Hey all- You can imagine the rarified gene pool of squirrels that Live IN the Dog Park

Well, this last Saturday, Jas and K'ne were having fun stalking those pesky squirrels.

It was cold, breezy, and a bit damp

There were- maybe half a dozen other owners with their dogs there as well.

I am at the 'bottom' of the loop, and the kids are half way up the East side.. when.. suddenly.

There was RUNNING.

Then much excitement.

They CAUGHT one.

They pounced on it, and tossed it back and forth between them, grabbing it and pinning it with their feet..

Then the poor human spectators noticed.. - the collective gasp and horrified utterances

"Oh No, that poor squirrel. Those horrible dogs are Torturing it!"

I really couldn't help but laugh. (and actually I was quite proud of my dogs.. truth be told.)

All you silly people- your dogs chase the squirrels too.. Why do you think they chase ?

Just because my guys are fast enough and smart enough to Actually CATCH one..

That makes it horrible?

I figure they were weeding the slow/stupid squirrel out of the gene pool.

I continue calmly walking towards my dogs.. who, as I approach, graciously offer the squirrel to me.

I agree with them that this IS the Coolest Thing EVER! And let the poor creature slowly drag itself laboriously back up the nearest tree..

Normally I would have put it out of it's misery, but I really think stomping it on the squirrel's head- with all those spectators- might have been too much for them. LOL

And the place cleared out within minutes- No one else stayed…

Guess the spectacle was just too much for them.. Those horrible dogs being Dogs.. ew.

And no- my guys didn't have a scratch on them. :)

Hey, I think our town is getting overrun by squirrels. Come help! Hawk just loves the thrill of the chase.

Congrats to the GREAT HUNTERS! Totally awesome. Even though it's hard for me to see a hurt animal, I figure this as the natural culling process. Way to go boys. ;)

They are still hopeful- when we go to that park.. and they graciously accept all compliments (even though one is a girl.. lol)

I don't like to see animals hurt either, but - as I said, they were removing the slow/stupid squirrel from the resident gene pool. And it was a wonderful learning experience for them. Working as a flawless team, reading each other instantly, adapting on the fly, and proving to themselves that patience and observation skills are both highly valuable. :)

I wondered if they "teamed" up for that hunt!

Great story. I bet the spectators were not as offended as they would of been if you had Pitt Bulls. ;)

It's like you say "All you silly people- your dogs chase the squirrels too."

And your pups handed you the prize....so disciplined.

Love the story and the responses  on the forum
