Waiting List For The 2017 Summer Puppies

Recommended Posts

Kim has authorized me to make the following post.

We have made great progress over the last few years catching up on the waiting list and keeping it at a manageable number where those on the list do not have to wait as long as they use to. As we have posted before, Kim plans his breeding on the number of people on the waiting list. We cannot program the mothers as to how many puppies they are allowed to have. Litter sizes can be as few as one (1) and I have seen some litters as large as eleven (11).

As most of you probably know by now, we currently have five (5) litters of puppies. During this breeding period, we had slightly larger than average size litters.

There are people on the list who, due to one reason or another, have been on the list for an extended period of time while there are also some people very new to the waiting list. Kim already knows there are some currently on the waiting list who will not be ready for their puppy at this time while some of the new people on the waiting list will be able to receive a puppy from one of these litters.

These puppies will be ready to go to their new owners during the second half of September. These litters are new lines so Kim is considering keeping a few pups as future breeders, but he does want to ensure people on the list get their puppy. For those thinking about getting on the waiting list but not sure about how long the wait may be, now would be a good time. It is very possible that Kim will not be planning a Fall and/or a Winter breeding.

Contact Kim if you are interested in getting on the waiting list, and possibly receive one of the puppies from the current litters. Also, a reminder for those on the waiting list to contact Kim if your contact information has changed.

After reviewing the waiting list this morning, Kim and I would like to narrow down the time frame for the puppies being able to go to their new homes. We will be able to begin sending puppies out to their new homes as early as the week of 4th of September. Most who are on the waiting list for these pups do not live in the western United States. These puppies will be shipped by air cargo unless a new owner is able to fly out and pick up their puppy and return with their puppy as carry-on. Maybe some might even consider a road trip to visit Song Dog Kennels and pick up your puppy.

The process to fly with a puppy may sound difficult but, from my understanding, it is not too bad. There are some in the past who have made this trip to pick up their puppy. Felix has posted her experience in traveling with her pup Chepi as carry-on. Check out her post her to get an idea of what her experience was like:

http://www.iidoba.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3863&hl=chepi

Currently, there are two people who will be flying out to pick up their new puppy. This is the second puppy for each person and the second time they will return with their puppy as carry-on. We are asking that anyone currently on the waiting list who is willing to fly out to pick up their puppy, please let us know as soon as you can.

Remember that weather conditions do not affect a puppy traveling as carry-on but it can affect a puppy being shipped as cargo. We will ship but please understand we can usually ship no more than two puppies a day and connecting flights must have room in cargo for puppy kennels. Also we may have to deal with weather holds.

We understand that flying is not an option for everyone, but this is just an idea to try and make this process simple for everyone involved.

I had no issues flying with Chepi, and honestly most people are very accommodating to a little tiny pup. I made sure to bring pee pads, age appropriate toys just in case, and a portable water/food feeder from Amazon.

if it is a long distance I think it is nice to have a decent layover to make sure you can let them roam a bit and see if they will go potty. If I could change anything about the experience a small pop-up kennel would be great to make sure they don't pee on the airport carpet hahahaha bu I'm sure they've seen worse at the airport!

Feel free to shoot me a message if anyone has any questions about it

Sorry! not sure what happened with that post before, but we will not be able to fly out :( but we are definitely ready for a pup the week of the 4th! So excited! :D Will we receive a pic of our selected pup beforehand so we can pick the names and such? We are first-timers so we aren't entirely sure how this process works from here. Any info greatly appreciated!

I live in South Florida and both pups were air cargoed to Ft Lauderdale no problems.

Good luck! Hope you get "the call".

Our first pup - I didn't get a picture so I was totally surprised at the airport - LOL!

and our second pup, we did get a pic before the pup was shipped.

It may depend on how busy and what else is going on at SDK.

Verify the registration application paperwork notes the correct color/sex of pup - once in a while it gets mixed up.

No biggie, you'll have the right pup - the paperwork will just need to be sent back, corrected and resent to you.

Just think, when you pick up your pup at the airport it's like the stork just brought your baby!!!!!!!!!

(you might want to bring a couple size collars, leash, some water, pee pads, and gentle baby wipes ... etc. if it was a long trip)

I only say that about the collar size because Tayamni was 9 lbs and Coffey 5.5 lbs. You can't believe the difference in size!

Congrats to all the new parents!!!!!!

When I do this again I think I will have my next pup shipped. Tamarack was shipped to Boston without issue, and several years later I flew to SDK to pick up Rune and brought him back as carry on and the experience was a nightmare I hope to never repeat.

