Karen 41
I've been doing some reading on Salmon poisoning.http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/clientEd/salmon.aspx Lola had all the symptoms except for vomiting. the article also said that 90% of dog die after 14 days of eating the fish if not treated. that would be tomorrow. She's being treated, too.
Allison 2,369
Keep on it. These dogs are more able to kick off sicknesses that would kill other breeds, but they need our help. We are thinking of you, and sending our good vibes. Perhaps it is more like the flu shots that are so popular now. Perhaps she is showing symptoms of what she has been immunized against. The next few days will tell. We are with you.

Allison 2,369
Jerry, what made you take her in?
Jerry 7
Jerry, what made you take her in? Well, we knew she had gotten into some salmon skin the Friday before last, so we were on the lookout for symptoms. When we saw the bloody diarrhea a couple of days age, we were worried, but the vet wasn't so we held off. but this morning, instead of bounding out of her crate at 6:30 to go to the bathroom, I had to lift her out, and she felt hot to the touch. she was super lethargic, and she didn't eat most of her breakfast. Clearly a sick puppy. It was kind of like your experience when you said "she's puking blood, can I take her in now". the vet was booked for the day, but they recommended another one. Jerry -- I'd be looking for another vet. Allison, remember we had an owner a few years ago that had a problem with a pup and the vet kept saying it's nothing - wait it out and the pup was deathly ill. But, that's just my opinion! Our vet is spectacular. She even met my husband a few years ago on a Sunday because Willie had serious issues. Judy K

Jerry 7
Hi - Linnea here, Jerry's wife, here to tell you that Lola is much better!! She spent the day at the vet yesterday with an IV with fluids and antibiotics, and the medication to kill off the fluke that causes salmon poisoning. She received lots of love from the women in the office who thought she was adorable. She's so strong, it's hard for the vets to tell that she's sick, I think. These dogs are so tough...there was another dog in there who had the same illness and she has been there for two days with the IV in her. This morning Lola is playing, has no fever, and her swollen glands in her neck have gone down. Thanks to all of you for your prayers and good energy! (I hope I'm posting this correctly...I don't know what I'm doing! Linnea

Karen 41
I'm so relieved, and so happy for you. I was worried all night. If she comes home all sassy and bratty, rename her "Rizzo" and embrace it.
Lowe Family 0
We are all happy to hear she is doing better, especially her brother Tabor!
Jerry 7
We're going out to buy her first pack of cigs, to celebrate! The tests also revealed that she has roundworm AND giardia. Hopefully none of the other puppies have those nasties too. She's quite perky considering all of her ailments!

Hopefully none of the other puppies have those nasties too. She's quite perky considering all of her ailments! Thank goodness, so glad she's feeling better, yay!!! Miko has roundworms too and was just treated w/ more strongid. Kim says to keep treating them every two weeks till 12 weeks, while my vet is suggesting starting him in 2 weeks on Interceptor (heartworm) pill that goes after roundworms too. Getting conflicting medical suggestions is frustrating. . Congrats on Lola's recovery=)
Allison 2,369
Remember that Kim says to treat with the gentle wormer for X number of weeks, then check for worms, and treat with the stronger wormer, as needed. So not really conflicting, I don't think. By the way, Kim asked me to tell you, if it hasn't already come up, that Lola will now be immune to Salmon Fever. So that is a positive side effect. Allison 2,369
So, my pup is 10 weeks old, two more weeks and check for worms and treat accordingly.
Karen 41
This makes me wonder if I can find out about building up Danza's immunity to Salmon. It is a real concern where I live, right on a salmon-spawning creek. Would Kim know anything about it? My vet might, but if there is an old way to do it, she might not. I'd rather do it in a controlled way than have a crisis, and I think it would be better to do it than not - the risk is very high for us. Sorry if this is a little bit of thread hijacking, but I didn't know where else to put this.
Allison 2,369
I'll ask him. I think it's a good place to ask this question.
maria 182
Jerry....been thinking soo much of Lola!!! Hope all continues to improve....it's so hard when they aren't feeling well...at least you know what it was! Take care!

So not really conflicting, I don't think. By the way, Kim asked me to tell you, if it hasn't already come up, that Lola will now be immune to Salmon Fever. So that is a positive side effect. Allison, my vet is suggesting that I make an appointment 3-4 weeks from when he was given strongid last. She's saying after the strongid treatment he just had, then to "treat" him with a heartworm pill that happens to get rid of roundworms too. (Interceptor). I guess that would be the alternative to giving a stronger wormer at 12 weeks if he's still positive for roundworms? Ya, she's saying to use this heartworm in place of a wormer 2 weeks later. Hmm. What does anyone think about that?
Allison 2,369
So it's a blanket wormer, a stronger purgative of some type? I don't think that is unreasonable, and you have to have faith in your vet. Kim is only worried about the early weeks, when they are not strong enough to handle the harsh wormers. This is standard procedure for all pups---a gentle wormer for the first few weeks, and then whatever is necessary. It is those early weeks, when they are still so tender, when the treatment may be worse than the problem, that Kim is warning us about. After that, you should follow your vet's advice. If you are still worried, please do email or call Kim and ask him. I am sure he will be glad to talk to you about it.

Hope all continues to improve....it's so hard when they aren't feeling well...at least you know what it was! Take care! Thanks, Lola is doing great; lots of energy and very happy. She is done with the salmon fluke and round worm treatment, has another 1.5 weeks of tetracycline for the salmon poisoning, and is starting medication for the giardia tonight. Lots of meds, but she is handling it well.
