  1. And a very late HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you!!! I can't believe they are a year old, time really flies!

Happy day late Birthday to Zephyr. Other than my guy, I don't know who the other siblings are... But... Happy 1st Birthday!!!!! :-D

Their birthdays being on the first day of spring seems fitting to me, don't you think? :-)

  2. Gorgeous Pic!!!! My mom thought it was Nakoma when I showed her! Haha! You take some really amazing shots of your pup! I love how there are so many different shades of brown in their coats!!!!

Thank you so much! I know they look like twins! I really do love their coat too, Zeph continues to get more orange/blonde highlights in his coat as he gets older and I just love the depth and variation of the blonde mixed with his dark chocolate color :)

  3. Sounds like the perfect fit for an AI!!

They are incredible dogs, but I rarely recommend them because I believe there are few people who are able to truly recognize and respect them as deep spirits. My own boyfriend struggles to see what I see many times and he is a very spiritual person...he is just used to interacting with the average dog (labs, pugs,etc.). I think some people have trouble finding peace with the more primitive breeds because these dogs are true free thinkers. This is why love love Zeph and my huskies so much, they have their own wants and desires....it takes mutual respect to develop a relationship with them. The connection becomes so much more meaningful and rooted.

I believe these dogs belong with people who will understand and appreciate their gentle spirits :)

  4. haha sounds familiar! Zeph has always been great about not destroying anything, but i guess the fertilizer was just too tempting! I have never tried sweet potato as a treat, thats such a good idea, mine both love fruit, so i am sure they would love that too :)

LOL! sorry for the mess - but it is funny because I'm thinking of Tayamni & Coffey - they BOTH love the cat poop. It's a delicacy

Then there's the dog park and the fertilizer they spray on the grass and all the dogs start eating dirt because it smells like poop or something.

I got a call from my sister and our two had just dug in a different spot in the backyard.

They dug up some sweet potatoes and were happily munching away!

Haha! that's what I get for feeding them sweet potatoes as treats!!!!!! :o:P

  5. Zeph is doing very well...we had a rough week last week. He has mild separation anxiety that we have been working on, only scratches up the front door, but generally NEVER destroys anything else.

My fault: one night I left treats in my backpack and came home to all my belongings strewn across the floor. Then a few days later, I re-potted our indoor plants...not thinking...Zeph has a bad poop eating habit and the potting soil smelled like poop....well we came home to Zeph having knocked down one of the plants and there was soil all over the carpet, he ate one whole succulent, a lot of soil, part of an orchid, and most of another plant...sigh - took us over a week to get all the soil out and clean the carpet so it doesn't smell or have stains now haha

So my boyfriend brought up the crate idea again, which I had tried when he was younger with no success. Happy to say we have now been crating him when we leave (though we have to crate him together with Remi) and he has been perfect, no crying, no trying to get out, etc!!! I honestly thought it would never be possible to crate him, but I guess he has gotten used to being put in the kennel at my business during downtime...and now with him being older, he can handle it better, YAY!!

Here is a picture of my two crazies :)

  6. So I have realized that I am long over due for an update on Zephyr!

I have been so busy, that I haven't had a chance to get pics of him on my nice camera, so the one's below are on my phone. And can you believe I have been busy enough that I haven't even had time to get him neutered yet, eek! I have him scheduled for January 12th, so the time is fast approaching!

He is doing great though. I have started really upping his training and he is doing very well - walks beautifully on a leash! Now we are working on his off-leash recall and so far so good!! In his younger puppy days, I had a lot of crate issues and I have to admit, I decided that was not a battle worth fighting. He has been left roaming my apartment since he was probably 9 weeks old and has never destroyed anything so it worked out well for us. He does still have a little bit of separation anxiety (will cry at the door for about 10 minutes when I leave...and if I speak to anyone in the hallway of my apartment to where he can hear me, he will scratch my door...so that really is the only damage he has ever done. I find that when he gets out of routine (like if I have to board him at the business or if we stay with my boyfriend) then it flares up again. The upside is that his anxiety is slowly improving and it was never terribly bad to begin with.

He is still a tiny little tike - I haven't weighed him in a while, but I would estimate his weight to be only about 32lbs. He is as tall as my Husky, but he is just all legs and ears haha. I love him all the same though!

I'll get some nicer pictures in the new year, but for now, here are some from my phone :)

ps. sorry, I tried resizing the pics about 3 times to make them better viewable when clicked on...don't have time to try again lol

  7. Kim,

So sorry to hear about your loss. His contributions will not be forgotten.

I wish I lived in Oregon as I would have loved to be able to help you and Greg with all of the puppies if only to relieve some of your stress.

I cannot thank you and your father enough for keeping this wonderful breed alive. Even just this morning, as I was still lying in bed, I was thinking how amazing the bond is between Zephyr and I -- and of course how he really did choose me. He brought laughter and love into my life at a time when I needed it most.

Through these dogs, your father was able to touch all of our lives in a very distinct way.

My heart is with you and your family.

  8. ...and might I add, there was just such a calmness about him while he stood his ground, you could tell he wasn't afraid, but he wasn't going crazy and getting all reactive either - it was like he just went into this Zen state and stood there calmly, let out two barks and that was it...just mind blowing!

  9. And here are some updated pics of Zeph ... man this kid is so photogenic! Anyways my last post was more of a flashback, this is more of an actual update.

He is doing fantastic. Knows when to chill/when to play. I gave up on the crate and actually put it back in storage. I have been leaving him roaming at the apartment and he has been doing awesome -- no chewing anything (even while he is still teething) and only has an accident occasionally if I am gone for 5 hours-ish and only sometimes even then.

His temperament is perfect. Not going to lie, I was super worried in the beginning - he seemed a bit more alpha than I wanted and was so fussy about everything. He has really settled in well though. I use my dogs at my dog daycare / boarding facility to help me asses new dogs, so I require my dogs to be very good at reading energy and body language. Zeph has been doing great around all the dogs and I am slowly training him to listen to my cues when I introduce a new dog to him - he is doing very well.

Also, I am completely stunned and honestly proud of this boy. A few weeks ago, I stopped by my parents house with the dogs and was in the front yard letting them go potty before I went inside. All of the sudden, I look up to see our neighbors huge Pyranese/St. Bernard having escaped from their yard and is full on charging us barking and snarling. Remi (my husky) has been attacked by dogs twice (both times unprovoked...one dog even tried to kill her), so my first reaction was to protect her and I immediately pulled her behind me. Then I thought oh my God, Zeph is only 22lbs, one chomp and he's gone...so as I am trying to pull Zeph behind me to protect him, he will not budge. This little guy, stands his ground and gets in between me and this huge dog. He puffs out his chest and gives two "grown up" barks (they still sound so puppy-like, but as grown up as he can sound right now haha). It was enough to make the dog slam on its breaks only 2 feet from us and hesitate for a second. That's when I dragged Zeph behind me and yelled at the dog to get away. It hesitated and eventually started trotting off, but Zeph got in front of me again and then kept barking at it. I was just in awe. He has never done anything like that before and I had never heard that bark from him - I just couldn't believe my little 22lb guy was ready to take on this 90b. + dog!! Truly amazing! Anyways, I was just glad everything ended okay, and I called to the neighbors who eventually got their dog back home securely.
