This may not be the best place to post this but I MUST. This past Saturday my neighbor called and said 2 dogs have come into her yard and she needed help. The dogs 1 male and 1 female were such sweet dogs. One had a collar, no tags on either one. We looked and drove a 3 mile radius, going to doors asking people on the street if they recognized these 2 dogs. i took a picture of them on my cell phone. No one knew of these dogs. We called the ASPCA to find out what we could do. I am not in a position to keep the dogs, having 6 cats, a Florida Panther, a Walleby that lives in the house and my precious Quodi. Beth decided to take them to the ASPCA in Sanford, Fl. Let me preface this, that for years i have given money to tha ASPCA. NEVER AGAIN!!!

We took the dogs, thinking they would have a safe haven WRONG, the dogs were taken the next day to Animal control. Here in Florida Pit bull mix have a bad rap, as I write this they are probably gone. Of course, we were not informed about this until the dogs were in their cages. They did not let the dogs be together even though it was obvious they had grown up together. I get the rules, they will bond with each other making it so called difficult for the volunteers, but they would not even put them in cages next to each other. When I asked why the guy "Lady if you don't like it take them back" it took everything i had not to knock his head off! Of course I did get upset with out causing bodily harm, to the point I started crying, not good when that happens, I'm dangerous. I can't get those 2 dogs off my mind. The point to this? The ASPCP does not do what it says in all their commercials. They only take in dogs that are left by the owner. Strays or lost dogs don't matter to them. I called the ASPCP today to cancel my membership. And I hope God will forgive me for being a part of taking those dogs there. I told my neighbor don't EVER ask me to do that again. Anyone who knows me, know that I am a freak when it comes to animals. Like Kim says I get to attached, and for me it only takes a matter of minutes. I know we can not save them all, but to be a part of the opposite of what i believe in is driving me crazy and very sad. So for those of you that think that the ASPCA does everything they say they do, think again. My money will now only go to no kill shelters. Of course, that's what I thought The ASPCA was. The person there on Saturday had no compassion, and to think i have helped with his paycheck makes me sick.. I have also called their headquarters on this matter. The moral to this story is this, make sure your pets have id if lost, have them micro chipped is $30.00. most importantly, if there is any way you can takes the lost in until you can find it a home, or take it to your vet to see if it is micro chipped, please do that, don't make the horrible mistake I made.

I think a lot of people share your concerns. I've been living in a rural area of California where people have been known to drop dogs off as strays. It happened just last week, and we could not figure out what to do. We didn't want to call the ASPCA because these dogs would have likely been put down, even though one appeared to be very sweet. We could not take them in either, Cassie has unfortunately become aggressive toward most other dogs. Eventually the two dogs headed up the road, we haven't seen them since. While I am upset at the people for dropping them off, I can understand they may have hoped someone here would take the dogs in, sparing them euthanasia at the ASPCA. It's too bad there aren't more no-kill shelters, and I'm sure the few around are overwhelmed.

I do have some good news, one of the dogs was reclamined by its owner. Of course the female is still there. i would have bet my life those dogs were raised together. The amimal control here does try to adopt the animals, anwered all my questions. They also offer the mico chip for $5.00. The owners do have to pay a fine to get their animal back. Now my delimma is whether I should go get the female and find her a good home. However, I am still not done with the ASPCA!!!!

I'm happy to hear that the one dog has found a home, and the other is still in a shelter waiting for one. Short of finding a home for the dogs yourself, that's as happy an outcome as you could hope for!

I don't know what commercials you've been seeing, but it does not say anywhere on the ASPCA web site that they operate no-kill shelters, although they have a link with information about organizations that do.

I went back and forth for a long time about whether or not to get an Indian Dog because of all of the euthanized dogs in our country. I'd vowed to not buy a dog, and then I went and did it anyway. I am a hypocrite, I don't feel good about it. I haven't yet made a big donation to our local no-kill shelter, but I am going to. Not that that makes me less of a hypocrite, but I've been donating to other things instead.

Karen I understand what you mean about buying a dog verses rescuing one. It really is a tough call. I used to work at the county pound when I was a teenager. Just seems that no matter what you do or how often you try and educate folks there are more and more animals being tossed aside like last years christmas presents. There should be a basic law set on the books for owning animals of any sort to require a license (well for that matter I think parenting should require a license too Bwahahaha ) At least w/ the AIDog there is a comfort in knowing that in purchasing a dog it isn't really promoting a business but saving a bloodline from extinction.

Right you are, and the same with us. I went to many pounds and looked at many litters of dogs--Akitas were my chosen dog before I found Kim and his AIDogs. But it was clear the dog for me and for us, was the American Indian Dog, and the Breeder was Kim.

The AIDog had the primitive lines, the pack mentality, and was an intelligent animal. I did not wait 40 years to have a stupid dog! That was my one fear! All these dogs are as nature intended--smart and able to fulfill their niche.

The only question is: are you human enough to handle such a dog?

I haven't looked at their web site, but I have been watching their commercials for years, and their message is to save abandoned animals. When I decided to get a dog, I did go on line for shelter dogs and saw the American Indian Dog site. Being Indian myself, I felt I have to have one of these dogs. They are a part of my heritage that has long since pasted. ALL of my other animals are recue. I too, recommend to go to shelters to adopt. However, I do not feel I'm being a hypocrite and I am sadden you feel bad about it. We all give to what we feel is deserving of those doing the right thing. I am not telling anyone to give to shelters or not to give, that is a personal choice. There are people out there making a lot of money by claiming to be what they not, so it is up to us to educate ourselves on those charites. I do give money to animal facilites, not out of quilt but from my heart, to help save the ones I cannot. I never thought I would take any animal to a shelter, but I did, NOW THAT makes you feel guilty. I have made trips to animal control to see the girl. I do know if she doesn't find a home soon, I will. All I ask of anyone who adopts an animal or buys an animal, love them, give them the home and vet care they need. Be responsible for their well being as if you have given birth to them. The only time my heart was broken by an animal was when he had to leave this world. All people are different with animals, some only love their own, some love them all. I happen to be the one who loves them all. But that, is how I was raised. We were taught to love and respect all of God's creatures. With that being said, don't feel bad, your dog will feel that, and I'm sure that is not what you want for you or your dog. We can't save them all but we can try. This is also in loving memory of Honey the bear I have been training for the past year, she broke her hip and leg in 4 places in an accident. She will be truly missed by all that loved and worked with her.
