Well...Kaposia just proved more than worth her weight in gold! She asked to be let out, and it was about time for her last evening "trot." I opened the door and instead of her usual cautious sniff the air and step out gently, she took out like a hound from Hades. I thought, "Oh no, if it's a skunk we're in for some fun tonight!" By the time I reached mid back yard I saw her chase a HUMAN intruder over the back fence! She kept jumping and barking at the corner where he went over, I yelled, "Good dog...you tell 'em!" Then tried to call her in. She'd have none of it....she wanted a piece of the guy. By the time I ran back and alerted Denny and we peered through the bushes into the neighbors yard, there was nobody in sight. She finally came back to the house, but it took both of us to bring her in on the leash. Needless to say...lots of hugs and praise, and a special treat. Scary though....don't want her getting hurt either!

It's been a rough beginning to 2017. Denny has been down for almost 5 weeks with respiratory influenza, but is finally on the mend. We had our bat encounter and rabies treatment, (Denny finally agreed to take the series of shots after we consulted an infectious disease M.D., you can easily be bitten, especially in your sleep and never know it.) Although the rabies protocol is far easier than it used to be, it is still no fun, and the serum and immune globulin can make you feel quite ill for a long time after. ...been thinking about the whole bat scenario and how Kaposia played into it. Bats in the house and sliding ice dams from the roof, dog goes crazy raising the alarm all night long, finding tiny fang marks in my hand 3 days later...1+1+1=3. If it weren't for Kaposia raising "heck" that night, I don't know if I'd have put it all together when I saw those two very tiny holes in my skin. (I later found a second bite on my hand and one on Kaposia's belly.) Called the vet, who said the dog would be fine...just had her 3 year rabies in July. Guard dog indeed!!!

Glad you are completed with the course of shots.

There is a vaccination you can get - a lot simple than waiting until after you get bit by potentially rabid animals (if you go places regularly that you could be bit and not have the animal to test).

After the vaccination (I think it's two or three shots) then if you get bit by something questionable it's only a booster after that. I don't know if you need to get boosters every so often, though.

At least that is what my Doc told me. He has had the pre-rabies vaccination because he used to rescue feral dogs.

Immunoglobulins, yeah fun stuff!

I get bites of different sizes similar to that a lot (in the house, around the yard and when camping) it seems to be from different spiders though. They REALLY like me!

We had bats in our yard until the lot next door got cut down but I never slept outside at my house.

It's definitely something to remember!
