Introducing Koda

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I want to introduce you all to Koda! I have not posted a big post like this yet as things have been busy however I wanted to make sure to take the time and share my experience with you all as I always love reading about everyone’s pups.

Koda is one of three in a litter from Wind Walker (Wendy) and Tonto in the spring of 2017. She is almost 11 months old now (man the time has flown by). My Fiancé and I picked her up in July of 2017. We had a wonderful time seeing all the dogs and chatting with Greg. I so wanted to just stay and play with them all day.

Our journey started with the drive back to Portland where we enjoyed walks around the City and her first night in the hotel. The next day we drove to Seattle and enjoyed another day afternoon and another overnight stay. The third day we drove to Vancouver and got on a plane and headed home to Edmonton Alberta Canada. We were worried as the hotels we stayed in said that if the dog is barking and keeps people awake we would have to pay for their room. Luckily Koda slept through the night with us with no whining at all!. The flight was only 2 hours and she slept the entire time so for our travel experience she was an angel.

We got home and started training her and getting her into a routine. I have to say that she is the best dog I have ever owned and I am so thankful for Greg and Kim and everything they do. Koda is so smart and likes to study areas and figure things out. She catches on to the training very fast and keeps us on our toes. She is very submissive and rolls upside down every time she meets another dog then once the dog is done their sniff they play. She is fearless and will play with any dog and if another dog gets too aggressive she stands up for herself and tells them off then goes and plays with another dog. It’s great to not have to worry about her and see her always be so happy. We currently have her in agility classes and she is a superstar. When she is in working mode she really is even more amazing. She is absolutely wonderful and I couldn’t be happier that I choose this bread and am sure I will be adding to our family with another one someday.

A bit back to the puppy stages, Koda only had about 5 accidents in the house total and was potty trained very early. We taught her to bark at the door when she wanted out and since then she has never been a worry. We also had started crate training and although the first few nights she whined for about 30 mins or so in the crate she would sleep through the night. About midnight to 6am mostly. I was impressed as I would get up at 3am just to check and yup she was fast asleep. She has never chewed or gone after anything of ours (furniture, shoes, clothing etc.) and always went for one of her toys instead. This has helped us avoid many headaches. She really has been the best dog I have ever owned and is just so intelligent to figure things out. This has a double edge sword as when she is in the backyard she is always looking for a way out and has started jumping 5 foot fences ha-ha. So we have been dealing with that right now. All in all she is a wonderful addition.

The last part of this is the reaction by people when they meet her. When we are on walks or at the park most people come up and ask what mix she is and are surprised when I say she is her own breed. I proudly tell them about song dog kennels and all about the amazingness of the breed and some have even gone to look them up and maybe one day will get one of their own. She is absolutely gorgeous and the perfect size (31 pounds). I even had someone pull over behind me while driving just to ask about what breed she was and how beautiful she is. I love sharing the history of the dogs and telling people all about Kim and that they should look into getting one of their own. Hopefully someday someone does so we can have them play together as I seem to be the only one in Edmonton with an AIDog.

That is all from me. I will try to get on and post more so that these aren’t so long. I have also attached a bunch of photos for your viewing pleasure. Wishing you all a happy Easter and again a huge thanks to Kim for all his amazing work bringing this breed into people’s lives. I hope one day to make one of the summer gatherings and meet everyone and see all the dogs play.

Love to All

Eric

Kona sounds so similar to her sister Frankie! She's been an angel in some areas - crate training, sleeping through the night, had about 2 accidents before potty training. She also tends to be submissive and loves to play with any dog who can match her energy - it's great to see her problem solve what play style will work for any given dog. She puts on her own agility show when she has another dog chasing her; dodging and weaving, running around and over whatever barriers are available - amazingly fast. Lately, she's had a streak of rebellion; runs away when she first sees the leash, occasionally refusing to get in her crate at bedtime. I'm doing my best to stay patient and consistent, and she seems to be working out of it. She has longer hair - I'd post a picture, but I'm still baffled by the process. I'll text one to Greg and maybe he'll post it for me. It would be great to see them together some day! Berta Monmouth, OR

She weighs about 32 pounds - there's a very thick undercoat! Kona and Frankie looked just alike in build at 4 1/2 months before Frankie's coat started to get long.
