White Seneca Deer

Recommended Posts

Did you know that since 1949 there have been white deer growing into a herd of maybe as many as 300 in Seneca NY? These deer lived on an Army Depot and were protected. Unfortunately the depot is now closed and the future uncertain for these animals. Take a look and if you feel so moved, kindly write a letter or lend support to the White Deer. I wrote letters indicating that I would be happy to spend my tourism dollars at a nature preserve featuring the white deer. As a lover of historically important animals I hope you will too.

Thanks for the enlightenment Sherab.......I have NEVER seen a white deer...they are beautiful. I hope the hunters out there won't see them as unusual trophy's. Here is more information of the possible future of the Seneca White Deer........ http://www.syracuse.com/outdoors/index.ssf/2014/06/is_the_white_deer_herd_at_the_seneca_army_depot_doomed.html

Good to hear from you Miz M. That article is from 2014 but certainly it is a possible future. If you click on the link in my post there is a section on what you can do to help. I wrote letters to the politicians on their list. There is a couple that own a winery that are offering up to $200,000 matching funds for donations through Jan 31 2016. There is also a letter indicating some want a casino on the land - so original (NOT). The future is not set and there is still hope. Maybe the white buffalo people can send letters too?

In my letter I indicated that the Finger Lakes have been on my vacation short list for 20 years but always some other place wins out. I wasn't aware of the white deer and if there was a recreational spot that preserved them for people to enjoy them I would definitely spend my tourist $ there. What causes the FL's to miss out on my tourist $ is a lack of anything singular and unique compared to other beautiful places and for me this would be a game changer.

"The Depot, now a quiet, tranquil place giving way to ecological succession, is celebrated for supporting the largest herd of white deer (a recessive form of white-tailed deer) in the world."

It's just like Blonde/Brown hair in humans. Brown is the dominate trait and thus shows up more often then Blonde. White fur in deer is an EXTREMELY recessive trait in deer because it makes the deer easier to be spotted by predators. Natural Selection has played a large part in keeping the numbers of the white deer low. Because they are not a different species of deer, most states have come to the conclusion that there no valid reason to protect them.

Confused .....

Key deer are actually white tail deer that have gotten smaller due to habitat from what I've been told. I don't know if they are now a subspecies.

I read this is a whole herd of white deer. My leap with that was it may be considered for protection akin to the Key Deer.

If it is not a whole herd of white deer, or if it is .... is it not enough genetic variables causing the recessive to become dominant?

Are these deer healthy? I can see they are not albinos.

My hair looks brown but my hairdresser says it's ash blonde ..... I'm still trying to figure that one out! LOL!

Key deer are actually an endangered sub-species of White-tailed deer. It is illegal to hunt them.

I've done a lot of research on White/Albino deer (but by no means am I an expert), but I haven't seen anywhere that a white deer naturally occurs and is a dominate trait. From what I'm reading, the herd of white deer is an extremely unlikely abnormality within a herd of animals. No they are not sick, it's more comparable to a town of most/all blonde haired people. It's strange, unusual and extremely unlikely but that's about it. They are the same as any other herd of deer, the main difference is that these are white.

Also, take a look at the white squirrels of Brevard College. http://www.brevardnc.org/white-squirrels/

"Apparently, Brevard’s white squirrels originated from a carnival animal truck. According to Brevard resident Mrs. W.E. Mull, a pair of white squirrels was given to her brother-in-law, H.H. Mull, by Mr. Black of Madison, Florida, in 1949.

A carnival truck had overturned near Black’s home and the squirrels were caught by Mr. Black when he observed them playing in his pecan grove.

Mull gave the critters to his niece, Barbara, who unsuccessfully tried to breed them. In 1951 she married and left home. Eventually, one of the white squirrels escaped and Mr. Mull soon let the other one go. Before long, the squirrels began breeding in the wild and appeared in several areas of town."

I have to look more carefully if I ever get back up there to Brevard County.

I couldn't access your link so googled a page and it went into genetics for color variations.

Reminded me of how Bengal Cat breeders obtain different coat colors.

Thanks for the info.

I'm kinda surprised the hawks didn't take out the population. I would think these white squirrels in Florida would be easier prey for them.
