Hi everyone, sorry I havent been active with the group. Im checking in because my girl, Mishe Mokwa, had a seizure tonight. This is the third one since Thanksgiving. Mishe is 3 years old. Her parents are Cree and Jay Silver Heels. She came from the fall 2016 liter. I brought her home December of 2016. I was wondering if any other siblings are having seizures? Also, any advise on preventing seizures? We stopped heart worm, flea tick meds. She eats Blue kibble grain free and homemade food like eggs, turkey, cooked veggies, yogurt, cream occasionally blueberries.. thanks for any help

Jay silver heels is (was, he passed away last year I think) also my pup's father. My pup and his litter mate both have overbites and were larger pups. Mine has never shown any health issues other than the overbite. He was born Dec 2016.

Sounds like my girl and your pup are siblings just not sure if they came from the same liter. So happy to hear your pup is healthy and seizure free. Thanks for responding.

Maybe Mishe is getting into something either in the house or outside. There are certain molds that will cause seizures in dogs. We learned the hard way that walnuts are a culprit. There's a mold that grows on walnuts that will cause seizures in dogs. Any walnut trees in the neighborhood?

Hello...Tenshi is my 8yr old. A few years ago he had a seizure. Took him to the vet - nothing wrong. I mentioned this to a neighbor who had a retriever that had seizures much of her life. She said the vet couldn't find what it was. She found through observation that if the dog had something with nitrates in it - like hot dogs,

she would have a seizure. When I heard this I realized the night before Tenshi had his seizure a gas station person had given him a hot dog (after asking me). Tenshi has never had a seizure since. Only organic nitrate free hot dogs. Try looking for nitrates in some food she's eaten. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the input. I will continue to watch what Mishe eats and is around. May I keep her safe and seizure free.

Hey Lady,

Great to hear from you. Sorry your lovely Mishe is having some problems. A few years ago cousin Wakinyan had a weird incident - not a seizure but limb trembling. It happened several times. I was worried it was neurological. Vet said electrolytes can be off. I don't remember now what she told us to give him but he never had another issue and that was years ago. Afterwards we started giving him sea weed regularly. Ask your vet about electrolytes. Good luck and keep us posted.

My 3 year old dog Jesse just had a grand mal seizure on June 1st at 4:30 am, it was awful. He has different parents than your Mishe. When he was under one year old he had head tremors for several days, then they stopped. I am praying he never has another seizure. Heartbreaking!

We have walnut trees all over our property. Noquisi and Kilchii have not had any seizures. I would also check the yard for weird mushrooms and toadstools. We have small red ones that worry me to death. Has the vet found anything? I hope all is okay now.

At age 10, Tolinka started his journey with seizures. (He is now 13) Talked to my vet, told Kim, and checked out "Dr. Google." Turns out it can be close to impossible to discover exactly why these events happen. Like looking for a needle in a hay stack. We do know the seizures usually happen early in the morning hours. Tolinka has grand Mal seizures. His jaw stretches wide open, sometimes he foams, his body curled forward, his head bends way downward, his body will do 360 flip over, or just fall over on his side. His legs act like he's running in the forest, he sometimes looses control of his bladder. Then tries to get up with no balance, or just lies there for a bit, then tries to get up. He is definitely confused as to what has happened and where he is for a bit. All in all it's all over in less than 5 minutes, but he is still unsure where he is. Wants to go outside so Let him. He comes back in within 5 minutes, and doesn't want to leave my side. I feed him breakfast, he eats, drinks water and is back to normal like nothing has happened. Runs around and plays with my other two AIDogs the rest of the day. Interesting that I know when the seizure is going to happen with 12 hours because Two Step is very attentive to Tolinks, smelling his mouth and genitals area. Sure enough the next morning, here we go again. It's a helpless feeling at the time of the event...All I can do is stand by until it's over Then clean things up. It started out where his seizures happened twice a month. He is on medication, and has been from the beginning. His seizures are now once every two to three months. He is on Levetiracetam Kepra 750 MG twice a day. Also Phenobarbital 30 MG twice a day. I tried CBD, but it was difficult to know how much to give and if the CBD's really did any good because of the other meds he was on. I was reluctant to take him off the original meds for fear the seizures would become worse and more often. There is no sign or report of his siblings, parents, grandparents etc having seizures.

Susie, I hope your pups seizures are petite if at all. Perhaps it was a one time deal. Let's hope that is the case. If you hear of anything, please let me know. I wish your pup good health.

Miz molly, your description of Tolinkas seizures described my Jesse's seizure exactly. Jesse lost bladder and bowel control, he was insecure and restless for several hours, then finally settled down and slept. Do you think they're unaware during the seizure episode?

Interesting question of awareness during the seizures. I do believe they know that "something happened" after the seizures. The first time Tolinka had one, he looked at me like "what the hell just happened to me," and stayed very close to me for about an hour. By now he has had so many that he has almost resigned to the fact that this "strange thing" just happens about once a month. Are they aware during the seizure? I believe they become very focused on what's happening to their body, and "go inside of them selves" so to speak. Like mom pups do when birthing. I try to be supportive and gently stroke him and whisper to him telling him he will be ok. He definitely knows I am there for him. I do believe they feel your energy so stay calm and just let the seizure run its course. Staying calm, does calm them a bit especially when they are coming out of the seizure. And yes, in the big picture, it does age them, certain behaviors do change. Before the seizures he was definitely the alpha pup. Now he is not. Two step has taken that position in some respects. It's an interesting "change of the guard."

Well, Christmas Eve morning we were awakened by the sound of Kaposia having another seizure. That's now 3, widely spaced out in her 5 1/2 years. Always around 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning. Maybe related to something in the sleep cycle or circadian rhythm? Course of the seizure followed exactly miz molly's September 12 description of Tolinka's seizures. The first time this happened we went rushing in to the 24 hour emergency vet for extensive testing, x-rays, etc. and nothing abnormal was found. It is the scariest thing to watch. She always vomits a tiny amount and foams a bit. We thought we had the answer avoiding exposure to walnuts, and certainly never anything with nitrosamines, but apparently that's not the cause or only cause. ☹️ Since the incident, she's been fine again.

Hey folks, I want to pass along some information from another owner with a younger pup who was having seizure issues.  After working with thier vet, they determined that the dog food (Royal Canin) they were feeding their pup contained rosemary extract.  It appears as if the rosemary extract was the trigger to the seizures.  This owner said that her pup has so far been seizure free since changing the puppy diet.

Oh wow! Thank you so much Greg! We'll be checking the ingredient lists on food and treats. One more thing to eliminate and see if it helps. Rosemary extract is showing up in so many food products. Not only is it for flavor, but I understand it also has natural preservative qualities. I myself am extremely allergic to rosemary.
