Introducing Nakoma

Recommended Posts

The GSD is my fathers so he is not around her 24/7 But he has become very close with her and has lunch with her every day. I have a family business and Nakoma comes to work with me every day. My dad takes Nakoma home with him for lunch to play with Lucy the GSD. Nakoma has brought new life into Lucy who is 13 and slow getting around, but plays like a young girl again thanks to Nakoma. His energy leave is at the highest when he is playing with her, he's a mad name running at top speed bouncing from couch to flying through the air. I feel he is more of a calm temperament dog but hard to say through all the puppy energy. He is a lover and even wile playing he wants to sit on your lap, chews his bones on your lap wile expecting you to hold the bone for him. He loves attention and affection from everyone, loves playing with other dogs and his two cats who have exerted him as one of there own. This is huge because these cats will not allow any other animal in our house even chasing off Lucy a 120lb GSD. Nakomas energy seems to come in spurts, playful then sleep, play time then resting in his chair at work looking out the window. He is amazing at work, very well behaved hardly a bark unless everyone leaves the room. He is never too tired to greet our customers even if he just says hi then right back to bed. He has been great around everyone he has met from strangers at work, young kids, babies to old dogs, young puppies and cats.

I hope I'm not making this two long and hope I'm answering everyones questions. Nakoma dose have quite a unique personality, witch in the pics of your pups it must run in the family. Altho they all look so different I can see such a resemblance.

I have lots of plans for Nakoma and myself. I joined a local K9 Search and Rescue team and plan on training Nakoma as ether an Airscenting dog or Cadaver work. I also plan on certifying him as a therapy dog.

Awesome narrative Keith!

I agree - even though the pups look different, there are so many 'family' expressions I see in the photos posted of the littermates! It's a look, cock of the head or even the relaxed legs when sitting!

I'm glad Lucy and Nakoma get to do lunch! and that the cats accepted him. Tayamni has loved my cats since night 1, but the cats are wary of her paws. Then there's Bubba who chased and cornered Tayamni just for the fun of it every now and then. She loves attention (people, dogs, cats - especially loves children, although hasn't met a baby yet). My cats are finally warming up to her a bit - it didn't help that she thought stamping a paw on them was friendly - but their fault because she learned that from them. Bubba is better with her since she started sharing her food with him - (I have to watch that because Bubba is on a special diet due to crystals).

Tayamni never cared about scents (except for food) until a month ago when she realized there are different scents on the ground. I could see her as a search and rescue dog but I don't have the time or expertise for that, I also thought about her as a hunting dog - but I don't hunt anymore - so I am working toward certified therapy dog.

Tayamni loves to do things. I wish I could bring her to work. She wants to go with me. It's not separation anxiety - it's more that she wants to do something, not just sit in the house and play with my sister's dog. She likes that but I know she wants to DO something.

It must run in the family! Boone may become a certified therapy dog too!

I'm glad to hear about Nakoma's personality and his love of attention and affection and greetings! I feel familiar with that personality trait.

What a great litter Azteca x Jay Silver heels had!!!!

Thanks Keith! I love that he gets to go to work with you. I bet the customers love him too. It seems these siblings have a love of every person & animal in common. Boone also loves everyone he comes across and thinks they should all be his best friend. If we are walking and he sees a child in the distance he goes a little bonkers. He absolutely loves all children and wants to be with them above and beyond all else. He feels the same about other dogs & cats. This has created a few issues as not every person or animal wants to be HIS friend! He doesn't understand this at all. I'm working with a wonderful lady who is helping Boone to learn how to approach people & animals with a little less exuberance! This will be a critical lesson if he is to become certified as a therapy dog!

Boone loves to follow a scent & has an amazing nose. Our local dog training facility trains dogs to do scent work but they use rats as a beginning tool. I have a rodent phobia that I can't overcome so we aren't able to participate in that. We play a little game where I hide a treat under heavy metal caps and mix them up. He can always choose the right one without even smelling the other caps. I've been reading online about other types of obstacle scent courses I can set up at home. He is easily bored so I'm always searching for new ideas to engage him.

Please continue to give us periodic updates. We love hearing about all the AIDs but especially Boone's siblings!