While I absolutely loved visiting SDK and experiencing the dogs and would like to do that part again, it was SO stressful trying to make it through the airport and plane ride with a puppy that wouldn't. stop. screaming. Also worth noting that when you carry a pup on a plane they don't check for what shots they've had.. so Rune had had absolutely nothing. No 1st distemper or anything. I was so paranoid to put him down to pee anywhere because we were in a busy airport with who knows how many other puppies that had been passing through, and of course all he wanted to go was get down and walk so he screamed this high pitched blood-curdling scream the ENTIRE time. I spent the whole waiting period at the airport pacing the hallways with him screaming on my shoulder and acquiring many a strange look from passersby. And in the plane he screamed and screamed and I had to put my hand in the carrier to shush him to spare the other passengers, which of course taught him that screaming gets me to comfort him and probably helped destroy his ability to be crate trained. I do think the whole ordeal started our relationship off on the wrong foot entirely.

Whereas if they are shipped, it's required by law that they are over 8 weeks of age, and thus have had their first round of puppy shots. They are in a carrier the whole time and if they're screaming it's only going to bother any other dogs around and some employees for a short spell, and the only lesson they'll accumulate is that screaming gets them nothing. I imagine it's much less stressful for the pup as well, because being in a carrier the entire time they're not being exposed to way more stimulation and change of environment than a puppy of such a young age would normally experience in a single day.

Just my two cents!

I had Willow shipped to me in Florida. She was perfectly fine when I picked her up, after a quick potty break. We then drove 4 hours to Auburn (which ended up being longer because we got into an accident). Willow did extremely well the entire time.

I will say that I think this is also part of why chepi whines in the car.

I constantly felt like I had to shush or comfort her on the plane, but I will say my experience as a little bit better than yours when it comes to other people in the airport.

I agree with what you've said honestly, and I've had the same thoughts. We are going to have the pup shipped this time it looks like.

I have never had the experience of traveling on a plane with the pup..reading your experience made me feel stressed!! Poor you, poor puppy, and poor people on the plane...

We picked up Wyot at the airport, and it seemed like a REALLY long time after the plane landed. We waited almost 2 hours...watched other people get their puppies., oohed and ah-ed of course, but most of the pups came out woozy and disoriented (understandably)...Finally, our little crate, with our fuzzball came...and as we lifted him out, it was instant love! He was alert, looking around, felt safe in our arms and didn't shake like most of the puppies we had seen. I took him outside, thinking he'd do his business, but, concrete was probably a foreign thing to him.

In the car we went, with me at the ready with a chew stick. He loved it, and chewed it and nuzzled, and exercised his razor sharp little teeth on my finger, which I kept redirecting. He finally went potty when we stopped an hour later on a grassy patch at a rest stop! First night in the crate, he cried and whined...I waited 10 mins, came down, and made sure he knew we were still here, and that was his space. He finally fell asleep, and a few hours later, he cried, and I took him out, where he did his business.. The second night, he cried just once, and slept through the night!! From then on, he was fine..he cranked a minute or two, and then would settle.

All in all, interesting observations about picking up and traveling vs crating and sending a pup in cargo...

My Kai was shipped and showed no signs of distress or fear. I think puppies just go into shutdown mode in a situation like that. He was tired of course but immediately acclimated when we got him home. We drove to Song Dog to pick up our Jesse and it was one of the most memorable weekends of my life. I did have to be very careful when we stopped for potty breaks because he was not fully vaccinated. One of my clients is moving to Hawaii and plans on bringing his dog in the plane cabin with him, I can't imagine doing that... stressful for all involved, especially his dog.

Nakoma was shipped to me in NY at JFK airport. For him it was a 13 hour travel day that included three planes. Aside from being exhausted after such a long (and probably frightening day), he really was ok. And it was pure love at first sight. When the time comes for me to get Nakoma a sibling, we will either drive back and forth (make it a two week vacation) or I will have him/her shipped. But I wouldn't want to fly with a puppy as a carry-on. Screaming babies annoy me as it is. A screaming puppy? I'd feel awful for everyone else who has to listen to that.

Just before I got my first pup (fall of 2014) - there was a woman in Texas that flew to SDK and picked up her pup.

The pup was named Moonfire (Moonfire's Embers). TEX is the woman's username but I can't find the flying checklist she posted.

I remember she used some herbal calming meds, safe for puppy, and had a great plane trip including layovers.

