That's hysterical. Is the photographer wearing skates?

I keep getting on here everyday to see "little brother" and humph...nada! Bwahahaha

He is all legs - its kinda crazy. We have a queen size bed and when he stretches out at night, he takes up the entire width from nose to toes! And run...WOW...he flies like he's going to take off! Can't wait till spring when we get the fence up so we can play ring around the house without the lead! The boy has some speed on him!

He took a step outside yesterday morning and "forgot" his wait command - bolted for the lake edge (remember he likes the ice) and imagine his surprise when he met liquid instead of a solid! Our warm up melted the ice on the channel...and remember...he HATES to swim...I laughed so hard -- and he reprimanded me with a yip and a look!

The good thing - he came right back on command...soaking wet and chilly ...but right back! ROFLMAO!

Wow the release word is truly brilliant- I never would have thought of that! How do you train them to do that? Do you use strangers, or just always have a release command for food? Where do you guys get all these great ideas, I'm so afraid I'm going to forget to teach him something really important. But it's never too late to learn, right?

We have trained ours not to accept anything from anyone without our "release" word!! Works well. We had wheaton terriers that the neighbors poisoned with treats. Talk about fools!

P.S. Had another strike out with the Humane Society and the pups next door to us. I just don't understand it. The big hunting hound has NOT been off the chain since NOVEMBER! But I am refusing to give up. I can't imagine what's gonna happen this summer!

That's one of the great things about the forum, all these techniques to try. I've started several new ones with my new pup. Coyo has tightened up his basic obedience, as well, helping to teach the pup.

Debi, I know that look you describe. Coyo does not like to be laughed at, either. They are very self-aware.

Do you expect the water to freeze over again, before Spring? I've started working in the yard, over here, as the bulbs are coming up, and flowers are already opening.

I want to see the bulbs blooming - my crocus are always first to come up and even with our warm up last week - they have yet to peek their heads out. :(

We are probably going to get another freeze or two - we usually have a good one in February and that will last till early March. We are getting the coldest weather of the year this week - already have a fresh coating of snow...I so am thinking West is where we need to go - we are all sick of the snow - except Soul! Bwahahaha

Another video...a little background...

Soul was having a rowdy day as it was just too bitter cold to go for a walk - so Brian grabbed his guitar after playing with him for about an hour or so. There were several "I wanna play the guitar too" moments from Soul - which I edited out due to the hubby in hiding's choice of words! Bwahahaha...

Here is the final result...about 40 seconds worth!

...and here is the result of no long distance walk due to weather (14 below zero with wind chill)! It's a little dark as I used the camera to record so there is no backlight!

Ours do the same thing -- now multiply that times three and through a dining room, two parlors and a sun room -- all in circles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I sounds like a freight train and then I open the door in the sun room and they fly out the door and off the porch and then it continues around the yard and FINALLY they are tired. Right now it is 11 below zero and the wind is howling AND it's snowing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That looks familiar. Judy, I wish I could see that one. I imagine you are laughing the whole time?

It is funny -- funnier yet is trying to distract them and telling them the door is open and out they go! It's funny to see them all airborne - of course my heart races 'cuz one of these days someone is gonna break somethin'!!!

I know what you mean. It has been funny watching little Sitka, try to go through the shower walls. He doesn't quite understand glass, yet.

I'd know that dance even in the dark......the explosion of energy, back legs digging in for speed, ears flattened by the wind, tables rocking, then all of a sudden, things are quiet and he has fallen to the floor for a quick nap. zzzzzzzzzz

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, it has been a few since I posted on the forum as the life of a PhD candidate gets hectic at times. The good news is I am at the ethics review board stage and that is one step away from gathering data for my study.

To celebrate, I took the day off yesterday to get outside in the snow and enjoy my AI pup before he forgets that I am not attached to my laptop by the fingertips!

Just to catch everyone up - Soul is doing great and to the new pup owners who are having issues with discipline - stay strong - at 11 months, Soul is finally "getting it"...or should I say, we are finally "getting it". A stern "drop it" stops him dead in his tracks with the remote hanging out of his mouth and to the floor he goes in submission. A kind "come" has him running to me or Brian with joy in his eyes. The nipping has stopped unless we are playing (and then it is just jowls and no teeth) and he is learning how to behave with new people on our daily walks.

Soul has a new little sister, as my father-in-law has adopted a "furkid" from our local prisoner program. It is a great program where rescued dogs get to go to prison and be trained for 3 months. Punkin joined the family last Friday and well...as you can see below - they match: ears and colors! She loves him and vice versa - but boy can they wear us out quick!

Here they are and here's a link to mine and Soul's frolic in the snow... while the picture video is a little long - I believe it is worth it to see the expressions on his face!

Enjoy and I'll be back in a few days to chat with everyone - it's off to dissertating hell...edits are a pain!

Well - my dog has once again amazed me.

Condensed version: Vet visit yesterday, very crowded. Waited in car for 1/2 hour till big dogs left (why are the waiting areas so small in vet offices?) and went in. Soul greeted little dogs with grace and kindness. In walks old Basset Hound - Soul went over and Old Man didn't like him - put Soul down in submission in 1/2 a second. We all laughed.

1/2 hour later - still waiting. Soul is being good and calm. Door opens and in pops a huge square head and pink nose...it was Scooby - a 9 month old pitbull who looks like his owners feed him steroids. HUGE! Scooby the Pit growls, Doc sternly tells human to remove him - he isn't sociable. Owner swears obedience has helped. Scooby growls again. Soul is noticeably agitated. Of course, I get nervous (oops). Scooby nips humans hand and lunges at Soul...Soul darts at Scooby, grabs his scruff at his neck and rolls this 97 lb pitbull into submission and then lays his head over the pit's neck and just chills. Everyone's jaws dropped...Scooby's human was offended! Bwahahaha

So...Basset Hound equals submission (who by the way was half Soul's size) and Pitbull equals King Poobah! I do believe our little Soul is a bully! and the bigger they are - the more he does so...

Doc says it was my reaction - Soul was protecting me from Scooby while the Old Hound didn't cause a reaction from me...hmmmmm...

Anyhoo - we had to get a stronger flea med as they are irritating his skin and the low level stuff is not working. Soul weighed in at .....drumroll.... 39.5 lbs. Doc was impressed by his growth and leanness - says his legs look like deer appendages! Bwahahaha...loved that his teeth are pearly white (positive proof that natural knuckles work) and all is good health wise...oh by the way - he sang for the office too! They all just love our little Soul!

Off to work now! Take care!

Congratulations Debi. Nice to know Soul is truly your great protector. I bet that feels great. I would hope Tolinka would do the same for me. But.........I'd rather not be in a position to find out.

Jerry, are you at UC Humbolt? An old friend is a prof up there. (Down there, I guess, since I've moved north.)
