Introducing Anoki

Recommended Posts

Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to introduce Anoki. Anoki is from the Peyote and Rowdy litter. He is a such a character and deliberately sets out to get noticed every minute of the day. Kim refers to him as a firecracker. I think he just likes the attention and likes putting on a show.

At five to six weeks of age, Anoki literally would climb the chain link fence in the kennel just to get my attention as I was nearby. He would get about two feet of the ground and begin yelping. Kim once told me that if a puppy gets himself into a situation in which he feels he is stuck, wait and allow the puppy to figure it out for himself. Anoki would remain there on the fence until he in fact figured out how to get down on his own. Smart puppy.

One morning, shortly after Anoki started climbing the fence, Kim and I were talking near the kennel where Peyote's litter was. We were discussing the dogs when I noticed Anoki running across the grass toward us. He had wiggled his way out of the kennel just to get to us. It was at that moment that Kim and I decided that Anoki was the dog for me.

While watching Anoki grow up and observing his personality, I had developed a list of names a page and an half long. I just could not settle on a name. Three times I even gave up and said, "That's it. His name is..." A couple of weeks ago while discussing the AI Dogs with someone, I described my puppy's personality and described him as an actor. That got me thinking. In no time at all, I found a Native American name for an actor and the name was Anoki (ah-no-kee).

I finally brought Anoki home on September 20th. He is settling in and really enjoys the home as much as we do. Of course he will not be a stranger at Song Dog Kennel since he will be accompanying me when I go out there to help out.

Here are some pictures taken today out back.

Oh you got a great one Greg. Such a level, present, humorous gaze. I love animals with a sense of humor, and I can tell his is developed! What a blessing to be 'found' by your pup.

He's even 'dressed up' like an actor, so to speak! So happy for you

Yay! Congratulations Greg! These pups really know how to pick us, don't they (with a little help from Kim, of course)! Speaking with you at the Gathering, I know how you were soooo looking forward to this moment. Ayoki is one lucky pup :). Enjoy...

Greg,

Is Anoki the last puppy pic of Peyote x Rowdy 2014 first puppy pics?

(new pups, Peyote X Rowdy 2014)

The mask and the posture look the same and the one front lighter paw ...

If so, WOW the coloring has changed so much already!

Do you notice the changes being able to be with the dogs so often?

Denise

Yes Denise, the last picture in the post of Peyote X Rowdy 2014 is Anoki. I took those pictures around the time he was climbing the chain link fence. To answer your second question, yes I do see changes in these dogs, some more than others.

These dogs really do seem to change constantly. Some of the dogs are a light color and then all of a sudden they turn dark, or dark to light, causing me to take a closer look to confirm they are in fact the same dog. I know there have been a few times over the last six months I have asked Kim if he picked up a new dog because the change was so quick and drastic I didn't immediately recognize the dog.

Thank you Carolyn. I don't think Anoki minded the misspelling or mispronunciation either. He stills likes to be called pup-pup. That is what we call all the puppies at the ranch to get their attention.

  • 1 month later...

Hello all. I want to apologize that is has taken me a while to provide additional updates on Anoki. We have been busy with renovations to the home we just moved into in September. We are on the last project which is interior painting.

Carolyn contacted me today and asked for a few pictures of Anoki. I have some pictures taken after his 16 week check-up. Anoki weighted in at 24 pounds and Dr. Joe gave Anoki two thumbs up on his examination. He is definitely growing faster than I could have imagined.

The pictures again were taken a few weeks ago but I will get pictures of him this week at the 5 month mark. The second puppy in the first picture is Laya, Anoki's sister. Laya is Kim's granddaughter's puppy.

Thanks for the update! He still looks like he has very long legs he will grow into. Reminds me of a calves legs in the first photo! I like his mask. Striking!

Thank you Carolyn. I thought it was time for a headshot of Anoki so I could use it as my avatar. I have been taking updated pictures of Anoki at 5 months and will be posting some soon.

Hello everyone,

Here is Anoki's five month update. A visit to the Vet last week and he weighed in at 28.5 pounds.

Anoki is right in the middle of his teething phase. Anoki lost seven teeth last week, upper and lower canines and pre-molars. I have to keep him busy with training and toys to avoid chewing on me or other forbidden items. He definitely lets me know his gums are hurting when he completely ignores my, "no bite" command. At that point, I give him as many ice cubes as he wants and then we play with the knotted rope which seems to help. He actually lost four of his teeth while I let him tug on the rope.

Training is really beginning to pick up now. We go through a training session three times a day. First is before breakfast, second is about noon and the last is before dinner. Each session is approximately fifteen to twenty minutes each. Anoki is doing real well with sit, down, sit stay, down stay, come-sit and leave-it. Just last week I switched over to a slip collar since he would pull with a flat collar on. A couple times of him trying to pull while the slip collar was on and he would check himself and stop pulling. I really like the slip collar over the choke collar or the pinch collar.

Here are some five month photographs of Anoki. The last photographs are of Anoki practicing the "leave-it" command. We finish training with a "leave-it" command at his food bowl. He will stay at his food bowl and stare at the food until I release him.

Handsome and looks like he has a ways to go to grow into those legs and ears - a big boy. I like that the cross on his mask has stayed strong. How do people react to him? He doesn't really look like anything else unless you know about AIDs it seems to me.
