Hi Everybody. Our AI dog is awesome and stinky. We've fed her 2 types of dry food now, Live Free and now Nature's Logic. Both grain free and all natural ingredients, etc. Problem is her stinky gas, it's killing me. We'll probable go raw or 1/2 raw but I'm wondering if you have found any foods that don't cause gas? Thank you

Megan

Sounds like you need to develop some good gut bacteria. Has your pup been on anti biotic?

Consider adding multiple different sources of good bugs such as plain goat and grass fed cow yogurt, kifur ( a table spoon into the food will do) and probiotic pills (the"pearls"go down very easy). Raw is good but if your dog has been on kibble for life, a gradual switch is best. Are you feeding crackers or other snacks? Could be those. Gas is not unusual when the diet changes radically - if your pup is self feeding on critters or ehem, cat treats (or even cat food) for example. Consistency in types of foods and a good program for building and maintaining a healthy gut are best. You should be seeing consistent timing (regularity), shape and consistent consistency, and predictable color - for example if they have had beef or "wild game" it will be dark. If you see white rice like specs pause and make sure these are not worms.

I also give them one square of Sushi Nori sea weed (Emerald Cove) daily. I think it helps with many things, including preventing "grazing"on plants in an attempt to self medicate (which either comes back as late night vomit or causes great excitement and adventure when a long blade gets stuck in the bum and the poo won't drop to the ground - try chasing THAT around so we ALL love the sea weed). http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/sea-vegetables-and-their-health-benefits-for-dogs/

Good luck and crack your windows open for a little while.

We started with Blue Buffalo. That seemed to cause more gas rather than less. We seem to have better luck currently with Iams (not no gas, but less). My previous AID eventually had AMAZING results with Royal Canin (can be found at some stores like Petco or Petsmart but we got ours from our vet.) He had a sensitive tummy and our vet recommended we move him to this. He was like a new dog! So much energy! He had previously been somewhat lethargic. He enjoyed the second half of his life on this food, and it was a miracle for us.

Puppy gas is horrendous!

Especially because most of Tayamni's were silent and deadly!!!!!!!

She had a sensitive stomach as a pup and she is finally growing out of her issues (@ 10 months). Well, she has not had gas issues in a while ....

I had to finally put her on a combination of foods and probiotics and ADD boiled sweet potatoes to her meals to keep her stool firm for the longest time.

She NEVER tested positive for worms - but did have some nasty bacteria in her gut (causing issues) and had to have a course of antibiotics which then took a couple of months to bring it back to balance. Used goats milk and kefir also. GREAT STUFF!

It seems that PUPPY GAS is common - search different terms for it and there will be posts - I guess that's where the term "little stinker" came from?

Sherab has some very good suggestions. :)

I give my pup Nature's Variety Instinct Raw... the dry kibble for breakfast and lunch (without the raw "boost"), and 1.5 frozen medallions for dinner (these medallions make it so I don't need the "raw boost in the dry kibble). He has never had a gas or poop problem (other than when getting rid of the round worms two months ago) and his coat is so shiny and he is so full of energy (but he is only 4.5 months). It seems to work for him. He's also the first dog I've ever had that does not have bad breath. He does fart though if I wait too long before walking him... so a fart currently translates into "I have to poop, now." (Just sayin').

Your dog's gas may also come from his treats (possibly). I used to have a dog that would have some realllly bad gas... turns out it was the treats. So with this guy, I either give him my apples, carrots, actual pieces of his dry kibble, or the raw salmon sticks as treats... so far, the air has been fresh.

Good luck!

the easiest solution we have found- and it makes sense if you think about it- is put the kibble in the bowl, and add half that of water. Let it sit for a few minutes to start soaking up. How would your innards react if you ate a portion of DryKibble that was almost half the size of your head? Your stomach would become irritated and thusly your bowels. For us it was an almost instant solution. (pun intended)

  • 6 months later...

Nanuke has had a major switch in food since we got him. We gradually switched him from goat milk to standard puppy food that was given to us. Since that was running low, we wanted to switch him to some food that we've had success with in the past. Core Wellness Grain Free puppy food. Since we switched him to this food, his farts has been minimal and his stool has gone back to normal. I'd recommend that food over most of the other ones.

I second this. Have been feeding all my dogs Core Wellness for the last few years with great results in health and appearance. I am feeding the puppy formula to my AI pup now.

I have been feeding Taste of the Wild - High Prairie Puppy Formula and that has worked out well.

It got stinky when we introduced bully sticks and cow toes.
