DarmokElizabethontheocean 199
Darmok is a little bit older than 6 months now and his testicles have not descended yet. The vet says that more than likely they won't descend. She wants to neuter him and go into his abdomen to locate his testicles. Has anyone had this issue with their American Indian dog? The vet is saying that dogs whose testicles do not descend have a higher risk of cancer and she recommends neutering him sooner rather than later.
Sherab 2,337
Oh dear. I have not read a thread on that in my time on the forum (6 years). If you feel your vet is excellent then go for it. I'm not sure where Kent is but here in my smallish town our vet does some procedures and refers us to specialists in Anne Arbor for other things. I am not sure how complicated that procedure is. Might be worth a google search or two. Google autofilled undescended Testicles in Dogs for me from just the first 2 words. Here are two articles right off the top. http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/reproductive/c_multi_cryptorchidism# https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/retained-testicle-cryptorchidism-in-dogs Good luck. DarmokElizabethontheocean 199
I've already read numerous articles. I'm looking for information about this issue in other AI dogs.
KittynDoc 968
Just like in humans, dogs mature at different times. I myself would wait a bit and see if anything changes. Six months is still young. I've read that you should really wait until almost a year. Major surgery is always a risk, and then scar tissue will form which will then affect digestion and many other things. Try looking up and reading about Holistic healing/rearing. Hope you find resolution for your concern soon.
Samie 175
Have you called Kim yet? Kim usually likes to hear (from what I've read anyway) about any physical issues with his dogs. That way he can review the breeding and determine if the parents are a potentially bad match.
Allison 2,369
Yes. Call Kim. Or email him. He will respond.
DarmokElizabethontheocean 199
Sigh...I'm fully aware that I can call Kim and intend to do so. My question to this forum is: Has anyone had this issue with their American Indian dog?
woodrat 399
I've been reading this forum for almost 7 years and have read through many of the old posts from even before then, and I don't recall ever seeing mention of undescended testicles. I would venture to say it's not a common issue, though perhaps Kim would be the only one who can confirm that with any real certainty. There are countless dogs that are sent to new homes who never do make it online to this forum.
DarmokElizabethontheocean 199
I also didn't find anything in past posts when I was doing my initial research. I'll post more information after I hear back from Kim.
DarmokElizabethontheocean 199
I heard back from Kim and he said that he has not heard of this happening to other AI dogs. Darmok will be going back to the vet in a couple a weeks and I'll speak to her more about this then.
KittynDoc 968
Sorry you are worried about this....I do believe, however, like I've mentioned before, time will tell. All dogs are different, as are humans, and developement sometimes happens later in some, while others start earlier. I hope this happens for Darmok, as it would be a painful thing for him to have to go through this exploratory and removal surgery. Good luck....
