was still able to clip her nails regularly after that ... I took a beak when she got spayed because she had a rough time and had brought her into work while she was healing - she then decided she didn't like clicking noises and started squirming from the nail clippers...

Since then I go to Petco and she gets dremmeled and I use a bag of treats on her. She used to not like the smell and I started with really high value treats. She stands for the groomer while eating and nails can be dremmeled back pretty far so I don't have to go often.

I have a dremmel but don't want to try it and break the magic.....

Coffey is getting used to the dremmel - he used to have to be held by one person and dremmeled by another but he is now standing and eating treats.

i have a slicker brush that attaches to the end of my vacuum cleaner (it was meant for my vacuum cleaner... Dyson ...). Started using it on Nakoma since we got him. I love it. But I use it weekly/bi weekly. The rear/under tail area have always been where the bulk of the fur is on all my dogs, it seems.... The frequency really seems to do the trick, without fur flying all over the place. ....
