Does Your Aid Leave Tracks?

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

Here in the glorious Nor-t we have many seasons of textures and surfaces in which to make foot prints. We have lovely sand, sandy clay, rich black loam, wet plaster Paris type clay with sand, mud, deep mud, slush, powder snow, packing snow and leaf litter. I enjoy looking at tracks. Some tracks are made by critters and others by dogs and people. Most tracks are fairly predictable as far as how sharp the edges, ridges and compressions will be when fresh and how blurry they become if it warms a bit or if it's windy, if there's a dusting of lake snow or if they just sit over time. Waki leaves deceptive prints, when he leaves prints at all. His big, plump snowshoe feet have plenty of fur between the toes. When walking he rarely leaves a print in summer. Even on sand he leaves only light divots to betray his passing. Even when other dogs have passed the same way and left distinct prints. When he does leave a print it seems much older than fresh. My prints and his prints often look separated by hours or even days in time. Even in snow his prints look hazy as if brushed. He's also quiet. I've been remembering how to walk quietly with him. Even at the height of fall in deep leaf litter he hardly makes a rustle. Hardly disturbs the leaves. Have you noticed? Does your dog make prints? Or are these dogs a whisper?

we have a phrase for that

"Hawk's Shadow"

describes how they move and how they leave little sign -when they want to.

Danza is a little bit of a maniac. Most of our outdoor time right now is spent playing a game of fetch or walking down to the creek, and she is so thrilled to be out and about no matter how long we spend out there. She is too engaged with whatever she is doing to be really aware of what her feet are doing, plus she has very dainty little paws. So yes, she leaves prints.
