Trying To Pick Out Names

Recommended Posts

Well I thought I had names picked out. That is until I asked the AID facebook page if they had links to any translation sites for native indian names. Since then I have put two more names on the female list. Oh what did I get myself into. I remember going through this with my daughters.

I would like to see about maybe a few more choices for a male though. I might just have to work on that. The first two names that I had picked out were of Irish and Hebrew. One of the new names I really like and I like my original pick still. I might have to just flip a coin. Although the third female name would fit well if I get a female first since I eventually want to have both a male and female.

You might also keep those few names in mind, and then wait until you meet your pup.

And, probably what will happen is you pick out names, then meet the pup and have to find a new name because the ones you pick don't fit the personality.. LOL

Hey RoyS, I went through the same process with Tolinka ("big flapping ears of coyote) Two Moon (because of his golden eyes). Went through translations, how the name felt rolling of the tongue......It all felt so right. And it turned out to be right. Then The next pup came along and I didn't have a clue what to name him. I talked to my 6 year old grand daughter and she suggested "Charlie Two Step." Being that I wanted a name in native tongue, I just wasn't sure. On the way home from Kim's with pup in lap, I started rattling off different names that I had come up with to see what the pup would react to. zzzzzzzzzzz When I mentioned "Charlie Two Step" his head bounced off my lap with ears perked and his eyes fixed on me......need I say more? I think sometimes it's the kids that have that special understanding with the puppy and just seem to be able to read their minds and communicate with them (even before they arrive home). Maybe give the kids a chance to pick the name after your pup gets home......just my nickels worth. Good luck. I just know your pup will end up with the right name even if you have doubts in the beginning.

Yes the whole name picking out is a lot more difficult for me too. Although my family knows we are getting one... my son hasn't wanted to jump in on any name picking . The names I pick out he says yeah to all of them but when I tell the hubby he says well what about this or that. I think because he thinks it will be to hard for him to learn the name or have to explain what it means every time he is asked. All I choose is Indian...not so much a name really but a meaning. Then it turns out when I say the name a few times it sounds like it would be a male name...all of them do..which I put down I would prefer a male but either is fine. Just need to look into finding female ones too. Gee-sh my human babies were so much easier to pick out names. :D Did I read somewhere that Kim has to approve of the name one decides on? Or maybe I misunderstood it too?

RoyS..you said you got your wife a camcorder for Christmas (great idea) my husband just told me he got one for me for Christmas and at first I was like "Are you kidding me" do we really need 2 of them (and in the back of my head I was thinking.... him and his damn electronics and does he not realize how many doggy items I could have bought with that money he spent on that) He said this will be yours just for the new baby coming when he/she arrives so that made it all better and... I did test it out to get the feel of it at our grand daughters Christmas Program on Sunday and I believe I have the best electronic device in the house :D At a push of a button I can capture a photo from what was recorded. so I can have great videos and get my Photo Junkie that I am all in one! :D

I like the Lakota to English dictionary, http://http://language.nativeweb.org/translation.htm.

We should have named our Sitka, WABLUSKASA (pronounced wah - blue - shkah - shah), which means "bedbug".

Tonya,

I think that if the name is a repeat or too close to a name in Kim's registry you need to pick a different registry name. Actually I haven't figured out how to register Waki. Anyway you can have a fancy name for the registry but what you call your imp is upto you. So if you like a variation on Coyote it's probably been done and registered but that doesn't mean you can't call your pup Coyote in every day life. Waki is Wakinyan Dorje (Lakota for Thunder being / Tibetan for thunder bolt but also can be translated into flying stone and indestructable, immutable essence of reality as it is) but we call him Parrot most of the time.

Actually Sherab, I agree with you are 100%....oh the nick names for these pups. Sometimes I call Two Step, "SIDEWALL" because he is always at my side at all times unless I leave him home when I go out. Maybe we have a new thread here....NICKNAMES!

Well I am just going to throw it out there...considering if it is a male I get. Still need to look for female names also just in case. Everyone is welcome to state there opinion too It will not bother me if you think it sounds like a ridiculous name..

Iyangki Grahi ... pronounced (e-yon-key) (graw-he) calling him Grahi because I think Iyangki sounds too much like a donkey ....meaning "One Love" in Ioway language.

What do you all think?

  • 3 weeks later...

I agree with Star and Allison. I had 2 pages of names (one for boy names, one for girl names). I thought I had decided on either Nita or Iris, but Willow didn't respond to any. It wasn't until 3 or 4 days later when I was rambling off names from the list to Chris that I said "Willow" and her attention was immediately on me.