She brought water and puppy treats, puppy toy, and pee pads, collar, leash with the pup in a little pup travel bag.

The puppy slept mostly during the flights.

Puppies (any breed) that young don't have all their shots yet. It is wise to be careful where you try to walk the puppy.

I think the pee pad idea is good when flying with a pup and layovers.

I haven't heard of anyone's puppy getting sick while flying home when people flew to pick them up at SDK.

Flying is too expensive for me from Florida to Oregon last minute. My vaca time is used for traveling to Native summer ceremony.

Otherwise I would travel to the gatherings if I could and I would LOVE to travel to SDK and pickup a pup.

I would love to travel with our two AI Dogs and go to SDK and bring another home.

I don't have an RV or trailer so it is all hotel stays and I would have to pray that pup doesn't catch anything during hotel room stays all the way home.

Someday I want a little pull trailer and a vehicle that can pull it!!!!!!

The third dog will probably come first .... LOL!

Just something I remembered, I don't want to cause anyone to choose pup shipped if it works for them to go to SDK and pick one up!

I haven't heard of anyone being disappointed going to SDK and meeting Kim, Greg and the packs!!!!!!!!!!

We had an excellent experience flying with Kito. He travelled great in his carrier and slept the whole time, such an angel. Mommy on the other hand, was a wreck. :)

I hope I didn't sound like taking a pup on the plane was a bad idea, I too would carry my pup on. I just mentioned my client taking his active, largish small, adult dog in the cabin sounded like an unpleasant experience, especially on a 7+ hour flight!

I just picked my pup up in July and where able to drive from Portland to SDK as we attended a wedding in Portland. We drove north to Vancouver Canada where we took her as carry on onto the flight. She was so great the entire trip and with everyone in the airport wanting to say hi to here she passed out right when we were taking off. she slept the entire 1 hour and 40 min flight. if you are taking as carry on i suggest tiring them out with a walk prior to getting into the airport as relief stations may be scarce.

please message me if you require more details

Thanks

We live on Vashon Island near Seattle so we obviously plan to drive on down to pick one up when it's ready!

Any tips on car rides with pups would also be appreciated ;-)

We held her for the first bit as she did not want to be on her own however we ended up having her in the back seat with a blanket down and her little crate open to go in and out of as she pleased. she usually slept half way in and out. Once she woke up and seemed a bit restless we pulled over to let her stretch out and go to the bathroom.

You don't have far to go and your pup will most likely just sleep. take your time with rest stops and you will be fine. (bring a towel or blanket as there nails are pretty sharp)

  • 2 weeks later...

I will post more information in a separate post real soon.

Kim has asked me to just make a quick post now to help get the word out. He has tried to contact a few on the waiting list and was unable to speak to anyone. So here it is.

For those on the waiting list, if you are ready now, send in your balance for your puppy. Please send the balance in a postal money order and use priority mail so you can track it. If you are needing your puppy shipped by air, please include an additional $100 for health certificate, shipping crate, and miscellaneous costs to get to the airport. This will NOT cover the cost to ship your puppy. More on that later.

Please ensure you include a valid telephnoe number and email.

Any questions, message me or email Kim.

I want to apologize for the slight error in my previous post. I was trying to send it from my smart phone and I made a slight error. The post included the statement that an additional $100 for health certificate, shipping crate, and miscellaneous costs to get to the airport.

That statement should read: please include an additional $150 for health certificate, shipping crate, and miscellaneous costs to get to the airport.

Again I do apologize if this created any problems for anyone.

We picked up Xochitl at 7 weeks from SDK after flying into Portland and then drove 3.5 days back to Austin and had a great time bonding with our pup.

And while it was an experience of a lifetime, I think the next pup will be shipped. 38 hours is harrowing. :o

We shipped Waki and it was a very long flight for his little bladder. He turned out fine. Cake flew in the first class cabin. If you can cash in your frequent fliers, now is the time. She did cry in the airport and in the rental car and the hotel but was fine on the flight where she was not observed to be on Scott's lap during the flight because first class. She was fine as long as she was being held, which included finding a sub optimal place in the car to ride. Having a second person in the car to supervise the pup would be a plus. Also recently flew United and South West this year. SW are much nicer and let people be people. United not so much.

To those of you who are (rightfully) concerned about the surfaced you relieve your unvaccinated puppies on; instead of worrying but still rolling the dice consider the option of laying down some sort of barrier-newspaper, cardboard, towels ect. I like to travel with a 3ft. Exercise pen I can set up around an area that I've laid down a barrier. Just an idea.