Thanks for eveyones replays, it is great hearing about his litter mates! I have also been working very hard with his overly excited and love for other people and animals. He has improved a lot, even tuck him out to eat for for the first time this week to a local place with outside seating. I couldn't have been more proud of Nakoma and how well her behaved! he was put tot he test with another dog on one side of us and a table full of young kids being kids on the other side. Within 5 mins he relaxed and laid by my side the hole time. These dogs amaze me every day!

Are these ponies of Assateague and Chincoteague?

How is the Search and Rescue training going?

Boy, Tayamni will be jealous if I show her a picture of her brother laying down next to a cat!

She's still trying to befriend the 3 that live with us ..... poor thing, I would have thought she'd give up by now! Not her!

That was in the outer banks on NC.

He is doing great! Natural tracker, really picking it up fast! its a game to him and loves the hunt and finding people!

I have another cat that is the same way with him, Nakoma tries so hard to play with him but he just runs away.

Fun little video I made of Nakoma, this was at a disaster training center and Nakoma's first time ever on an agility course. I am pretty sure he thinks he is a cat, loves to climb everything he can.

Video didn't appear on my page ... did I miss it?

Would love to see!

Good Boy! Hope you post more of your adventures. The local search and rescue often have people go hide in the state park at the end of the road by us. Tough but good stuff!

Some more photos of Nakomas adventures. Snow, camping and yes he sat on my lap wile tubbing down a river. Nakoma's "safe spot" or favorite spot is on my shoulders, in that photo my cat managed to lay up there with him.

Hey Nakoma!

Eets your sister here ..... that's my South Florida / Miami accent I'm tryin' out.

I would like to try that raftin and campin out.

Can't wait until the days get longer and I can get more exercise. I sleep when I'm not playing.

Then the meen cat tied to cuddle ... I wish it was the little cute cat instead.

We had a cold time here and I made a poncho for myself.

I go to the beach but I have to be on the leash because I LIKE TO RUN! (and I don't stay close to Mom)

I'm an independent girl ya know - OK so my idea of close and hers are much different, I'm an adventurer too!

Tayamni

That is too funny, it sounded like you where describing Nakoma.

I also have two cats, the one bullies Nakoma but always want to lay with him. Nakoms jumps up and finds a new spot or tries to lay with the other cat but that one is scared of Nakoma and always runs. It is a never ending game.

He is also very independent and have been having a hard time keeping him close.

Love seeing his brothers and sisters, Nakoma is like no other dog but seems to be identical to all his AI Dog relatives.

Awesome shots of your Nakoma, Keith! If my Nakoma was to take a bath in bleach, he'd look like your Nakoma! Haha!

I love the picture of him on "bridge" in the water. Very cool! His S&R trainers must love him!!!!

His training is going great, with a mind of his own it offers some challenges but also makes him work on his own better. All the other dogs we work with are German Shepherds from strong working lines with a high toy drive that makes it very easy to train. Nakoma on the other hand could care less about a toy or even food, so it is night and day between the two types of dogs. Nakoma truly loves the hunt and working a track with lots of praise at the end from his victim so this is his reword.

Right now we are up to mile long tracks that have been aged at lease 4 hours from the time the track was laid. This includes cross tracks from other people and dogs along with other distractions wile running the trail, road and water crossings in mostly wilderness areas and some urban. This meets the standards for most certifications we just have to get him a little more consistent before testing him.

That is FANTASTIC news! I love how he prefers praise as a reward instead of food or toy. It looks like you guys are just about "there" before he can start working. I can wait to read about your adventures with him once Nakoma gets certified. I'm so happy for you both!!!! :D

Wow that's great. It's probably a little less intimidating to be found by a Nakoma vs a working line GSD. My 13 year old GSD is in a wheel chair now and for the first time in his life people aren't afraid of him, mostly. Can't wait to hear Nakoma has passed his certification. What a wonderful job for him.

Sherab, I'm sure that anyone would be happy to see Nakoma! Especially when these dogs get all wiggly when they are happy!

I was a greeter with Tayamni at Barnes & Noble before Christmas for Share-A-Pet (the therapy Pet foundation) and actually had a father tell his kids to stay away from the dangerous dog.

A dangerous dog with a Therapy working vest on! Well she did look a little more like a coyote when she was a bit younger before she started filling out ....

I apologized to my dog for his ignorance .
