Iidoba Member Wins Sponsorship From Canidae

Wow. It was fun to see that last picture, little Sitka with his favorite "Big Air Bella" frisbee.

I am shocked to see how much he has grown. We got through our last bag of dog food, and as promised, tried the Canidae.

The one I had tried before was the Salmon (blue). Coyoté did not like that one, but that is not saying much, because he does not eat dog food. It was already out of date, by the time little Sitka came along, so this time around I got Canidae ALS (All Life Stages) Grain Free, again for Coyo, who needs grain free. It is the golden brown container.

I have to say that I was very surprised, both dogs love it!

I use it mostly for treats, and also when I'm caught without a good raw meal. Perhaps that sounds strange to use kibble as treats, but it works well for us. For the little guy, I have a strange flying saucer looking thing, that you put the kibble inside, and he'll roll it around for a long while, snacking, as one falls out occasionally.

Sitka is the first dog I've had that is food motivated, so I have been using the kibble as a reward for house training, too, and he is johnny on the spot, with a very nice "sit" for his rewards.

Coyoté does his big brother, thing, and helps the pup to get out to the kennel in a timely manner. Before, he did not care about the kibble treat, but now, he insists on his Canidae reward as well.

I had no problems with changing brands, and both dogs continue to ask for their Canidae.

I used to feel awful when I'd miss a raw meal. I called it "Dog Chili", when I fed kibble. It was great for a change, but it was obvious, the next day, that it did not sit well with them.

I feel much better about Canidae. Thanks, Todd, for coaxing me to try it.

Todd,

At what age did you first start training Bella with the frisbees? What was the first steps you took with her? I would love to do some things like that with Chhaya....she has lots of energy and seems like she needs a job to do even at 4 months! The sit, stay, shake, etc. just doesn't seem to be enough for her...it's like she wants more to do. These dogs are very different training.....their little minds are always working! I would appreciate any info you found helpful to you. Thanks!

Hi Maria,

What's important at this age is to introduce the disc to the pup as a interactive toy never a passive toy for the dog to chew on. So, don't leave the disc laying around always be playing with the pup when the disc is out.

Start out by using the disc as a food bowl for a few days. Then before feeding her start to slide the upside down disc across the floor and she will go get it. Do that a couple times then feed her in it. After she is eagerly chasing the sliders then you can move to rolling the disc on edge away from the dog. She should chase and return the disc to you. Don't promote chewing on the disc as much as bringing it back to you.

Move the rolling game outside and keep rolling the disc to her for the first few months it will train the pup to track, get and retrieve. Don't start throwing the disc for the pup until it has a solid chase and retrieve of the rollers first.

While the pup is this young you need to be careful and not jump it. Bella was over a year old before we started doing the bigger jumps and stuff. When she has mastered the rollers let me know and we will move on to the next phase!

Good luck and have fun with it but take it slow. You have a lot of time!!! Where are you? Maybe I could put you in touch with other disc doggers in your area.

Peace!

Todd

Good morning Todd,

I have been following you and the amazing Bella, and somewhere I missed how to purchase one of Bella's disks. Could you let me know? I would love to get one for Tolinka. He is very clever, and needs new entertainment in the game department. The disk sounds perfect. Also, Thanks for the hints on how to get him started playing with the disks. It will be interesting to see what game he develops with it. He definitely enjoys designing his own entertainment. Yesterday I gave him a 20 gallon plastic pot from the garden and threw it for him. He takes a flying leap, jumped on top of this big pot and rode it, sliding across the pavement, :Bwahahaha: and immediately brings it back for more. As I said, he likes to develop his own games and he keeps me in stitches. Thanks Todd. Oh I will keep you posted if he develops something unusual with the disk.......you never know :(

Cheers!

Thanks Todd....we are about 40 minutes north west of Harrisburg...central PA. Chhaya does play ball...she is now just bringing it back to me and dropping it so I can throw it again. At first she wanted to growl and have me chase after her for it...silly dog thought I was gonna do that! Bwahahaha!!! She soon learned that she had come to me and drop it!

I would love to know of disc doggers in my area thanks again for your tips!

  • 1 month later...

We are on our 6th bag of Canidae, no grain formula, for all life stages. That is more dog food, than I have bought in the entire 9 years of Coyo's life. Both dogs love it.

Now that the pup is starting to walk away from his morning meal, the one that is Canidae, we will continue to use it for training and quick meals.

Thanks Todd, and Canidae.

I have now switched All three dogs to Canidae. They have been on it for about two months now. All three of them are different breeds, different ages, and love it. Thanks Todd for turning us on to it.
