  1. Yes, those are good suggestions. I already do the wait and even "gentle" when taking something out of my hand. He seems to not growl if the food is cooked, it's just when it's raw. I think I'm going to start feeding him some raw out of my hand, that I haven't tried. Our dog trainer in PK says to take the bowl away and return it with something yummy so they begin associating you with the source of food. Guess it's the same concept that you are talking about. BUT, is this a big deal? Is it a sign of early aggression that I'm going to have to constantly maintain through his life? I guess I
  2. Hey guys, I haven't been posting lately, but I've been following this post, and doing "raw food" research on my own... I JUST started feeding Miko raw chicken and reduced amount of kibble. Before he was mainly on kibble, raw egg x2 perday, sometimes flax seed and sometimes yogart, then fruits, vegs, and some table scraps. I will have to say that MIko has had dandruff and literally 24 hours after feeding him raw egg, his coat began to shine and the dandruff disapeared. His coat just continues to look better and better! So two days ago, I started giving Miko raw chicken. I have to contain hi
  3. Just wanted to thank everybody for their insight & experience. In the past 5 days, I've seen significant improvement in Miko! I think part of it is b/c he was picking up on my energy, as I was questioning my own abilities and methods of corrections and more. After reading some posts, and talking to Kim, my confidence level went back up, and it reflected immediatley in Miko. What's helped the most is Kim's advice on being harder if they don't seem to get the message. I don't like to do any kind of physical correction at all! But I have followed Monks of newskete and some of Ceasar's tac
  4. Hey everyone, I called Kim about some issues last week that Miko has been having all of a sudden. Right in the begining since Miko's been home, we've been consistent with the "no bite", "no jump", etc. Miko was as mouthy as I would expect any normal puppy to be. He seemed to challenge me more than my husband, and I began to think I was being too hard on him, so I let up a little.... I tried to ask my vet about methods to interviening with the biting, and she basically told me that by giving physical correction (pushing on tounge, hand over muzzle, lip against tooth), I was encouraging him t
  5. Allison, my vet is suggesting that I make an appointment 3-4 weeks from when he was given strongid last. She's saying after the strongid treatment he just had, then to "treat" him with a heartworm pill that happens to get rid of roundworms too. (Interceptor). I guess that would be the alternative to giving a stronger wormer at 12 weeks if he's still positive for roundworms? Ya, she's saying to use this heartworm in place of a wormer 2 weeks later. Hmm. What does anyone think about that?
  6. Thanks everyone for your suggestions, so thankful to have this forum!!
  7. Thank goodness, so glad she's feeling better, yay!!! Miko has roundworms too and was just treated w/ more strongid. Kim says to keep treating them every two weeks till 12 weeks, while my vet is suggesting starting him in 2 weeks on Interceptor (heartworm) pill that goes after roundworms too. Getting conflicting medical suggestions is frustrating. . Congrats on Lola's recovery=)
  8. Hey everyone, thanks for all the great responses! I am on the go this morning, but I wanted to update you guys... I took Miko to the vets yesterday b/c I just felt like something was wrong. The outcome was that he DOES have a bladder infection. He also has round worms. She gave him a wormer for that and an Pennicilin for the bladder infection. Anyways, I'll update soon, but just wanted to pass along the worming info in case anyone hasn't had their pup checked. Oh ya, and she tried to get me to give him flea stuff. I said no, figured I'd wait to hear from you guys. Poor guy:(
  9. OH ya, he eats Innova puppy food, and some veggies and meat in small portions.
  10. My concern is that I just discovered Miko has been peeing in his crate on his matt thing. I've been sick with no sense of smell, but my husband noticed that it smelled like pee, and I turned the mattress over and it was all stained yellow on one side. We estimate he's been doing it only a few days, if that. He has just started sleeping through the night, well like 4 straight hours. He's pretty good about going outside every 25 minutes or so, except at naps during the day. Does that sound like a bladder infection or a behavioral thing? Also, he's got dandruff all of a sudden, I haven'
  11. Hey everyone, great to see others posting updates on their pups! There's such a vast array of beauty amongst these pups, I'm blown away by how different but equally stunning these dogs are! Miko is doing well, he's definitely getting more energetic and rambunctious. He's very bitey, I notice, he's less able to keep it under control when he's super excited, or just woke up. He's also still jumpy, especially when you are sitting down, but he never jumps directly on me, although he does my husband. It's been SO COLD here in VT since he came home, that we haven't had an opportunity to spend a

LINDA, I think they might also be on TV! I heard that recently, but I don't know which channel. My first guesses would be either animal channel or discovery channel. Have you ever watched Ceasar Milan on TV? He's great too. I think he's discovery channel.
  13. Wow the release word is truly brilliant- I never would have thought of that! How do you train them to do that? Do you use strangers, or just always have a release command for food? Where do you guys get all these great ideas, I'm so afraid I'm going to forget to teach him something really important. But it's never too late to learn, right?
  14. Maria, congratulations, she's so cute!! That's funny, Miko loves to eat, and will come over to the shelf where the food is and sit...and wait... and stare up at his food, then stare at me. He acts like he is always STARVING!! But the funny part is from day one, I couldn't believe how much this puppy pooped!! Like, where does he carry it all?? Well, at least he's food motivated :Bwahahaha: Nice to see the pics!
